Data Aire the pioneer and builder of themost complete line ofprecision cooling equipmentData Aire’s first precision cooling system was developed by data processing engineers who soughtoptimum environmental conditions for early computers. It was clear that “people comfort” airconditioning system were unable to meet the environmental requirements of computers and dataprocessing equipment. Precision environmental control equipment with high sensible cooling ratioswas a necessity. Problems with paper sticking , head crash, and static electricity were eliminated.Humidity fluctuation were controlled saving possible electrical and mechanical failures and moreimportantly – Downtime. Data Aire’s innovative response to the challenge of eliminating problemswithin the computer room environment was the start of wide use precision cooling. As in the past, Data Aire is meeting today’s challenge of not only the computer room but alsothe ever expanding telecommunications industry where precision cooling is vital to our everydaycommunications. Telecommunication equipment requires a controlled environment with clean andproperly distributed air. As in the computer room, the environment must be precisely controlled – 24hour a day, 365 days a year.Data Aire produces solutions. We have offered environmental control solutions to meet specific needsin the smallest of places and in areas of thousands of square feet. DESIGN FEATURESFRAME/CABINETFILTER SECTIONUnits are constructed with heliarc weldedtubular steel frames. The tubular constructionprovides for maximum strength and ease of access. Side and front panels can be easily removedwith quarter-turn fasteners allowing full accessto all unit components. All panels include 1 inchthick, 11/2 pound density insulation for protection and sound attenuation.Units are provided with 4 inch deep MERV 8,based on ASHRAE std 52.2, pleated filters. Thefilter section is accessible from the top or side ondownflow units and the right hand side on upflowunits.REHEATThree stage electric reheat is standard. Lowwatt density, finned, tubular sheathed coils areconstructed of stainless steel and provide amplecapacity to maintain room dry bulb conditionsduring dehumidification. Low-watt density coilseliminate ionization associated with open airelectric resistance heating.COIL SECTIONDesigned for draw through application, the computer selected dual circuited A-frame coil has aninterwoven surface that increases unit efficiencyat low load conditions. Air is drawn through bothcircuits of the coil at low velocity providing effective surface exposure with minimum turbulence.Air bypass is provided to prevent saturated airfrom being introduced into the controlled space. The coil sits in a stainless steel drain pan.HUMIDIFICATIONData Aire Series units include an electric steamgenerator humidifier with “quick change” disposable cylinders and auto-flush cycle. The steamgenerator humidifier with its patented control system optimizes cylinder life and energy efficiencyby concentrating incoming water to a predetermined conductivity much higher than that of anyentering water. The control system continuouslymonitors the conductivity in the cylinder throughits electronics which allows water to be flushedas often as is necessary to maintain the capacity at this design conductivity. The high designconductivity results in a minimum flushing ofheated water which saves energy. The humidifier is designed to allow all units at any voltageto produce full rated steam output capacity at anoptimum low water level based on this designconductivity.FAN SECTIONThe centrifugal, forward curved, double width, double inlet blower configuration is engineeredfor quiet reliable operation. The dual belt drivenvariable pitch drive section provides adjustableair flow capability to match the load requirementsof the controlled space. The draw through designinsures even air distribution across the coil, lowinternal cabinet pressure losses and static sealingof the filter section. Motors are mounted on anadjustable slide base and have internal overloadprotection.5

Refrigeration CircuitsDual refrigeration circuits include high efficiency hermetic scroll type compressors. Scroll compressorsrepresent new yet proven compressor technology. Scroll compressors offer a combination of reliability, performance, and efficiency. System noise is inherently quieter with scroll compressors.Scroll compressors offer:Simplicity - Fewer parts. Two components, a fixed scroll and orbiting scroll, replace approximately 15 partsrequired to do the same work.Improved Starting Ability - With the scroll design the internal compression components always start unloaded even if the system pressures are not balanced. Since internal compressor pressures are always balanced at start-up, low voltage characteristics are excellent for scroll compressors.Energy Efficiency - Scroll compressors are at least 10% more efficient than reciprocating type compressors. The suction and discharge processes of a scroll compressor are physically separated. This reduces heattransfer between the suction and discharge gas. In a piston type compressor the cylinder is exposed to bothsuction and discharge gas. This results in high heat transfer reducing the compressor efficiency.Scroll compressor compression and discharge processes are very smooth. Gas is compressed in approximately 11/2 revolutions compared to less than 1/2 revolution for a piston.Scrolls require no valves. Piston compressors require both suction and discharge valves. No valves, novalve losses.Durability - Significant design effort and system cost are required to protect piston compressors from slugging and debris. Scroll compressors are designed to be more tolerant of both liquid and debris.Reliability - Scrolls contain fewer moving parts resulting in greater reliability. Proven performance meansfewer maintenance calls for field personnel.Lower Sound - Systems properly designed with scroll compressors will be inherently quieter. On average, the compressor is up to 5 decibels quieter. (Sound characteristics of a scroll compressor are different thanthat of a reciprocating compressor. These do not effect system performance or reliability)These durable, heavy duty compressors have no gaskets or seals, eliminating the possibility of refrigerant oroil leaking into the controlled space or environment. Each refrigeration circuit includes built-in compressor overload protection, crankcase heater, filter drier, sight glass, adjustable expansion valve with externalequalizer, low pressure override timer (air cooled units), manual reset high pressure control, and anti-shortcycle timer.Water/glycol cooled units include counterflow condensers sized to provide the required capacity for heatrejection with minimum water/glycol flow and total pressure drop. Head pressure regulating valves control6

OPTIONSAuxiliary Chilled Water Coil - Where an existing chilled water loop is available, units can befitted with an auxiliary chilled water coil. Unitswill operate using the chilled water for cooling.Upon a loss of water flow or an increase in roomtemperature the system will bring on compressor(DX) cooling. The Auxiliary Chilled Water coilincludes the next size motor. Separate piping isprovided for the chilled water coil and refrigeration connections.Energy Saver Coil - The Data Aire EnergySaver Coil is built into the system to providetotal required capacity. Whenever the incomingwater/glycol temperature is below 45o F/7.2o C,Energy Saver cooling is available. Energy Savermode operates in the following range: returnair setpoint plus deadband plus 2 degrees. TheEnergy Saver will operate providing there is aneed for cooling. The valve will open at setpointplus deadband. The valve will modulate as longas the space is between setpoint plus deadbandplus 2 degrees. If the temperature falls belowthe deadband minus setpoint, the valve will closeand the space is considered satisfied. While stillin Energy Saver with the valve modulating, if thetemperature goes beyond setpoint plus 2 degrees, the Energy Saver valve will close and DX coolingwill begin.Auxiliary Chilled Water Coil/Compressor Supplement - The Auxiliary Chilled Water Coil canbe provided with compressor supplement forextended savings by allowing the compressor tosupplement operation as needed when the chilledwater is not sufficient on a stand alone basis. Anair discharge sensor is factory installed. (See Energy Saver/Compressor Supplement for details)The Energy Saver coil includes the next size motor, 3-way pressure control valve on the condenser water circuit, and 3-way valve on the economycoil. Common piping for coil and condensers isprovided.Remote Temperature and Humidity Sensors- Temperature and humidity sensors may beordered for remote wall mounting. Sensors areprovided in a wall mount plastic case for remotesensing of temperature and humidity. 25 feet ofshielded cable is provided for field wiring.Energy Saver/Compressor Supplement - Unitswith Energy Saver option can be provided withcompressor supplement if the Energy Saver isnot sufficient as a stand alone system. When theincoming water/glycol temperature is below thesetpoint of the water changeover thermostat, theEnergy Saver is enabled (even if there is no callfor cooling). Upon a call for cooling (setpointplus deadband), the valve will open proportionally - 10% for each 0.1o above setpoint plus deadband. The compressor will come on at setpointplus deadband plus 1o (the valve is 100% open atthis point). The compressor will go off at setpointplus deadband plus 0.7o. The valve will closeproportionally - 10% for each 0.1o below setpointplus deadband. An air discharge sensor is factoryinstalled.Smoke Detector - A unit mounted smoke detectorwill shut down the unit if smoke is sensed. Theunit mounted microprocessor control will soundan alarm and display a “SMOKE DETECTED”message. The smoke detector is mounted in thereturn air stream and is provided with auxiliarycontacts.Unit Mounted Disconnect - A unit mountednonautomatic disconnect switch is installed inthe high voltage electrical section. The operatingmechanism (handle) protrudes through the decorative exterior panel. The operating mechanismprevents access to the high voltage electricalcomponents by not allowing entry until switchedto the “OFF” position.10

OPTIONS, continuedHot Gas Bypass - A hot gas bypass valve isavailable for applications that create low suctionpressure conditions that could lead to coil freezeand/or compressor cycling. In facilities suchconditions generally exist in instances where; 1)a unit’s dehumidification mode needs to run forextended period of time; or 2) a room is designedfor low entering air conditions; or 3) a unit isutilizing an oversized condenser at low outdoorambient conditions.Tandem Scroll Compressors - Units may beordered with tandem scroll compressors whenfour stage compressor control is required. Unitsremain dual circuited. Tandem scrolls offer theinherent advantages of scroll technology: higherefficiency, increased reliability, lower sound, andexcellent liquid handling.Scroll tandems offer two steps of modulation sothat one or both compressors (per circuit) can rundepending upon the load of the system, resultingin part-load efficiency equal to full load efficiency. Two-step modulation is possible becauseof a carefully designed tubing configuration andthe scroll’s superior ability to tolerate liquid. The built-in discharge check valve, present in allscroll compressors, effectively prevents liquidmigration in the off compressor. Oil migrationis controlled with two specially designed oil andgas equalization lines. Adding this option to 30ton unit will increase cabinet size to 144”. (SeeSupplement TS1-99: Tandem Scroll TechnicalPerformance)When the system suction pressure is high enoughit will maintain pressure on the leaving side ofthe hot gas bypass valve to keep the valve portclosed. Should the suction pressure decreasebelow the desired setting, the pressure from thesuction line forces the diaphragm, which off-setsthe spring pressure, allowing the spring to pushthe valve open. The opening of this valve allowssome hot gas to mix with the refrigerant in thesuction line raising the evaporator pressure. Thisincreases the suction pressure in the system backto the desired setting. The hot gas bypass can bemanually adjusted within a certain range to finetune the unit to a desired suction pressure in thefield.Semi-Hermetic Compressors - Cast iron semihermetic compressors are available on all DataAire Series units. Semi-hermetic compressorsare mounted on vibration isolators and have builtin overload protection. The compressors alsoinclude oil sight glass, reversible oil pump forforced feed lubrication, and suction line strainer.Units with semi-hermetic compressor option alsoinclude solenoid valves and mufflers. Maximumrpm is 1750.Humidifier Modulating Control - Modulatingcontrol may be added to the unit’s steam generator humidifier. Modulating control will allow thehumidifier to match its output to the signal fromthe humidity control. A self-regulating auto flushis included.Hot Water Reheat - Where hot water is available, a water coil for reheat is offered. The coilis designed for 150 psi maximum water pressureand includes a 2-way valve (a 3-way is alsoavailable). Units with the hot water reheat do notinclude electric reheat. Supplemental reheat maybe ordered.Four Step Control (Cylinder Unloading) - Unitswith semi-hermetic compressors may be orderedwith four step control for periods of low load conditions. Cylinder unloaders on one head of eachcompressor reduces compressor cooling capacity.Four steps of cooling are available to meet changing room conditions.Compressor Sequence:Step 1 Lead compressor starts with unloadervalve activatedStep 2 Lead compressor running at full loadStep 3 Lag compressor starts with unloadervalve activatedStep 3 Lag compressor running at full loadHot Gas Reheat - The unit’s hot gas dischargemay be used for reheat and maximum systemefficiency. Supplemental electric reheat may beordered in addition to the hot gas reheat.11

OPTIONS, continuedPump Enclosure - Pump enclosures are available for either single or dual pump applications.Pump enclosures are vented and weather resistant. When ordered with pumps, the pumps arefactory mounted in the enclosure ready for fieldpiping and wiring.3-Way Water Regulating Valve - 3-way waterregulating valves are available on water andglycol cooled units to replace the standard 2-wayvalve. The 3-way valve controls the water/glycolflow rate to maintain the required capacity undervarying conditions. This option is recommendedon units with dual pump applications.Integral Pump Enclosures - Pumps may be factory mounted as an integral part of the dry cooler.A 30” extension is added to the dry cooler.Pumps are pre-piped and wired and includesshut-off valves. A flow switch is included withdual pumps.Upflow Air Discharge Plenum - Upflow airdischarge plenums are fully insulated with frontdischarge grille. Side grilles for both or one sideare available. Plenums are 18” high and paintedto match the unit’s color.Pump Auto-Changeover - Dual pump packagesmay be provided with a pump auto-changeovercontrol and NEMA 4 flow switch (field installed). The pump auto-changeover control is factorywired and mounted in the dry cooler control box.The pump auto-changeover control provides automatic pump changeover in the event of a pumpfailure. Upon pump changeover, an audiblealarm will sound at the indoor unit and a message(“STANDBY PUMP ON”) will be displayed onthe indoor unit microprocessor display.Floorstands - Floorstands are adjustable ( 2inches) and may be ordered with factory installedturning vane or with seismic construction.High Efficiency Filters - Standard filters areMERV 8. Higher efficiency filters are available(consult factory regarding efficiency percentageand unit static pressures).Condensate Pumps - Condensate pumps may beordered factory installed or shipped loose for fieldinstallation.
