Loading and SupportsTECHNICAL GUIDEFirst and foremost, a cable tray must act as an effective and durable support for cables. The mechanical performance of cable tray products and accessories are tested against the demanding requirements imposed bythe NEMA VE-1 Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and international standard IEC 61537. These standards helpensure cable tray systems safety support cabling in a wide variety of applications.LOAD TESTINGLegrand/Cablofil WMCT has been engineered and tested perNEMA VE-1 to support loads that exceed it’s fill capacity. SAFETYSAFE WORKING LOADSWhile many Legrand/Cablofil supports utilized our FastAssembly System (FAS) which offer simple one-step lockingtabs that require no additional hardware to secure WMCTto supports, our WMCT have been tested to UL, CSA, NEMAVE-1 and IEC standards. Cablofil wire mesh tray and supports are designed to support any cable load allowed by theNEC when supports are spaced on 8’ spans. Only the heaviest cables (750 kcmil mulitconductor power or larger) mayrequire shorter spans. For specific loading go to the interactive table on www.legrand.us/cablofil and choose your exactcable for detailed cable capacity and span requirements.CABLOFIL is only designedto support cables. Under nocircumstances should it beused as a walkway.TECHNICAL GUIDEIn the event of critical overload,a mesh structure becomes likea hammock.POSITIONING OF THE SPLICE (general scenario applicable to all spans)To get the best performance from tray, choosing the right couplers is just as important as their positioning. CABLOFIL couplershave been designed and tested to provide high levels of mechanical and electrical performance. To maximise performance, follow the recommendations below:PossibleOptimumL/2L/5100% PERFORMANCEFor best results, place the couplers at1/5th of the way along the span. Not Recommended70% PERFORMANCEIf the coupling is at L/2, a coefficient of 0.7should be applied to the permissible load.Never put the support under coupler.POSITIONING OF THE SUPPORTSChanges of level and direction:Put supports in place before there is any deflection of the cable tray route. It is recommended to place supports at the startand end of 90 bends. A support must be positioned in the middle of large-radius bends.www.legrand.us/cablofil7

Materials and FinishesTECHNICAL GUIDEUncontrolled corrosion is a recurrent problem with all applications involving metals, it may lead to a reduction in theperformance and lifetime of the installation. Cable trays aremainly exposed to atmospheric corrosion. The environmentin which the cable trays are installed is therefore the maincriteria in the choice of surface treatment, or type of steel.air or water (condensedmoisture, rain or spray). The reaction producesthe chemical compoundFe(OH)3, more commonlyknown as rust.Atmospheric corrosion affecting metals involves a chemicalreaction between the iron found in steel and dioxygen inC OATED STEELSGalvanic protection of steel is a sacrificial process. Zinc,in contact with an oxidising agent, is converted into zinchydrocarbonate (white) thus protecting the steel.m Recommendedu PossiblePGEZmmIndoor installation, controlledenvironmentOutdoor installation, urbanenvironmentChemical industries, nitrateexplosivesMarine, sulphurous environmentAcid or alkaline environmentsGCDCmmuuuuuu304LHot dipped galvanized after manufactureGC ASTM A123 standard316LmmumFood production environmentmmHalogen environmentumSteel Grade QualityOur tray is constructed of precision engineered, high qualitysteel wire. ISO 9000 certified, Legrand/Cablofil wire cable trayis subjected to rigorous quality control at every stage of themanufacturing processes.Electrogalvanising after manufactureEZ ASTM A633 standardThe cable tray, manufactured using untreated steel wire, ispickled and then immersed in an electrolyte containing zinc. Zincis then deposited on it by passing an electric current. A smoothblue-grey, fairly glossy appearance is obtained to a greater orlesser extent depending on the pH value of the electrolytic bathused. The color and level of gloss have no negative or positiveeffect on the corrosion resistance of the coating. The cable trays or accessories, manufactured from untreatedsteel sheet or wire, are degreased and pickled before beingimmersed in a bath of molten zinc. The entire product istherefore covered with a thick layer of zinc.A light grey, rough appearance is obtained.NOTE: Any white marks due to the formation of zinchydroxycarbonate which might appear on the surface have noinfluence on the corrosion resistance.Geomet DC ASTM F1136 standardGeomet is a treatment based on zinc and aluminium. As itdoes not contain any chromium VI (hexavalent), it complieswith the RoHS Directive.Offering protection equivalent to GC, it is used for smallaccessories and fixings which are difficult to hot dip galvanize.Powder Coated PaintBLPE ASTM D3451 standardResin-based paint is applied to the cable tray using anelectrostatic powder and then cured in an oven. Black isstandard. The entire range of colors are available. Mainly usedfor aesthetic reasons and to help identify cable routes, it offersvery good corrosion resistance and the industries only ULclassified painted tray system.1500316L1400 Ongoing protectionCarbonsteelZinc hydroxideStainlesssteel12001000Fe cathodWhen a wire cable tray is cut, the fact that a wire has been cut doesnot affect the level of protection. Decontamination of stainless steelsThere are two key stages for prolonging the service life of theproduct and, by implication, the installation: Pickling in acid after degreasing eliminates pollutants. Passivation artificially creates a film of chromium oxide onthe surface of the steel.Corrosion-resistance tests involving salt spray and S02(sulphur dioxide) highlight the importance of these twoprocesses.Pickling and passivation give CABLOFIL’s stainless steel a veryclean uniform and a distinctly matte finish. All CABLOFIL stainless steel products are pickled andpassivated.UntreatedPickled andpassivatedUntreatedNickelCopper320 1400Brass400 220800Tin550 370 230 150Steel750 570 430 350 2000Aluminium840 660 520 440 290900Chromium950 770 630 550 400 200 110Zinc1150 970 830 750 600 400 310 200Steel0Chromium180TinNickel0ZincSince it contains molybdenum, stainless steel 316L is ableto resist intergranular corrosion.
