United NationsSDGs/Sustainable Development Goals- Agenda inable-development-goals/2018-03-12

UN SDGs – Agenda 2030 September 15th 2015, The United Nations (UN) decided on a new set of (179sustainable development goals (Agenda 2030).For the first time the UIN included road traffic safety as a significantsustainability aspect. The goals specifically mentions road safety as the sixthelement in target three, “Good health and well-being”. “Reduce Road Injuriesand Deaths. By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries fromroad traffic accidents” The UN sees by this indication the significance of roadtraffic crashes as a major global health issue.2018-03-12

UN SDGs – Agenda 2030 The UN’s focus on safety lies well in line with the earlier prediction of the WHO, thatroad traffic crashes can become the seventh leading cause of death by 2030. Todayroad traffic injuries are currently the ninth leading cause of death across all age groups. In the age group 15-29 years road traffic fatalities is the main cause of death today. Theunsafe transport system is hence striking hard at many road users who are enteringtheir most productive years. In Agenda 2030 the limited safety in the road transport system is further specificallymentioned in target eleven “Sustainable cities and communities”. Element two“Affordable and Sustainable Transport Systems” is pointing at the importance of safetyin the transport system.2018-03-12

UN SDGs – Agenda 2030 In line with the UN’s Agenda 2030, road traffic safety is today an importantelement of road traffic safety, and traffic safety shall be integrated in all areaswhere sustainability practices are called for.In Agenda 2030 the UN is also calling for “Responsible consumption andproduction”, goal twelve. In this goal companies are urged to adoptsustainable practices and sustainable public procurement is clearly indicatedas an important element. Both private and public organizations are essentialfor improving road traffic safety.12.6 Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, toadopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information intotheir reporting cycle12.7 Promote public procurement practices that are sustainable, inaccordance with national policies and priorities2018-03-12

ISO 39001- part of UN Road Safety CollaborationUNRSC (coordinated by WHO) has five pillars:1. Road safety management (ISO 39001)2. Safer roads and mobility3. Safer vehicles4. Safer road users5. Post-crash 2

What is ISO 39001?a global standard that sets minimum requirements for a roadtraffic safety (RTS) management system, to help preventand reduce the risk of road-related death and serious injurya standard which is aligned with the best practice SafeSystem goal and approach to road safetyan adaptable high level framework, designed to be tailoredto each organization’s specific needsa management system standard that shares a structure andcore text with other key international management systemstandards, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 450012018-03-122

Why should I use ISO 39001?to improve your organization’s RTS performanceto establish a RTS management system that can beintegrated with other disciplines within your organization’smanagement system (e.g. Quality, Environment, OHSAS)to proactively manage RTS risks, save lives, reduce lostproductivity and demonstrate your commitment to bothsafety and social responsibility2018-03-123

Key elements of the managementsystem standard- emphasis on the context of the organization- risk-based thinking throughout towards achievingambitious road safety results through the Safe Systemgoal and approach- integration of the RTS management into overall businessstrategy- requires top management involvement and accountability- increases efficient management- emphasis on communication with an understandingof interested parties2018-03-125

ISO 39001:2012 – Road traffic safetymanagement system standardStarter’s GuideWhy adopt ISO 39001? Preventing death and serious injury in road traffic crashes isa global priority Addressing a primary occupational safety risk Successful road injury prevention requires management A systematic, results-focused approach is needed Adopting ISO 39001 will bring various benefits(safety, economic, environmental)2018-03-12

RTS Performance Factors The heart of RTS MS Identify and prioritize Risk exposure factor (distance, volume, product/services provided) Final safety outcome factors(i.e. number of KSI) Intermediate safety performancefactor (safe planning, road design,PSE, fitness, journey management,post-crash response) KSI: Killed and Seriously Injured PSE: Personal Safety Equipment2018-03-12
