Vision 2011ANNUAL REPORTThere’s no doubt that the last fewyears have been trying for manypeople. The CoxHealth Foundationmeasures the climate of need by thenumbers asking for help.Good Samaritan Fund applications are for those who need a helping hand with theirmedical bills. In the past five years these applications averaged 15 to20 a month. Today theyaverage 70 to 90. The same goes for the Bethlehem Fund for expectant mothers and theCancer Services Fund. The requests are coming in faster than the dollars to support them.In 2011 what became more common was the unusual or unexpected needs. The kinds ofthings for which there is no insurance coverage or state/federal aid. Examples includepressure garments for post surgical patients to treat lymphedema, home support aids forthe bathroom, and a special mask to screen out particles that made the patient sick. If theserequests fit into one of the Patient Service Funds, an application is made and the item canbe funded. But when there is no fit there are few options to provide support. This is why the CoxHealth Foundation is resolved to find solutions to theproblem of unfunded medical needs through a new fund called HUG;Help for Uninsured Grants. The fund is being named in honor of formerCoxHealth administrator Neil Wortley who had a hug for everyone hemet. In the 1950’s, Wortley was known for running down to the cornerdrug store and picking up a medication that a patient couldn’t afford. Hisgenerous spirit of “patient first” is part of the legacy of CoxHealth.Inside2 ContributionsThe goal for 2012 is to raise 100,000 to start this fund and have a placeto draw from when patients or their health care worker calls. These dollarswill be the only known resource of their kind currently in this region. They will empower physicians, nurses and patients with the knowledgethat there is hope for the unexpected need to be met where today there isno place else to turn. To make a gift to the HUG fund, use the enclosedenvelope or go online to www.coxhealthfoundation.comand pick Wortley HUG Fund from the drop down boxon the Donate Now page. The employee giving program is called the PatronCircle. In 2011 nearly half of all eligible CoxHealth employeesdonated to one of the 34 funds for a total of 267,965.99.The new ER command center was the focalpoint of operation during the Joplin tornado. The generosity however extends beyond CoxHealth into thecommunity it serves. Following the Joplin F5 tornado, the CoxHealthFoundation organized a collection drive for toiletries, bedding, dogfood, towels, cleaning supplies and more. CoxHealth employeesresponded and three trailer trucks were filled and sent to our neighborsrecovering from this unimaginable disaster. CoxHealth had providedDaily deliveries of goods arrived from departmentsacross CoxHealth for Joplin tornado victims.an immediate response of medical staff the night of the tornado andfollowed up with this outpouring of kindness.CoxHealth FoundationAnnual Report20113

Area of Greatest NeedDonors who direct their gifts to the Area of Greatest Need allow the CoxHealthFoundation to have resources available when a critical need arises for patients, staffor the community. In 2011 following a nationwide surge of violence in public places,a need was identified within the health systems security department. Officersprovide their own equipment and one item they did not have was bullet proof vests. If an incident were to occur at CoxHealth, the security officers would be the firstline of defense. Protecting them means protecting our patients, staff and visitors. The CoxHealth Foundation purchased bullet proof vests for every officer toensure the highest standards of safety are in place everywhere at CoxHealth. To Honor and RememberWhen making a memorial gift, many donors want to know their donation hada lasting effect, providing a legacy for their loved one. Memorial donations tothe CoxHealth Foundation have helped to maintain the Healing Garden at theHulston Cancer Center, provided wigs for cancer patients, created scholarshipsfor nursing students and new chairs for dialysis patients to enhance theircomfort during the long hours spent sitting during treatment. This is just a fewof the ways memorial gifts directed to health care can have an impact. In2011, 548 memorial gifts were received totaling 73,294.34.Giving a Gift-In-KindIn 2011 the CoxHealth Foundation introduced a new program called “Cars forCharity.” This allows a donor to donate a car, truck, RV or even a boat with allproceeds coming back to the Foundation. This turnkey approach offers a serviceto the donor in towing the vehicle away and providing the tax receipt on the spot.A clear title is all that’s required. Donors are finding this a great way to make agift and remove the burden of an unwanted vehicle. Since the program began, 10vehicles have been sold or are in the process of being auctioned. To donate avehicle call 1-800-274-5909.4Your gift touches lives daily.Thank you for your support!

Cox College on the fast track to meet student’s needs.Dr. Anne Brett and Dean Tricia Wagner visit India to etablishan exchange program for Cox College students. In a fluctuating economy nursing and health science careerscontinue to provide alot of opportunity and availability in thelocal and national market. Cox College has grown its programsto meet the demand. Students can now receive an ASN, BSN,BSN-accelerated for those who already hold a college degree ormasters in nursing with specialties as a Clinical Nurse Leader,Nurse Educator or as a Family Nurse Practitioner. HealthSciences include a bachelors in Diagnostic Imaging, a DieteticsInternship, Medical Assisting, Billing and Coding andprograms in Radiography and Transcription. Of the more than800 students now attending Cox College, a greater percenteach year is requiring financial aid to attend. This is where theCoxHealth Foundation plays an important role.In 2011 an annual appeal was waged to seek support fromBurge and Cox College alumni for the next generation of graduates. Scholarships generated from alumni, community and friends of the College now number 46 for nursing and 4 for health sciences. As federal aiddisappears and loan dollars are harder to come by, scholarships remain onesource that students count on to help them achieve their education. All studentsmust complete an application, submit two references,an essay and their cumulative GPA. Approximately onethird of applicants are awarded scholarships, makingthis a priority area for the CoxHealth Foundation tofind additional funding for coming years. The BurgeClass of 1961 and the family of Daphn Sundstromadded the two newest scholarships to the roster in 2011.Scholarship donor Madge Arthuris surrounded by her 2011scholarship recipients.Coming in 2012–a study abroad program at MercyHospital in Calcutta, India. Dr. Anne Brett, presidentof Cox College and Dean Tricia Wagner visited in 2011 to help develop the programfor students. Mercy is a 173 bed hospital founded in 1953 by Assemblies of GodA room inside Mercymissionaries Mark and Huldah Buntain, whose daughter is a Burge graduate! EachHospital in Calcutta India.year this hospital treats over 100,000 patients, nearly half for free. The extreme povertyof the region and the limitations of equipment and facilities will help our students to use and develop skill setsthat they wouldn’t otherwise experience in their normal course of training. Cox College hopes to send the firstgroup in Fall of 2012 as an extention of the BSN program. For information on how to help support a scholarship for global studies contact the Foundation at 269-7109.The mission of the CoxHealth Foundation is to facilitate throughphilanthropy the quality health care, education and researchprovided by CoxHealth.CoxHealth FoundationAnnual Report20117
