2007The leaf springs on a vehicle have several important functions. They carrythe weight and the load of the vehicle’s body, and they also absorb theshocks caused by uneven roads. During braking and acceleration, theytake up forces which try to “wind up” the springs, which means thatstrain increases at one end while it is reduced at the other. In older constructions, the springs had smooth brass bushes. Today, one mostly usesrubber to metal bonded bushes for heavy vehicles, while lighter vehiclescan have leaf springs with only rubber bushes. The bushes and the boltstake up all forces, which arise in a moving vehicle and transmit them tothe body.Kilen springs are manufactured to the highest standard from top qualitysteel in an ISO 9001:2000 environment.All Kilen springs are inspected and tested to ensure the highestquality standards.Kilen also offer a wide range of standard, heavy duty, sports coilsprings and gas springs.Important information1. Always check the form and notes of your old spring against the cataloguedetails before choosing your part.2. We recommend that leaf springs are always replaced in pairs.3. Changing a spring can be a dangerous job and we recommend thatyou follow a recognised repair manual when changing a leaf spring.4. When removing a leaf spring, first unfasten the spring from the axleand then from the fitting points on the body of the vehicle.5. Check and clean all fitting points and repair or replace them asnecessary.6. Always replace U-bolts.7. When replacing a leaf spring, first fasten the spring to the fitting pointson the body of the vehicle and then attach to the axle and fit the U-bolts.8. It is very important to ensure that the U-bolts or spring clamps areproperly tightened to the correct level of torque. We recommend thatyou follow a recognised repair manual to check the correct torque.9. If the clamps are not sufficiently tightened the springs will eventually bedamaged and safety will be compromised.Reprinting or copying is only permissible with the written consent of the editor.
