ABOUT ST. XAVIER .Learning about the Bombers .2018 ScheduleIN NEED OF A W: The 2018 Bombers find themselves in asituation similar to the 2016 season – with a 4-4 recordentering the annual showdown vs. Saint Ignatius. The Bombers won fivestraight playoff games to win the state title.8/24 vs. Lakota WestPaul Brown StadiumW, 34-08/31vs. ColerainBallaban FieldL, 12-14FAMILIAR FACE: The head coach of the Bombers and thehead coach of the Wildcats know each other well. CoachSteve Specht and Coach Chuck Kyle are good friends andlegendary competitors on the field. Since 2004, whenSpecht took over as St. Xavier’s coach, the Bombers have a9-6 record vs. Saint Ignatius.9/7vs. Walnut HillsBallaban FieldW, 41-79/14vs. Cathedral (IN)University ofIndianapolisL, 14-20OT9/21vs. MoellerBallaban FieldL, 14-19SPREAD IT OUT: St. Xavier employs a spread offense, lining up universally in shotgun with 4-5 wide receivers. TheBombers’ offense can balance the run and pass well, usingrun-pass options, jet sweeps, and zone reads to keepdefenses guessing.THE GUNSLINGER: Quarterback Wyatt Hudepohl leads theSt. Xavier offense. The 6’3, 197-pound signalcaller has 1,397yards, 13 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions through the airand 113 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Hudepohlhas a strong arm and is capable of finding running room onquarterback draws and RPO’s.PLAYMAKERS TO WATCH: St. Xavier has dangerous optionson offense. Chief among them is Jared Kreimer. The 6’0,177-pound playmaker can line up at wideout or quarterback, often runs jet sweeps, and serves as the punter. He leads theteam with 31 receptions for 486 yards and 4 touchdowns.Chris Payne is the squad’s top rusher (367 rushing yards, 5TDs). Tight end Marshall Lang (294 yards and 2 TDs) andwideout Liam Clifford (193 yards, 4 TDs) are others to watch.DEFENSIVE SCHEMING: Much like the Bombers utilize a 3-3stack on defense. The approach makes it difficult for opponents, as the QB can’t read the defense until after the playstarts. The Bombers like to blitz and play man-free coverage. As a team, the Bombers have 3 defensive TDs this season.9/28 @ElderThe PitL, 26-5110/5W, 42-7vs. La SalleNippert Stadium10/12 vs. ClarksonFootball NorthBallaban FieldW, 38-1910/20 vs. Saint IgnatiusBallaban Field2 p.m.10/26 vs. Louisville St.XavierBallaban Field7 p.m.DEFENDERS TO WATCH: St. Xavier’s linebackers are thebackbone of the defense, as Nathan Arthur and ThomasKiessling lead the defense in tackles. Tucker Hundley is abeast in the secondary, with 2 interceptions and 27 solotackles. Keep an eye on DBs Trevor Potts and B.J. Ferguson.SPECIAL BATTLE: The Bombers have strong special teams.Kreimer is a rugby-style punter who has successfully fakedpunts this year. Kicker Joe Sullivan has only notched onefield goal but is a perfect 15-of-15 on extra points.42018 Saint Ignatius Football Game Notes
