Every day in our community we lose students. They give up, they quit, they drop out. A variety of reasons contribute to this problem, but anunderlying theme exists. Often, these students stop trying becausethey feel hopeless, like no cares or believes in them. With your support, we are providing the hope needed for thesestudents through scholarships and college readiness programming.Five years ago, we launched our NEW Scholars program to helpunderserved students get into college. From sixth grade throughtwelfth grade, we focus on character development, school success, college preparedness, and parent engagement to help these studentson their path to college.Through NEW Scholars, our caring staff builds the lasting relationshipsneeded to have true success with our students and their parents. Thisencouragement and support in turn fosters their trust and a genuinebelief they can go to college.Board of DirectorsDebbie Helmle, PresidentGreen Bay OncologyMark Fischer, Vice PresidentAssociated BankBenjamin Hayes, TreasurerWipfli Financial AdvisorsSusan Schoenberger, SecretarySchneiderCassidy HickmanWipfli LLPMike HoganKIRonda KincheloeAnita ReschNicolet National BankWhile our true results won’t come until our first group of NEWScholars graduates from high school in 2021, we are seeing some earlysigns of success. Creating a Legacy Through GivingThroughout its history, Scholarships, Inc. has received generous contributions from community members who soughtto leave a legacy by supporting scholarships for local youth. These charitable donations offer hope and promise to hardworking, motivated students who have the desire and dedication to pursue a post-secondary degree, but not necessarilythe financial means to do so. Quite often, the scholarships are set up in honor or in memory of a loved one, and many havea unique purpose or objective as directed by the donor.Carol De Groot recently made such a gift to create a scholarship in her and her husband’s name. “Both I and my latehusband, Howard, were really big promoters of higher education,” she explains.“We instilled that same value in our five daughters, who all went on toreceive Bachelor’s and Masters degrees.”Since the age of 18, Carol has been teaching and inspiring childrenthrough education. Through teaching first graders at theFranciscan Sisters of Christan Charity in Manitowoc, travelinginternationally on science and research expeditions, and evenserving as an ad hoc professor at UW-Green Bay, she is “andalways will be, a lifelong learner.”When the opportunity arose, Carol knew that establishinga scholarship was the perfect way to honor Howard andshare her passion for education with local youth forperpetuity.Carol enjoys meeting her scholarship recipients at theannual Scholarships, Inc. Lamp of Knowledge Celebration. “Ilike hearing about each students’ unique background, and feeltheir excitement for what lies ahead,” she explains. So while Carol pursues her own adventures, knowing that her giftwill impact the leaders of tomorrow is powerful. “Education has been ahuge part of my life,” says Carol. “It’s rewarding to know that I’m helpinglocal students pave their own path. Howard would have loved that, too.”Howard and Carol De GrootNamed & Endowed ScholarshipsCarol De Groot smiles at the 2018 Lampof Knowledge Celebration with Kelly, recipient of the Howard & CarolDe Groot Scholarship3Kelly, freshmanUW-Eau ClairePsychology majorGreen Bay West High School graduate3Abe Abrohams MemorialAllouez Business AssociationBarbara AndereggHarold Barrett MemorialCarl & Eva BartzenJohn Bie MemorialRichard & Leah BrendenMemorialKarin Brown MemorialBob “Birdie” Burt MemorialCharles W. NEW Scholars Changed My LifeWhen Raquel ponders her future after high school, she says that attending college is really important to her. But it hasn’talways been that way. “Actually, college never crossed my mind before I filled out the application for NEW Scholars,” sheadmits.Raquel is part of the NEW Scholars Class of 2021, the very first cohort of students to sign up for the college readinessprogram. But as a fifth grader, she wasn’t convinced that college would be a part of herjourney. “If it wasn’t for Ms. Cram, my fifth grade teacher,” Raquel comments, “Imight never have even filled out the application.”Many NEW Scholars make that same comment: That before NEWScholars, they hadn’t imagined themselves as future collegestudents. The common thread? They will all be the first in theirfamilies to attend college, a prospect that for many, is dauntingand seems beyond reach. “College just didn’t seem like anoption for me because it wasn’t an option for most people Iknew,” explains Raquel. Now, as a sophomore at Green Bay East High School, Raquelstill smiles with pride when telling people that she’s in theprogram. “NEW Scholars has changed my life because itchanged the way I look at my future,” she explains. “And ithelped change the way my parents view college; it showedthem college is actually a reality for me.”“College just didn’t seemlike an option for mebecause it wasn’t an optionfor most people I knew.”In 2013 when Scholarships, Inc. introduced the NEW Scholarsprogram, the hope was to inspire real, lasting change in the livesof children. To not only allow them to dream, but to help them setRaquel writes reflections based on whatand achieve goals for their future. “We chose to invest in firstshe’s read in NEW Scholarsgeneration, low income students who had the promise for a brightfuture, but needed a little help getting to it,” explains Brent Roubal.“Through after-school programming and parent workshops, we’re meeting our objectives.”Thanks to you, our donors and friends, these children and their families are realizing a future in which they have options. Afuture that, without NEW Scholars, would not exist for them. How does NEW Scholars impact our community?NEW Scholars addresses the huge gaps that exist between lower and higher income students in degree attainment, and helpsour community’s low-income students learn skills and resources that can lead them to a degree. The benefits of participating in this program will be permanent and life changing. Long-term support provides our studentswith access to college and advancement opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available to them. With better earningpotential and more freedom of choice in the job market than they’d have without a college degree, they will enjoy increasedjob satisfaction and a better quality of life.9Raquel, NEW ScholarSophomoreGreen Bay East High SchoolJust think: The opportunity for these students to pursue a post-secondary education literally means changing the course oftheir future; of ending the cycle of poverty that so many low-income families have been stuck in for generations.10
