HISTORYRoncalli High School, a co-educational high school, has a long, rich and proud heritage ofCatholic education. Its tradition of service to Indianapolis’ south side extends back more than90 years with the founding of Sacred Heart High School which, in 1966, was renamed John F.Kennedy Memorial High School.Bishop Chartrand High School was opened in 1962 to serve the growing needs of thesuburban south, and soon a vigorous rivalry was born between the two schools.In 1969 the facilities of these two schools were merged and a new institution was created toprovide the very best in educational opportunities. The new school was named (by the students)Roncalli High School in memory of Angelo Roncalli, who is more widely known as Saint JohnXXIII.Roncalli High School is a four year inter-parochial high school operated by the RoncalliHigh School Board of Directors under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese ofIndianapolis. Roncalli High School is accredited by the Indiana State Department of Educationand the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Our school is located in aresidential, suburban community of Marion County (in Indianapolis) and is approximately tenmiles from the center of downtown Indianapolis.The high school has been recognized three times as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellenceby the United States Department of Education. The service program earned the “Set A GoodExample Award” from the Concerned Businessmen’s Association while the Departmentof Education bestowed a Special Emphasis Award for the Service Learning program. The average class size is 23.7 students. The school day lasts 7.5 hours; moststudents attend seven classes, but have an option to enroll in eight. Roncalli offers 22 AdvancedPlacement courses and 15 Dual Credit courses.ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND DUAL CREDIT COURSESAdvanced Placement and Dual Credit Courses are not open enrollment at Roncalli, and everystudent enrolled in an Advanced Placement course must take the corresponding AdvancedPlacement exam.For the 2021-2022 school year, 267 students took an AP class(es) and 528 exams were given.These scores will be available in the fall of 2022.
