2Your SCHOOLSSuperintendent’s Viewby Dr. Guy SconzoBy 2023—when this year’s fourth gradersbecome high school seniors – Humble ISD expectsto serve nearly 52,000 students. Being in a growingcommunity means the school district must plan forthe future. That planning will quicken the pace thisschool year with several initiatives related to enrollment growth. This school year, Humble ISD will breakground on two new schools: our 28th elementarycampus and our 9th middle school. The campusesare being constructed on 45-acres in a new, masterplanned community called The Groves, which islocated off of West Lake Houston Parkway and southof Will Clayton Parkway.Elementary #28 will be designed for 950 students and will open in August 2017. Middle School#9 will be designed for 1,250 students and will openin August 2018. These two schools are the first ofsix additional campuses that demographers tell uswill be needed by 2023 due to enrollment growth. In addition to the groundbreakings, our for-ward-thinking School Board has planned a Districtwide Facilities and Optimum Usage Study. Withenrollment projected to grow by more than 10,000students in the next decade, now is the time to takea critical look at every building in the district.Physically, what is the condition of eachcampus? Are existing buildings being used in theoptimum way? These are the questions the study willaddress. Once completed, the study will be publiclyshared and citizens will be invited to give input onwhat school construction projects should occur.Back in 2008, voters approved school construction bonds. Those bond funds are being used topurchase land for all the new campuses (six schoolsin total) that demographers say will be needed, aswell as to construct three of the six schools. However, there will be a need for a bond referendum in2018 so that High School #7 can be built and openedby 2022. If High School #7 does not open in 2022,enrollment will have grown so much at Atascocitaand Summer Creek high schools that each will beserving 4,500 students or more!New homes, new schools, and new developments are exciting. But buildings are only brick andmortar, iron and steel. What’s even more excitingare the changes that will occur within the hearts andminds of students this school year as each advancesfurther in learning.Your child’s teachers, counselors and principalsspent the summer planning for 2015-2016 to be thebest year yet. Students will experience college andcareer readiness activities, digital learning, academicand co-curricular instruction, and service learningexperiences that inspire their curiosity and deepentheir understanding of the curriculum. The successof each child is what Humble ISD is all about!Humble ISD is especially honored this year byH-E-B for the statewide 2015 Excellence in Education Large District Award. August 20153Your SCHOOLSWelcome from the Board: We are vested in student successby Robert Sitton, School Board PresidentHumble ISD does not want to be among the bestschool districts in the Houston area; Humble ISD aimsto be among the best school districts in the UnitedStates. That relentless drive to be the very best is why Iam more excited than ever to be serving on the Boardof Trustees at this special point in time in our district’shistory. Our community is growing and thriving as hundreds of families choose to make their home in thenew subdivisions being built here. Our ease of accessto highways and the airport, world-class golf facilities, availability of medical services and higher educationclose to home, abundant trees, and waterfront continueto be big draws.Perhaps most importantly, Humble ISD schoolsput students on the road to success. Humble ISD’s2,650 graduates in 2015 were offered more than 20million in college scholarships. Fifty students in QuestEarly College High School’s Class of 2015 earned theirAssociate’s Degree in addition to their high schooldiploma, for a total of 3,480 college hours. More than1,800 certifications were earned by Humble ISD students during 2014-2015 in pharmacy technician, autocad, medical billing and coding, and other fields.Humble ISD employees are dedicated: from busdrivers to cafeteria workers, from warehouse workersto maintenance staff, from those who lead adults tothose who lead children. In the end, everyone playssome part, big or small, in the development of our com-munity, our schools, and especially our young people. They are counting on us!Being named by H-E-B as the best large district inTexas for 2015 validated that we are on the right path.As a School Board, some steps we have taken include: Allocated 30 million over the past three years tomake employee compensation more competitive.Humble ISD’s starting salary for teachers was nearlowest in a group of 14 comparable districts, but nowranks 6th out of 14 districts with beginning pay at 50,500. We want to attract and retain the best andbrightest! Conducted a first-ever curriculum audit and thenengaged the International Center for Leadership inEducation to improve curriculum rigor, Lead4Wardto enhance instructional strategies, and the StuderGroup to set performance goals for accountability. We are not wavering from these multi-year initiatives focused on continuous improvement. Evaluated programs to ensure resources are usedoptimally. This spring, the district’s bond ratingfrom Moody’s was upgraded. Moody’s news release stated: “The Aa1 rating reflects the district’swell-managed financial operations, evidenced bya trend of operating surpluses, which resulted inhealthy reserves and ample liquidity. The ratingis also based on the continuing trend of growth inthe district’s sizeable and diverse tax base that weexpect to continue in the near term, above averagesocioeconomic indices, and sustained enrollmentgrowth.”I am proud to be a life-long resident of HumbleISD, and part of a family of three generations ofHumble High School graduates including my mom,my brother, myself, and my son Jon. 6Your SCHOOLSAugust 2015Passion for teaching inspires, drives District Teachers of the YearHumble ISD is proud to honor the 2015-16 Teachers of the Year. Bree Welter of Ross Sterling Middle School is District and Secondary Teacherof the Year. Kimberly Gray of Greentree Elementary is Elementary Teacher of the Year. They were chosen from 44 Campus Teachers of the Year.Bryan “Bree” Welter found hisstart in life working in construction, building homes. Deep down he felt itwasn’t his true path. His grandfather’smantra–“Leave the world a better placethan when you found it”–echoed in hismind. When the housing market crashed,Welter found the courage to try something new.“I was still very unsure of my path, but one thing was certain; I wanted tomake a difference. I want to leave something great behind.”Welter remembered the peoplewho made the most difference in hisworld. It was then that pursuing a careerin teaching became clear to him.“Teachers made a difference in mylife,” he said. “I wanted to be like them. They inspired me to be a better version ofmyself. Becoming a teacher wasn’t justwhat I wanted to do, it was something Ihad to do.”Eight years later, Welter becameDistrict Teacher of the Year. He joinedRoss Sterling Middle School teachingsixth grade World Cultures and theAVID elective. In 2012 he became theAVID Coordinator for the campus, whichincludes staff development and training. In addition to AVID, Welter involves his classes in community service.HAAM Toy Drives, Congressman TedPoe’s “Letters to the Troops,” and TurkeyDrives are annual events for Welter’sclasses. He also initiated a Wilson RoadTrash Pick-Up to keep the roads near thecampus free of trash.“It’s so important for me to leadby example and practice what I preach,”said Welter.Welter served Ross Sterling inother capacities such as the “OrangeCrew” House Leader, the World CulturesTeam Leader and as an Advisor in theTeacher Mentor Program. His greatestaccomplishment, however, is facilitatinghis students’ success.“My contributions are so muchmore than the positions, titles, and outreach efforts. All the credit and recognitions go to my students. I have beenfortunate enough to witness them doamazing things.”“Heart is the driving force thatkeeps me motivated. It is the bridgethat connects student goals to studentsuccess. It is the push to try one moremethod, one more intervention, attendone more workshop because I cannotquit on any child. Teaching with yourheart is an investment of time, emotionand energy, but it brings the greatest joywhen a child I love gains confidence inhis abilities.”Kimberly Gray always knewshe had a heart for children. As a teenager, she always found herself drawnto young children. Whether she wasbabysitting, teaching Sunday school orworking in the church nursery, childrenbrought out the best in her, and viceversa. For Gray, teaching was a naturalprogression.“I love them unconditionally sothey know they are free to take risksand they are confident enough to workhard to achieve goals,” she said. “I cheereach attempt at new learning – successful or failed. With that kind of supporta child will gain confidence to alwayskeep asking and work to find answers.”Gray began her teaching careerin 1992 in Oklahoma before joiningHumble ISD in 2003. Previously, Graytaught primarily first and second gradersbefore stepping into her kindergartenclassroom at Greentree Elementary.“I feel incredibly lucky to be akindergarten teacher,” said Gray. “ToHumble Independent School District www.humbleisd.netbe a part of their foundation, to inspirethat love of learning and to see themlight up when it clicks. I cannot think ofanother profession that offers rewardsas abundant and fulfilling as that of aneducator.”As Elementary Teacher of the Year,Gray’s heart and passion for her studentsduring her 21 years as a teacher is appreciated by students, parents and peers.“I work in a building full of professional, caring and dedicated educators. To be recognized by my peers is thehighest honor I could achieve,” saidGray. “But the awards and recognitionsthat keep me working every day and fillmy heart with joy come from the five andsix year olds in the form of a hug, a fistbump, and in a stick-figure drawing ofthe two of us in a lopsided heart.”
