The schoolis proud to say that theyhave a high quality GreatStart Readiness Preschool Program in theirbuilding for four year olds.The program has a fourstar rating from The Michigan Department of Education, thanks to suchactivities as ScienceNight, Star Lab, live animal programs.The elementary schoolhas had a strong focus onreading and writing thisyear. They had severalbook give-a-ways, whichare always a hit with thestudents.During reading month,the students celebratedDr. Seuss’s birthday andinvited community members in to read. The Hamtramck Police Chief, AnneMoise, Hamtramck FireChief, Danny Hagen andHamtramck Mayor, KarenMajewski, as well asAllyson Martinek fromWNIC radio were just afew of the many peoplewho came to read to thestudents during March.Mrs. Stevens, the principal, made a commitmentto hear all of the elementary students read individually to her. This is herfourth year doing this.Each child added a link tothe reading chain in theoffice. She is proud tosay that she heard all willing participants. The reading chain is on display inthe office.Each student kept awriting journal and wasgiven interesting writingprompts. One of the favorite prompts asked students to write about theirvisit to The Detroit Institute of Arts. Theyhave had Jupiter Jaye visitthem several times thisyear. She is from HighTouch/HighTech Science.The students love it whenJaye visits. They alwaysgo home with a specialproject they have created.The elementary students love working in thecomputer lab. The schoolhas a program calledLexia which helps buildreading skills. Each student works at his or herown level. They can earncertificates for each levelthey pass.Finally, the school is bigon awards. Students andstaff are awarded weeklywith Star Awards. StarAwards are for academicand other achievements.They also have award assemblies after each quarter. We attribute our success to manythings, some of whichare the new programswe implemented or expanded, thanks to theintelligence, talents, anddedication of our students and staff. Thesenew programs includeSaturday School, Extending Hand of Service(ETHOS)communityservice program, College Ambition Program,Michigan Department ofEd African-American Student Initiative, YouthVoice, Positive BehaviorIntervention and Supports (PBIS), PrincipalParent Forums, andothers. In addition, wehad STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering,& Math) events whichwere made possiblethrough partnershipswith the U.S. Patent andTrademark Office, General Motors, and HenryFord Community College.This year we also expanded the scope of thepast programs, such asACCESS tutoring, SATPrep through PrincetonReview, science labsand projects, restorativepractice circles, newSchoolImprovementTeam committees, fieldtrips for extended learning, and importantly,dual enrollment coursesat colleges to includeCollege Arabic. The ticketto this wonderful celebration is a Passport toLearning.Parents are led by theirchild through the schoolwhere they participate,as a family, in differenteducational activities.Each station focuses ona different country or region of the world. Theactivities for each stationrepresent that country’sacademic contribution tothe world.The Dickinson Westand Kosciuszko MiddleSchool Campus had arenovation to the cafeteria and bathrooms duringthe summer of 2016.The parents were treatedto a tour of the new cafe-teria and were able tohave supper with theirchild.Spring ConcertThe Dickinson Westfamily had an evening offine arts with the annualSpring Concert. DirectorSpayde and the studentsof Dickinson West presented an array of songsdating back to the1960’s and representednumerous countries. Theparents were treated to aspecial night of entertainment. The parents andstudents were all smilesduring the concert.This beautiful night ofCorey Pittsentertainment is a treasured tradition for Dickinson West ElementarySchool.District Goals for 2016-2017The 2016-2017 schoolyear has been the busiestyet for the HamtramckPublic Schools’ SpecialServices Department. Wehave had staff from Dickinson East ElementarySchool present at prominent conferences withinthe county and state sharing her expertise on bestpractices for teachingmath and English Language Arts concepts. OurSchool Psychologists andPathologistsSpeechworked hard to educateparents and staff aboutthe various disabilities andtheir functions of students,throughout various districtmeetings. Additionally, ourSocial Workers have assisted with the ongoingdistrictwide implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention andSupports) and MTSS(Multi-Tiered Support System) at all HPS schools.Our department has reallyShalika Robiehelped to enhance the program offerings at all buildings and we are alwaysworking to increase thecontinuum of services offered for Hamtramck Public Schools’ students withdisabilities. The SpecialServices Department isfull of teachers, paraprofessionals and supportstaff that work hard tomaintain a level of care,compassion, and servicesthat are unforgettable forthe students and familiesof Hamtramck PublicSchools and it is our mission to improve and enhance with every passingyear!Our department’s highlights for this year focusedon our students with disabilities being able to experienceincreasedacademic success withmore project based learning such as partnering withthe Michigan Departmentof Career Developmentand Rehabilitation Services (MRS) to conductCafé’ Friday’s at Hamtramck High School; andhaving a student inductedinto the Honor’s Society atHamtramck High School.Overall, the Special Services Department continues to reflect and adjusthow we can continue tobest service the studentsand families of HamtramckPublic Schools for our students to be the finest theycan be and beyond!School district’s financialpicture is in stable shapeAs the end of the2016/2017 school yearapproaches, HamtramckPublic Schools has a greatdeal to be proud of. Wehave a district fund balance of 26.62%, which farexceeds the 10% adoptedby the Board of Educationon May 12, 2016. As projected by our CFO SherryLynem, our general fundrevenues have exceededour expenses this budgetyear. Sources attributed tothe increase in revenuesinclude: additional 2.44million due to increasedstudent enrollment; approximately 886,529from the passing of theWayne County Enhancement Millage has been received to date; and ourTitle funding produced anadditional 866,346.Nevertheless, along withadditional revenues cameadditional expenses: increased staffing – two newadministrator positions(district EL Director and Assistant Principal at Dickinson East) and twoSherry Lynemadditionalcustodians;added one additional busfor in-district bussing; absorbed Title funding shortcomings when Holbrookemerged from PrioritySchool status; added 100,000 to maintenancebudget for general repairs;and added 160,000 tothe technology budget.We were able to makeconsiderable facility improvements due largely inpart to sinking fund andcafeteria fund dollars. Thispast year we expended 1,816,570 sinking fundmillage dollars to replacethe roof at Dickinson East,remodel the bathroomsandwalkwaysatKosciuszko, install surveillance cameras throughoutthe district, and replacethe boilers at Holbrookand Kosciuszko. A total of 940,228 cafeteria funddollars were spent fullyrenovating the cafeteria atKosciuszko, including stateof the art kitchen equipment. Our structural improvements are far fromover, we have additional facilityimprovementsplanned for the 2017/2018 school year and beyond.We appreciate the support of our community andwill continue to be fiscallyresponsible stewards ofthe funds we receive. Wewill keep the residents ofHamtramck informed aswe reinvent and revitalizeHamtramck Public Schoolsfor the students, staff, andparents of our district.

Friday, June 9, 2017Hamtramck ReviewHolbrook Elementary School –Year in Review 2016-2017Holbrook has had aneventful school year.Below is my team’s takeon the 2016-2017 schoolyear. This year was productive; however, I’m looking forward to even moreproductive work for theupcoming school year.Grades Kindergarten –2ndMrs. Ashcraft, Ms.Ahad, and Mrs. LameratoK-2 students went on afield trip to the VeteransMemorial Park to clean upfor Earth Day on April 21,2017. The students experienced the joy of givingback to others.On March 28, 2017 theNational Honor Societymembers from the highschool came to Holbrookto read to all the studentsfor March is ReadingMonth. The memberswent to each class andread to all the students.Holbrook students lovedhaving them come.Firefighters came toHolbrook to read to thestudents for March isReading Month. After theFirefighters read to thestudents, the studentswere able to explore thefire truck. It was an exciting day for all of us.To finish off the year, wewent to the Detroit Zoo onMay 24, 2017. In June wealso have two more fieldtrips: Detroit Institute ofArts and KensingtonMetro Park.Grades 3 – 5Mrs. O’Dell, Mr. Schneider, and Ms. ClementeThird graders enjoyedfield trips to Lansing,Belle Isle and the ArabAmerican Museum. Students worked hard inDaily 6 activities andshowed what they knowon the NWEA tests.Fourth graders workedhard to build a classroomcommunity. We learnedto respect and supportone another in our continued learning. We also enjoyedourlearningopportunities outside theclassroom at the DIA,Gleaners, Schoolcraft College, the Henry Ford Museum and the Belle IsleReferralsSuspensionsHighest InfractionHighest Suspension MonthAquarium.Fifth graders learned together, made mistakes together, improved together,and achieved together!We also were able to havegreat out-of-classroom experiences at the DIA,Schoolcraft College, Hamtramck Tiny Farms, andthe Henry Ford Museum.Onward to 6th grade!Grades 6 - 8This year flew by at Holbrook in the 6th-8thgrades.We started the year witha virtual field trip to theDetroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). We were fortunate that patrons of theorchestra could join us inMr. Millerour auditorium for thefield trip.
