President’s MessagePassing of the GavelReflections andAppreciationAs I write this first article asyour new president, I feelBeing president these pasttwo years has enriched my life in extremely honored to be chosenfor this position. I reflect aboutseveral ways. First, after 100Friday night services, 48 rabbi-led how B’nai Israel has come to meanso much to my family and me. ItBoard meeting drashes, and 100started when my girlfriend, Wendy (to whom I havelunches with the rabbi, I feel smarter about Jewishnow been married for 40 years), talked to Helenritual, customs, and teachings. Second, I feel moreMerritt (of blessed memory), who figured out howconnected to B’nai Israel, because I know so manyto have me attend High Holiday services in the fall ofmore members than I did when I started. Third, I1978 for free. I continue to support ourfeel more committed to B’nai Israel, having beeninspired by our members’ willingness to give of their congregation’s vital policy of turning no one awayfrom our synagogue because of cost!! I was atime, talent, and resources, and impressed by thesubstitute teacher at the time. By the way, I am oncequality and talent of our clergy and senior staff. Finally, being a lifelong learner, I am appreciative of again a substitute teacher after spending 37 years asthe chance to hone my own leadership skills. Thank a teacher, an assistant principal, and (for 25 years) amiddle school principal.you for the opportunity to serve. I hope I have contributed to strengthening the temple so that we willSince that time in 1978, we have been welcomedbe around for another 170 years.into this wonderful family at the temple. All three ofmy children – Eric, Brian, and Marissa – had their bar/Bina Lefkovitz, Past President (2017 - 2019)bat mitzvahs here and traveled to Israel with theirConfirmation classes. We have had many years ofwonderful involvement at B’nai Israel.I have served on the Board of Trustees for thepast six years and have had the pleasure of workingwith the past three incredible presidents – BinaLefkovitz, Alan Steinberg, and Barbara Allen-Brecher.Together they, with incredible support from all ofour members, have done a wonderful job of helpingus build a pretty solid financial foundation. Thesecurity of our congregational home has been a toppriority for the past several years, and even moreso now. I will also work hard at supporting theincredible work we do here. Simply put, “Love thyneighbor as thyself,” which is prominently displayedon the outside of our building. And, of course, thatwork includes tikkun olam – repairing ourcommunity, our country, and the world. I think wehave the most superb staff anywhere. Mycommitment is to support them 100%. I am very fortunate to be a member here as well as your incomingpresident.Pictured (left to right): JoAnn Solov, Bina Lefkovitz, MartySolov, and Terri Gaines. Women of B’nai IsraelFROM THE WOMEN OF B’NAI ISRAEL PRESIDENTEve PanushCircle of GivingWomen of B’nai Israel was one of the charter (first) members of the Women of ReformJudaism (WRJ), which is the North American organization of sisterhoods and women’sgroups, and we continue to lead the way! We recently served as one of the pilotsisterhoods for WRJ’s newest program of Tzedakah Collectives, which is a group of women who pool theirdonations and decide together where to allocate their money. It combines women’s philanthropy, Jewishlearning, and sisterhood.Lindie Henderson facilitated our Tzedakah Collective pilot program. The response was amazing. More than 20women agreed on a commitment of 100 per member. Over the course of five meetings, a mission and visionstatement was created: “To learn, share and collaborate in order to provide funds to an organization(s) that is a501(c)(3), with a desire for an outcome that would help affect the ability of the recipient(s) to fulfill a specificneed.” Members of our Collective then proposed several possible organizations as recipients of the donation. Todetermine the selection, a form was developed for proposers to complete and an evaluation scorecard wascreated (thank you, Jen Zoffel). After an extensive process, the following programs were selected: 916 Ink (www.916ink.org), a Sacramento-based creative writing group providing workshops for studentsin grades 3-12 to increase literacy, writing, vocabulary, communications, and social skills in many venuesand formats. Hope’s Closet, which offers shoes, backpacks, socks, school supplies, and much more to needy studentsin the Sacramento Unified School District. Our members donated a total of 2,160 and presented a check in the amount of 1,000 to each program. Wehope to continue offering women in our congregation this program as an opportunity to come together, tobecome more informed about organizations, local or otherwise, and to offer our services. The Tzedakah Collective is just one of the ways Women of B’nai Israel is making an impact. There are a varietyof other programs that benefit both our congregation and the community. It’s all part of the circle of giving. Our fiscal year starts on July 1. Israel CommitteeIsraeli Elections and Changing Jewish IdentitiesBy Dan Rabovsky, Israel Committee Co-chairJust a few days before the Israeli elections in April, I attended a presentation on “Jewish Identities inIsrael: Confrontations, Crises, and Novel Conceptions,” given by Tomer Persico, Koret Visiting AssistantProfessor of Jewish and Israel Studies at UC Berkeley. Prof. Persico teaches at Tel Aviv University and is aFellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute. He spoke of how old stereotypes, such as “secular left” and“religious right,” have broken down. The recent failure of Prime Minister Netanyahu to form a rulingcoalition of the right-wing parties illustrates Prof. Persico’s point. (Another election is scheduled forSeptember 17.) Netanyahu was unable to broker an agreement between Avigdor Lieberman’s YisraelBeiteinu party (of mostly secular former Soviet Jews) and the two religious parties regarding military serviceof yeshiva students. Prof. Persico also noted a recent cover story in the most popular Israeliultra-Orthodox magazine, highlighting the role of ultra-Orthodox women in the operation of the IronDome missile defenses. Such an article would have been hard to imagine not that long ago.Save the Date: Sunday, December 8 – Presentation on Religious Pluralism in Israel: The CBI IsraelCommittee will cosponsor a TICVA event on Sunday, December 8, at 1:00 pm at Congregation BethShalom. Yael has been part of the Israeli Jewish Renaissance for the last20 years and is a co-founder of Havaya, which facilitates alternative Jewish life ceremonies.World Zionist Congress 2020 Election: This election is a critical opportunity for Reform Jews to haveour voices heard. The outcome of this election could help implement Reform Jewish values and provideessential support, representation, and funding for our movement in Israel. The election will take placefrom January 21 to March 11, 2020. It’s crucial – and simple – for every Reform Jew to vote. Contact theCBI office or the Israel Committee about becoming a Congregational Captain, and watch for moreinformation about the election.Participate in Planning a CBI Study Tour of Israel and Visit to Holon: Are you interested in visitingIsrael on an organized study tour with Rabbi Alfi and fellow congregants? CBI Bulletin BoardDown & Derby 2019 – Everyone’s a Winner!By Richard Deutsch, Down & Derby Committee ChairThis year’s Down & Derby was a fun evening of sweet wine, delicious morsels, and games of chance. On Saturday, May 4, nearly 200 members gathered and raised about 35,000 for our congregation’seducational programs. Driving the beat of the evening was drummer Todd Morgan and his Emblems, whose rock-a-billy style was impossible to resist. Snapping fingers and swinging dancers kept the nightlively. The star of the night was auctioneer David Sobon, who led the prize-laden silent auction tables andthe lively voice auction. All night the gaming tables were busy as rainbow stacks of chips were risked. Araffle drawing awarded an instant wine cellar, and Rabbi Alfi bested everyone in a game of “Heads orTails” to win a diamond ring! As the juleps flowed, the evening’s guests strolled from table to abundantlyfilled table, compliments of Magpie Café, Aharona Catering, Selland’s Market-Café, Riverside Grill, andBella Bru. The action-packed evening flew by.This year’s Fund-a-Need benefits improvements to the outdoor playground. Nearly everyonecontributed to raise just over 18,000! The proceeds will go toward improving the playgroundequipment, resurfacing the games blacktop, and funding youth education scholarships. Many thanks to everyone who made a donation, contributed an auction item, or attended! I wish tothank my energetic Down & Derby Committee: Michael Aran, Jonathan Groveman, Greg Hubbs, EileenJacobowitz, Jenna Morgan Lang, Amelia Lorenzo, Patricia Porter, Maryann Rabovsky, and Alex andJoanne Swedlow.
