Volume 19, Number 1A Kistler Family AlbumSpring 2008by Donna PayneKistler family. Thirty years ago, those words applied to the children and grandchildrenof Betty and Wayne. Those words still apply to the Kistlers. It’s the meaning of the wordfamily that has changed.Kistler family has grown to include literally thousands of children, their parents, siblings, grandparents and caregivers that have benefited from the birth of theKistler Center in 1978.After struggling to find appropriate rehabilitative care for Greg when he suffereda brain injury after he was hit by a car at 6, Betty and Wayne Kistler knew what layahead a decade later when their granddaughter, Michelle, was born with spina bifida. In the ‘60’s, Greg and his parents had to travel out of state to receive treatment. This time, the Kistlers decided, the treatment would come to Michelle.Betty and Wayne, along with Michelle’s mother, Jennifer, took on the task – and thesystem that said it couldn’t be done - of bringing to Fort Smith the premier pediatricrehabilitative center in the region. It opened in a single room at Sparks Hospital with one therapist using four piecesof equipment to treat their six patients that first year. Fast forward 30 years and youhave nearly 600 children benefiting from a staff of 26 while receiving treatment in a12,000-square-foot facility holding rehabilitative equipment valued over 300,000.The Center also serves as a clinical site for physical, occupational and speechlanguage therapy for more than 12 colleges and universities. The photos presentedin this newsletter are just a glimpse into our family photo album. We begin wherethe Center began - with Gregory and Michelle.Cover photos from top to bottom: Gregory Kistler in 1957, 1960, and 1977. Gregory neverreceived services at the Center named in his honor. He died the year after it opened. MichelleKistler in 1974, 1979, and 2003. Michelle was the first patient treated at the Center. She servedas a volunteer for many years before her death in 2003.continued on page 2
