Sea Cadets Impress on Opening DayBy LCDR Matt Thompson, USNSCCPhoto by ENS Linda Conti USNSCCOn 7 May, 13 cadets and two officers from theNaval Station Everett Division of the UnitedStates Naval Sea Cadet Corps boarded the 62foot S/V Circe to join in celebrating “OpeningDay” of boating season for Seattle. Circe datesfrom the 1930s and was fully restored over atwenty year period leading up to re-launch in1992. She served for more than ten years as atraining vessel for University of Washington Navy (NROTC) and continues to support the Navywith orientation and training for Naval Sea Cadets and Sea Scouts. Circe is also available forcharters. Col Stan Keck, USMC, Retired, nowowns the Circe, and also served as crew in 1964.Col Keck was generous enough to invite us alongfor a great day of motor cruising through theMontlake Cut into Lake Washington. Sea cadetsjoined with NROTC midshipman in “manningthe rails” as the Circe passed in review in front ofthe Seattle Yacht club official who awarded firstprize in her class, no doubt due to the impressivesight of all those Navy service dress whites liningthe rail. A very fun part of the day was when thefish and chips boat pulled up alongside and cadets and midshipman bought their lunches! Thiswas a great event we hope to repeat every year.NL Member Runs for hisSons in the MilitaryArticle & photo by Jim ArdissonoI ran my 5th Rock & Roll Half-Marathon. It is always very touching when running along the westside of Lake Washington. The course is lined withveterans and veterans’ families proudly holding ourAmerican flag. Some may be in wheelchairs, oncrutches or missing other limbs. They are all cheering runners on to the finish. You get a huge lump inyour throat and your eyes water from all the encouragement from them. You actually work a littleharder and run a little faster seeing them and hearing them . . thinking about their sacrifices. Theshirt I wore had the Marine Corps and Navy emblems with the names of my sons in the service:Peter and Stuart. I run the marathon for them.4 VOYAGER September 2016
