Another twovirtual concerts are scheduled — one coming up thisweek, and one on July 1that will feature musiciansfrom Miami-Dade Collegeand Panama, Spain andItaly.Like other members,Rojas had found differentways to raise funds to payfor the long-planned trip inMarch. Rojas, a violinist, held a cocktail party, atwhich she performed, at ahome to which friends andfamily were invited. Shealso used money saved upfrom her quinceañera, acelebration of a girl’s 15thA moment from a virtual concert by the South Florida YouthSymphony, as seen on a computer monitor. Another concertis coming up this week, and there’ll also be one on July 1.birthday. All in all, she hadpaid about 1,700 towardthe trip. The South Florida YouthSymphony also contributed 29,000 toward students’travel fees. However, thetravel company will nowreimburse only some of themonies. Thirty-three students were to take the trip, which also included sightseeing. A few members ofthe Miami-Dade College’sOrchestra had also plannedto attend. The youth symphony, anonprofit organization, wasfounded in 1964 by Carmen Nappo — former conductor of the Miami Ballet, the Miami MetropolitanSymphony and the Founder/conductor of “Holidayon Ice” — who saw a needfor children and youths tolearn and perform thegreat masters of the musical world. The orchestraempowers student musicians from ages 3 to 22,without regard to race, orientation, gender orreligion. The yearly schoolyear fee is 450 per student. A summer camp isalso offered. The orchestrahas also performed in Nicaragua, the Czech Republicand other nations.Using technology, Hialeah Miami Lakes HighSchool band teacher andformer South Florida YouthSymphony member KevinSegura is working withExecutive and MusicalDirector Marjorie Hahn toproduce the virtual concerts. Using iMovieand Garageband, Seguracompiles the videos andproduces about a virtualconcert that’s about sixminutes long.“We have a very fineworking relationship in ourprogram and educationalsystem that serves familiesand all children equally, and it’s important for families to see and hear this atthis time,” said Hahn, whois the step-daughter ofNappo. The group started theZoom classes in early April.“It felt weird,” Rojassaid. “I was accustomed toseeing my friends andhugging them, follow up onnews and seeing them oncamera. It hurts becausethese are my people.”Before the pandemic, thegroup practiced on Sundays at the Pawley Creative Arts Center at theMiami-Dade College NorthCampus.Harold Rivas, 18, saidthat aside from raisingfunds, the group hadworked hard on its performance and that thecancellation of the trip inMarch had been a blow: “Itwas concerning because ofall the hard work and all ofthe rehearsals, being earlyto setup the percussionsand getting ready to go.We put in a lot of hard.”Hahn said the Zoompractices will continue. The South Florida YouthSymphony Orchestra alsocanceled their season finale concert.
