VFD MicroprocessorStandard in all 15 - 450 HP Variable Frequency Drive Air CompressorsSullivan-Palatek has the highest standard in air compressor control with our microprocessor on all VariableFrequency Drive (VFD) compressed air packages. The Microprocessor has a customer friendly displaywith expanded descriptions of all the operating controls. It has RS485 communication between it and theVFD and displays all pertinent VFD power consumption data on the microprocessors screen. It is the mostcomprehensive compressor control indicator on the market. The microprocessor will control your specific compressed air needs as the system requires, and willconserve your power when the compressed air need is reduced.MicroprocessorPressure schedule: program your daily operating schedule, and allows shut off during factory shutdown up to 28 different times per week.Built in sequencer: will trim up to 8 VFD or NON-VFD machines with microprocessor controls.Dedicated pressure display always shown.Configurable auxiliary display:Multiple display choices: compressor status differential pressure drive fault drivetemperature motor current motor speed percent capacity power used run or loadedhours service times remaining compressor operating temperature.Target pressure: Easily programmed to suit plant requirements. It can beprogrammed in:Proportional integral control at desired pressure allows» Englishtighter control of pressure without the need for add on» Frenchline pressure flow controller devices.» SpanishRS485 communication between the microprocessorand main VFD. Today’s controllers are much more powerful and versatile than prior models. The Microprocessor is thebrains behind our VFD compressors – which allows you to program your daily operation schedule andshut off during factory shutdown up to 28 different times per week! The built in sequencer will control up to eight VFD or NON-VFD compressors with the VFD compressoras the trim machine! And you can configure the display with any one of twenty operational readings while still showing the always-visible dedicated pressure display!Main Motor VFDYaskawa A1000 Drive is factoryprogrammed and ready to run. Sequencer Operation Principles:Practical Operation:The VFD compressor serves as the “Lead” machine. Itruns at the speed needed to supply the necessary airpressure, and calls on the other “Lag” compressorsto run when required. If there is more than one Lag,the Lead will determine which one is next up, and howmany are needed to supply the right amount of air tothe plant. The Lead should be close to the same sizeor larger than the Lags so they don’t suddenly overpressure the system. Normally the VFD maintainstight pressure control unless the air demand is lowenough to reach the unload pressure. In this caseit will maintain the pressure midway between theload and unload pressures. It attempts to maintainthis, but will speed up or slow down to maintain thismidpoint pressure, while adding or taking off Lags toThe specific operating pressure needed to allowcorrect plant operation needs to be determined. TheVFD Lead should be set up so the needed pressureis midway between the load and unload settings. The Lags should have their modulation regulator setso there is minimal modulation. The whole systemwill operate as efficiently as a VFD will, and thus itshould not modulate until it is at this pressure tounload pressure. The VFD Lead will do a good jobof maintaining the needed pressure, and therefore,it does not need to be set higher than needed. TheLead has PI0 control functions in it which will help tostabilize the control in changing conditions. The Lead’spressure schedule can also be used to totally shutdown the system at certain times of the day or week,or to reduce the system pressure for those timesof the day when less air (CFM) is needed for normaloperation.maintain the desired pressure range.MOTOR STARTING METHODS AND IN-RUSH CURRENT800700% IN-RUSH CURRENT6005004003002001000TIMEDirect In-LineSave MoneyWye-DeltaSolid StateVFDPlease note from the graph above that the VFD will not draw the in-rush current that other starters will require. This means that starting the VFD compressor will not incur the penalty payments charged by power companiesfor momentary spikes in current draw associated with other starting methods.

Ease of MaintenanceOpen VFD compressors are easy tomaintain, but so are those with theoptional enclosure. Large servicepanels on all sides make it easy toservice any part of the equipment.SP20-125, 125 hp VFD shown withoutoptional enclosure.

Operating Efficiency; VFD vs. Std CompressorsThis Power Consumption Efficiency Curve Chart shows howthe Variable Frequency Drive operates more efficientlythan other controls in providing air delivery. The VFD helpsreduce energy bills. Operating at 70% capacity, the VFDconsumes 25% less power than a standard compressor. The Variable Frequency Drive has a soft start featurethat maintains a low starting current. This reducesthe stress on the site power supply and also reducesmotor wear. The VFD system complies with the electromagnetic compatibility standard and is UL listed. TheVFD system is not limited to a fixed number of startsper hour.LOAD/UNLOADVariable Frequency120110VFD100LOAD/UNLOADIntake ModulationCOMPRESSORINTAKE M90OD.80ENERGYSAVED7060504030VFD20109596979899100 101102 103 104 105106 107 108 109 110AIR PRESSURE WHERE 100 CONTROL PRESSUREOPERATING COST SAVINGS OVER TIME5One Shift 5 day/wkFluctuating Demand& LeaksOne Shift 5 day/wkFluctuatingDemandOne Shift5 day/wkConstant AirDemand @80% Max.4YEARSPOWER CONSUMPTION - % OF FULL LOADPOWER CONSUMPTION24 hour/dayLow NightShift(@ 40%)3210102030405060708090100PERCENT COMPARATIVE COST SAVINGSThe Cost Savings Chart illustrates the reduced operating cost of a VFD Unit by correcting poor airusage: Five day/week operation, erratic demand fluctuations (28% of installations), steady weekendconsumption with leaks (64% of installations). This shows 24 hour operation with low night shiftand high day shift consumption at more than 40% savings after 5 years. In many instances the VFDCompressor will have a payback of the additional cost within 2 1/2 to 3 years.
