The History of OakeyThe English inventor John Oakeywas born in 1814. Apprenticed to apiano manufacturer, one of his taskswas to prepare sanded paper to rubdown the wood and coatings. Takingpages from old ledgers, he wouldcoat them in glue, subsequentlysifting sand or powdered glass overthem. After acquiring a detailed understanding of the processesthat made these compounds bond firmly, he foundedJohn Oakey & Sons Limited in 1833, with the aim ofmechanising the production of abrasives.Originally, the process of making glass paper and emerycloth was carried out by hand, requiring a five-yearapprenticeship. Over time Oakey mechanised this process, using machines that he invented and patented. Oakeyalso produced black lead for the household market andintroduced Wellington Knife Polish in 1858 andadvertisements for Oakey’s Wellington Knife Polish werestill a common feature on buses and trams, well into thetwentieth century. Why Oakey Is Still Great TodaySince then, generations of tradespeople have madeOakey their first choice for abrasive papers - a traditionthat is still going strong to this day.4OAKEY - MADE FOR PROFESSIONALS SINCE 1833

What Does Grit Mean? The grit number indicates the abrasive grade on theabrasive side of the product. A higher grit numberindicates a smaller abrasive grain and a finer abrasiveproduct. For heavy sanding and stripping, you need coarsesandpaper measuring 40 to 60 grit. For smoothing surfaces and removing smallimperfections, choose 80 to 180 grit sandpaper. For finishing surfaces smoothly, use very fine and extrafine sandpaper, such as 240 to 400 grit. The grit numbers on Oakey packaging are shownbeneath the description of the grit, i.e.; fine, medium, coarse, etc. If you compare the feel of coarse gritsandpaper and fine grit sandpaper, you will feel howmuch the grain changes - this is why it is so importantto choose the right sandpaper for your project, to helpyou achieve the finish you want, as easily as possible.Choosing the Correct Grit for Your ProjectEXTRA COARSEPolishingCreating a smooth surfaceprior to paintingRemoving light surfaceimperfections or deburring edgesFOR METALStripping rustand surface coatingsCreating a smooth andeven finishFORFILLERRemoving rough texturesCreating a smooth and even finishCreating a satin smooth finishFinal sandingprior to applying final coatSmoothing surface imperfections, between coats of varnishFor gently stripping varnishRemoving rough texturesFORPLASTERFOR VARNISHCreating a satin smooth finishFinal sanding prior toapplying final coatSmoothing surface imperfections, between coats of paintSmoothing surfaceimperfectionsStripping painted surfacesFOR PAINTFinishingFinal sanding prior toapplying first coatSmoothing surface imperfectionsSanding bare woodSanding rough sawn woodFOR WOOD406080GRIT120180240EXTRA FINE280320400OAKEY - MADE FOR PROFESSIONALS SINCE 18335
