INTERFAITH BRONX GROUP EXTENDS WELCOME TO REFUGEESTwo Afghan refugee families have recently moved to the Riverdale/Yonkers area, sponsored by TheNorthwest Bronx Coalition for Refugees (NWBCR), an interfaith group of seven houses of worship(including the Bayit), community centers, and individual humanitarian activists. The group was formed bythe Westchester Jewish Coalition for Immigration (WJCI).Both families’ identities are kept anonymous for their and their families’ safety. The first, acollege-educated young couple, former Afghan government and international NGO employees, fleddeath threats and fought through the chaos at Bagram Airport in the havoc surrounding the Americandeparture. They are excited to settle in Riverdale, spending their first yearin NYC in a high-rise apartment, sublet to them by one of thegroup’s members. The second family is larger, withfive young children and two devotedparents. After spending months inlimbo, they arrived here in April andhave been settled in a comfortableapartment in South Yonkers, embraced by a nurturing Muslimcommunity there. As we welcome these two Afghanfamilies in our communities, we lookforward to hosting anticipatedrefugees from Ukraine in the nearfuture as well!Rav Ezra, representing HIR, accepts a donation frommembers of DKE fraternity at Manhattan College7
