Third Grade Word StudyThis spelling approach is referred to as “Word Study”, which is basedon 30 years of research that has explored the developmental stages of wordknowledge in children and adults (Henderson, 1990). This research hasidentified certain spelling errors that tend to occur in clusters and showstudents’ common confusions when learning new spelling patters. This is a hands-on method, in which children sort specific words basedupon similar spelling principles and learn to make spelling generalizations.Students get many opportunities to manipulate and practice their words in avariety of ways. For this reason, this approach seems to work better than thetraditional “drill, practice, test” method. Students seem to retain the spelling ofthese words in a more effective manner. The purpose of Word Study is as follows: “To examine words in order to reveal consistencies within our writtenlanguage system and to help students master recognition, spelling, andmeanings of specific words.” (Words Their Way, 2008). This is not a one-size fits all program that starts and ends in the sameplace for all students. The critical piece of this program is that itdifferentiates instruction for different levels of word knowledge.I have created 29 weeks worth of 3rd grade spelling lists for three differentlevels of learners. The students level is determined by an initial spellinginventory. In addition to the 12 pattern words each week, there are 5additional high frequency words. You can use the entire packet or just elements of it however you wouldlike, but the way that I use it is as follows:On Monday I bring students to the carpet and do a quick mini lesson aboutthe current week’s spelling pattern. I then put the spelling list on the overhead.Students copy their group’s words into their spelling notebook (this notebookremains at school and is used for in class word work such as word hunts.)Students do the word sorts either by cutting and gluing the words or by writingthem in the space provided. For the word sort I have students sort all of thewords, not just their own. The reason I do this is so students see that oncethey know a pattern they can apply it to any word within that pattern. I alsowant my lower groups to be exposed to higher-level vocabulary, even if theywon’t be tested on how to spell those words.I hope you find success in word study and that this packet is helpful toyou and your students. Please contact me with suggestions or alternativeways you’ve used the materials! Thank you and happy teaching!
