VACANCYConsultant in Old Age PsychiatryEast Dunbartonshire CMHT28 hours per week 80,653 (GBP) to 107,170 (GBP) per annum (pro-rata)Tenure: PermanentThis vacancy is to backfill 5 sessions for Community Older Adult ConsultantPsychiatrist who has taken up a clinical management role. There is an additional 2sessions for consultant psychiatry work within the specialist Huntington’s Servicewhich is a Greater Glasgow and Clyde boardwide service. The Huntington’s post willbe based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan, Glasgow with 0.5outpatient clinic and 0.5 domiciliary visits. The Huntington’s service covers the boardarea of Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Most patients within the Huntington’s servicewill also be open to other Consultant psychiatry colleagues and their teams. For theWoodlands CMHT post you will be working alongside another 0.5 older adultcommunity psychiatrist and 0.6 inpatient older adult consultant psychiatrist and bepart of a well established and integrated CMHT. The Woodlands CMHT coversapproximately 12,000 population of the Strathkelvin area of East Dunbartonshire and2,000 from the North Lanarkshire corridor. This is for a population that is mainly over65 years of age with both functional and organic mental disorders but also includessome younger people with dementia. Community work will include consultantpsychiatry input to an expanding care home liaison team which has recentlyintegrated with Adult care home liaison and has regular support from clinicalpsychology.The successful candidate will join a team of 5.1 full time Consultants working in theNorth East sector of Glasgow. The Woodlands CMHT is supported by 0.6 SpecialityGrade Doctor and FY2 or CT1-3 Junior Doctors are commonly placed withWoodlands and older adult NE CMHT and inpatient units which are at Jura and IslaWard, Stobhill Hospital Glasgow. These are both 20 bedded wards and are thereceiving wards for the Woodlands, The Belmont and Parkview Resource centres.The Woodlands CMHT is a busy but well ordered team with excellent and supportiveworking relationships between all the senior medical staff and with the wider multidisciplinary team. There are monthly case based discussions with Woodlands andNorth East Older Adult Consultant colleagues, attached SpRs and SAS doctors.The job is advertised as a 6:1 DCC:SPA splitApplicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and Completion ofHigher Training in Old Age Psychiatry and inclusion on the GMC Specialist Registraror within six months of CCT or CESR (Old Age Psychiatry) at time of interview.

Assessment beds forpatients with both functional and organic mental illness are located on six hospitalsites; Stobhill, Gartnavel Royal, Vale of Leven, Leverndale, The Royal Alexandria inPaisley and Inverclyde Royal.A Clinical Director for Old Age Psychiatry takes a strategic overview of the wholeservice.All Older People’s Mental Health Services within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clydeare now managed by Health and Social Care PartnershipsThe successful candidate will be working alongside six other Consultants in Old AgePsychiatry delivering services to the population of East Dunbartonshire and NorthEast Glasgow.Clinical ServicesInpatient servicesInpatient Older People’s Mental Health Services are based at Stobhill Hospital.There are two acute wards; one 20 bedded functional assessment ward and one 20bedded organic assessment ward.Hospital LiaisonThere is a dedicated older adult hospital liaison service which provides input to theGlasgow Royal Infirmary Hospital. Deliberate self-harm presentations are covered bythe Adult Liaison Psychiatry team.Community Mental Health TeamsWithin East Dunbartonshire there is an Older Peoples Community Mental HealthTeam based at Woodlands Centre, Kirkintilloch,. This team provides care andtreatment to patients living in the Strathkelvin part of East Dunbartonshire and thosein the North Lanarkshire corridor. The other community mental health teams are theBelmont Centre covering North Glasgow and Parkview Centre covering eastGlasgow. The Woodlands Team is multidisciplinary and has medical staff, ClinicalPsychology, OT, CPNs, a Care Home Liaison Nurse and Post Diagnostic SupportWorkers. There is good medical administration support.Huntington’s Specialist TeamThe Consultant Psychiatry Huntington’s Disease Management Clinic providesholistic assessment and management advice about the cognitive andneuropsychiatric features of Huntington’s Disease and provides advice aboutpharmacological management of the disorder. The Huntington’s Disease

Management Clinic also accepts referrals for pre-symptomatic patients, for examplefor psychiatric assessment during the process of genetic testing or for clinicalassessment to help identify symptom onset.The consultant psychiatrist will work alongside the tendering service which is theScottish Huntington’s Association and has close working relationships with PrimaryCare, other CMHTs, Clinical Genetics and Neurology.The area of Huntington’s research is strong in Glasgow with another Older AdultConsultant Psychiatrist supporting this service. There is a potential for the postholder to engage in Huntington’s research in time.Support Staff for Community JobMedicalPsychiatric care in NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde is Consultant led with supportfrom Psychiatric, GP and FY2 trainees in addition to sessions from experiencedSpeciality Grade Doctors. There is good working relationships with our GP andGeriatrician colleagues.NursingThe Community Psychiatric Nurses who work in our Older Adult Community MentalHealth Teams are in general very experienced nurses who have been in post for asignificant period of time. Care home liaison within East Dunbartonshire has recentlyexpanded to include a virtual team with the Adult (medical) nursing liaison service.PsychologyWoodlands CMHT have a full time Psychologist who often has a psychology trainee.Allied Health ProfessionsBoth inpatient and community teams have input from Occupational Therapy andPhysiotherapy. It is also possible to access Podiatry, Speech & Language andDietetic Services as required. A number of the Consultants have aspecific interest in research and are involved in a number of studies.

Clinical AuditThe Mental Health Division is particularly keen on clinical audit that establisheseffectiveness of interventions. As above the post holder would be encouraged totake part in this as part of developing SPA activities.Management and Committee WorkThe post holder will be members of local Divisions of Psychiatry and the NHS GG&CDivision of Old Age Psychiatry.
