Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look atmisery? Destruction and violence are before me; there isstrife, and clamorous discord.” How true this lament still is inour world today! Every day we hear of ideas or witness actions that attack the sanctity of life and the dignity of the human person, whether it be new laws which diminish the unborn, gun violence in our schools and neighborhoods, orhateful rhetoric and discord. These are all attacks on thedignity and value of every person that God has created. From the time we were first formed in our mother’s wombuntil the time we take our final breath, each “season” of ourlives is God’s gift. As evidenced by the four seasons here inMichigan, each season is not the same. Each one bringschallenges and trials, but each season also brings us newopportunities to increase our faith and believe in Christ OurHope. Hope is willing to trust. Hope always confidently looksforward! The Church teaches us that “the one who has hope livesdifferently” (Spe salvi 2). Christian hope can lift us in timesof discouragement and guide us in reaffirming our commitment to protect all human life. Hope reassures us that theLord is present with us every step of the way!I thank those parishes, schools, and institutions throughoutour diocese who participate in the Respect Life programduring this month and who make respect life efforts a priority throughout the year. Building a culture of life is an indispensable part of our calling as Christians.Sincerely yours in Christ,Most Reverend David J. WalkowiakBishop of Grand Rapids

We believe that when God's peoplefast with a broken, repentant and contrite spirit, ourheavenly Father will hear from heaven and heal ourlives, our churches, our communities, our nation, andour world. It is a peaceful and educational presence. Thosewho are called to stand witness during this 24-hour-a-day presence send a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It alsoserves as a call to repentance for those who work atthe abortion center and those who patronize it.SSPP parishioners will gather on Tuesday, October 15 at varying times from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on thepublic sidewalk in front of the abortion clinic locatedat 320 E. In 2002 PopeJohn Paul II added a new set of five reflections calledthe Luminous Mysteries which encourage additionalmeditations on the life of Jesus. The rosary is an invitation to experience the graceof Mary’s spiritual motherhood as she leads us to herSon, Jesus. For this reason, it has been an invaluablesource of countless spiritual graces for the saints. Remember, every time you pray the rosary you are given the privilege and honor of pronouncing the holyname of Jesus more than 50 times. The wealth of spiritual graces offered through therosary comes not from the multiplication of prayers(see Matthew 6:7) but from the imitation of Christthrough obedience to the Father’s will, according tothe example of the Blessed Mother.Maybe October would be a good month to turn offthe radio or podcast as you commute to work orschool and pray the rosary instead. See what gracesthe Lord wants to pour into your life from the rose garden of this daily meditation.

Our Parish Purpose Statement - Saints Peter & Paul ParishOur Pastoral Council has been working intensely with Father Tom to develop aPastoral Plan for our parish. Parish Pastoral Planning is a prayerful and participativeprocess through which a parish characterizes itself as a particular community of faithby developing its own purpose statement, assessing its strengths and resources, aswell as its limitations and needs. All of this leads to making recommendations to thepastor concerning establishment of priorities and goals, and devising ways toaccomplish its mission. Parish Pastoral Planning helps to answer the questions:Who are we as a parish? What are we called to do? How are we best going to do it?All of us are called to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. Themission of the Church is rooted in the mission of Christ who commanded everyone clergy, religious, and laity - to "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel toevery creature." (Mark 16:15). From its earliest days the Church has responded tothis mission in various ways depending upon the times and circumstances.Creating this statement of our parish’s purpose was a great challenge. The councilcould have simply quoted the parish purpose from the great commission of Matthew28: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name ofthe Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that Ihave commanded you.” Jesus’ commission rings loud, yet there is great need in theworld for the Catholic faithful to be moved to a renewed zest for the gospel, bothpersonally and in sharing it with others. By establishing a purpose statement for ourparish, the council hopes to eliminate any question as to our parish’s sacred purpose, and to ensure that the work of the parish, in all its forms, is directed toward thispurpose. Our parish purpose statement:Our sacred purpose as Saints Peter and Paul Parish is to . . .use our God-given gifts . . .Every parishioner is called upon to exercise the divinely-inspired calling andgifts conferred in Baptism for a particular function in carrying out the mission ofJesus Christ.to awaken faith, inspire discipleship, and trust in God’s plan . . .Being a member of Saints Peter & Paul Parish is not only aimed at one’spersonal sanctity. We are called to bring Christ out into the world, whereverour journey takes us, to affect the sanctity of all people. Each of us is to exudeour Catholic faith as to rouse faith in others, to be an example of Christiandiscipleship, and to exemplify trust in God’s divine plan in all things.so that all who enter our doors may receive, believe, and share God’s love.Whether one “enters our doors” by simply coming into contact with a parishmember, or physically passes through the doors of our church building, ourpurpose is the same: To stir the hearts of people, through the power of theHoly Spirit, to become open to receive all the Lord unconditionally offers toevery person, to attain certainty in the Gospel message, and to share in God’slove by embracing his love personally and becoming a vessel in bringing hislove to others.RECEIVE. BELIEVE. SHARE.STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGNCAMPAIGN PRAYERHeavenly Father, we thank you for always beingpresent to us in the Church which you gave as the meansfor our salvation and that of the whole world. A Churchthrough which life-giving and sustaining graces arepoured into and over us by the holy Sacraments. AChurch which is truly your “body” here on earth. We aremembers of that body, filled with the Holy Spirit andbountiful graces, and compelled to use the blessings, gifts, and favors which have been given us to build upthat body.Renew us with your grace and the gifts of the HolySpirit that we may give serious thought to how each of uscan better use our time, talent, and treasure to build upyour Church and to love better our brothers and sisterswho make up your holy Church.May the Parish of SS. Peter and Paul continue to be acommunity of believers who are willing to spend timelearning about God’s Word and will, about the words andworks of Holy men and women who have lovedJesus and his Church, and may we then serve one anotherand our fellow human beings, in showingthem God and his Holy Church. This we pray, dear Father, through ourLord Jesus Christ, who lives and reignswith you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, oneGod for ever and ever. Amen. The Stewardship Campaign Prayer was written bya Saints Peter and Paul Parishioner.
