I.IntroductionThe Student Handbook is a source of information on the University of Mississippi MedicalCenter’s School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences (SGSHS), and related to policies,procedures, available resources and issues that are of concern to the student academic life. Itacts as a companion to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Bulletin.This SGSHS Student Handbook is reviewed each year and an electronic copy is available toall students via the UMMC SGSHS website. Students are responsible for using the StudentHandbook as a resource when questions arise, and as a guide to academic/non-academicpolicies and procedures. These policies are subject to change during the academic year. Anysuch changes will be distributed to all students. HistoryThe School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences at the University of MississippiMedical Center in Jackson was established in 2001 by the Board of Trustees of StateInstitutions of Higher Learning (IHL). 2.3.4.5.(d) Maternal Fetal Medicine Track (only fellows accepted into the Maternal FetalMedicine residency program)Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)A student who completes a MS degree should be able to: Demonstrate mastery of a body of knowledge in the discipline above that of abaccalaureate degree; Apply and understand the basic methodologies of the discipline; Retrieve, evaluate, and utilize information relevant to the discipline; Communicate, both orally and in writing, in a manner and level of proficiencythat is standard for the discipline; Conduct research or produce creative work (for thesis MS); Apply the professional practices in the discipline (for non-thesis MS).Course WorkA minimum of 30 credit hours and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 (ona 4.0 point scale) or higher, or a 75% weighted numerical average, are required forcompletion of the degree.Time LimitThe time limit for completing all requirements for a MS degree is six years from thedate of first registration.Thesis or Capstone Project Requirementsa. Thesis Advisory Committee(a) The thesis advisory committee is prepared under the direction of the programdirector and must be approved by the Dean of the SGSHS through theNomination of Advisory Committee (Master of Science) form. Thecommittee must consist of a minimum of three individuals. Committeemembers must be full or associate members of the SGSHS Graduate Faculty.The chair of the committee and one other member must be from the student’smajor program area. One member can be from outside the University ofMississippi Medical Center.b. Thesis/ Capstone Project Defense(a) ThesisThe Maternal Fetal Medicine track within the MS of Clinical Investigationrequires successful completion of an oral examination and thesis defense forgraduation. The candidate’s advisory committee will conduct theexamination, and the thesis should show evidence of original investigation.Students should complete and submit a signed Thesis Defense form to theSGSHS Office of the Dean.(b) Capstone ProjectThe Population Outcomes, Human Translational, and Clinical Trials tracksrequire successful completion of a capstone project. The project may be agrant proposal, published manuscript, approved clinical, etc. Specific detailsregarding a student’s capstone project can be obtained from the graduateprogram director. Following completion of the project and approval by theSchool of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences 2021-2022 Student Handbook8

advisory committee, students should complete and submit a Capstone ProjectApproval form to the SGSHS Office of the Dean.6. Program Completion ApplicationThe Program Completion application and the Cap and Gown order form must becompleted through Workday at the beginning of the semester in which the studentexpects to graduate and as outlined on the SGSHS academic calendar. Theapplication must be approved by the SGSHS Academic Dean.7. Exit SurveyAll students must complete an anonymous online exit survey prior to graduation. Thecollated results will be used to assess program effectiveness. Students will be sent alink to complete the online survey.B. Doctor of Philosophy1. Programsa. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)A student who completes a Doctor of Philosophy degree should: Demonstrate broad and advanced knowledge within the discipline; Utilize a range of methodologies for the discipline; Independently perform original research; Communicate effectively; Function as a professional in the discipline.3. Required Course Worka. A Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond abaccalaureate degree, or 30 credit hours beyond a Master of Science degreewithin the same field, and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a4.0 point scale), or an 80% weighted numerical average.b. All students, with the exception of students enrolled in PhD in Nursing, mustsatisfactorily complete Responsible Conduct in Research (ID 709) andProfessional Skills (ID 714). PhD in Nursing students may take Ethics inResearch (ID 700), and are exempt from enrolling in Professional Skills.c. The program-specific curriculum and suggested plans of study can be found in theUMMC Bulletin and/or obtained from the program director.School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences 2021-2022 Student Handbook9

4. Time LimitThe time limit for completing all requirements for a doctor of philosophy degree isfive years from admission to candidacy.5. Qualifying Examination and Admission to Doctoral CandidacyAll students must successfully pass a qualifying examination to be admitted intocandidacy for the doctor of philosophy degree. The qualifying examination is given tograduate students in good academic standing upon completion of coursework and asoutlined in the suggested plan of study. The composition of the examination (oral,written, comprehensive, or research based) varies by program, and information on theformat may be obtained from the relevant program director. Following successfulcompletion of the qualifying exam, the student is required to submit the QualifyingExam Approval form to the SGSHS Office of the Dean. Two weeks after satisfactorycompletion of the qualifying examination, the student must submit an Application forAdmission to Candidacy to the SGSHS Office of the Dean.6. Dissertationa. Dissertation Advisory CommitteeThe dissertation advisory committee is prepared under the direction of theprogram director and must be approved by the Dean of the SGSHS through theNomination of Advisory Committee form. The PhD Advisory Committee willconsist of a minimum of five members. Four of the members must be members ofthe Graduate Faculty. Three of the members must be from the student’s majorprogram and at least one from outside the major program. In addition to the fourGraduate Faculty members mentioned above, the fifth committee member can befrom inside or outside of UMMC. If the fifth member is not a member of theGraduate Faculty, a CV must be attached to this document. These members willneed to be approved by the Dean of the Graduate School. The Nomination ofAdvisory Committee form should be submitted to the SGSHS Office of the Deanwithin six weeks of admission to doctoral candidacy. All students are required tomeet with their advisory committee twice per academic year in order to provideprogression updates and to allow for early intervention of any problems that mayarise.b. Dissertation ProposalAll students must present a proposed dissertation topic to their committee withinone year of admission into doctoral candidacy. Upon approval of the committee,the student is required to submit the Dissertation Proposal Approval form to theSGSHS.c. Written Dissertation(a) The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires successfully completion of awritten dissertation. The dissertation is prepared under the direction of thestudent’s advisor and must be approved by the candidate’s advisorycommittee and the Dean of the SGSHS. The dissertation must showoriginality of thought, and demonstrate the results of independentinvestigation. It should contribute to the advancement of knowledge, exhibitSchool of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences 2021-2022 Student Handbook10

mastery of the subject literature, and be written with an acceptable degree ofliterary skill.(b) The written dissertation may be prepared in either a traditional or a manuscriptstyle format. Guidelines for preparation of the written dissertation may befound on the SGSHS website.(c) Ten business days before the student’s oral defense, the student must submit acopy of the written dissertation to each advisory committee member forreview. In addition, the student must submit a copy to the SGSHS Office ofthe Dean for formatting review.d. Oral Dissertation DefenseThe dissertation defense is conducted by the candidate’s advisory committee andconsists of a public presentation and oral defense. As stated in the Notice ofPublic Defense policy, the oral defense shall be publicly announced two weeksbefore the intended date. Five members of the advisory committee must bepresent at the final oral examination. A private deliberation by the advisorycommittee will determine the acceptability of the defense and dissertation. Furtherquestioning of the candidate may be included in the committee’s deliberations.Upon successful completion of the oral defense, all present members of theadvisory committee must the sign Dissertation Defense form. The signed formmust be submitted to the SGSHS Office of the Dean two days after the defense.7. Publication RequirementAll PhD students must be listed as the sole first author on at least one publication in anational or international peer-reviewed journal. Verification of the publicationrequirement requires submission of the signed Publication Requirement form to theSGSHS Office of the Dean.8. Program Completion ApplicationThe Program Completion application and the cap and gown order form must becompleted through Workday at the beginning of each semester in which the studentexpects to graduate and as outlined on the SGSHS academic calendar. Theapplication must be approved by the graduate program director and SGSHSAcademic Dean.9. Exit Surveysa. SGSHS Exit SurveyAll students must complete an anonymous online exit survey prior to graduation.The collated results will be used to assess program effectiveness. Students will besent a link to complete the online survey. A notification of completion will bemailed to the graduate upon completion.b. C. Post-baccalaureate Certificate1. BiochemistryThe graduate certificate program in Biochemistry is a distance education programaimed at working professionals or graduates whose professions are impacted by thefield of medical biochemistry with an understanding of medical biotechnology andunderlying genetic deficiencies of common metabolic disorders.a. Student Progression:Students are required to complete CMB 705 Biochemistry I: Molecular,Structural, and Cellular Function and CMB 706 Biochemistry II: Enzymology andCellular Metabolism. Students are also required to take one of the remaining twocomponents to fulfill the certificate program. Students who successfully complete11 credit hours will be able to demonstrate knowledge in the areas ofbiochemistry, enzymology, cellular metabolism, biotechnology, forensics, andgenetic deficiencies of human disease.b. Application for CertificateThe application for certificate must be completed through Workday at thebeginning of each semester in which the student expects to complete all certificaterequirements, and as outlined on the SGSHS academic calendar. The applicationmust be approved by the graduate program director and SGSHS Academic Dean.c. SGSHS Exit SurveyAll students must complete an anonymous online exit survey prior to the award ofcertification. The collated results will be used to assess program effectiveness.Students will be sent a link to complete the online survey. A notification ofcompletion will be mailed to the graduate upon completion.D. MD/ PhD ProgramThe MD/PhD Program is a seven-year program in which the student will complete threeyears of medical school (M1-M3), three years of graduate study (G1-G3), and a final yearof medicine (M4). The goal of the MD/PhD program is to train physician-scientists bypreparing them for careers in academic medicine. Graduates of the combined MD/PhDdegree program will have a broad understanding of contemporary medical knowledgeand an ability to productively investigate issues related to human disease.1. Admission Requirementsa. Admission to the School of Medicine at UMMC;b. A complete application to the SGSHS which includes submission of GRE scores;c. A personal statement indicating the reasons for choosing the MD/PhD program(see options on the School of Medicine’s Secondary Application);d. A list of relevant research experiences and presentations (under “Experiences” inhis/her American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application);e. A letter of recommendation from an individual capable of evaluating theapplicant’s research potential.All application materials should be sent to the Associate Dean for Medical SchoolAdmissions. MD/PhD applicants who are invited to interview with the MedicalSchool Admissions Committee will, at the completion of these interviews, also meetSchool of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences 2021-2022 Student Handbook13

V.with one or more members of the graduate school’s MD/PhD admissions committee.Prior to the interview with the SGSHS, the student must complete the GraduateSchool application for the PhD Program.2. Student Progressiona. Pre-M1 Summer: Once a student is accepted into the degree programs, he/she isexpected to enter at the start of the summer semester before entrance into theSchool of Medicine. Students will register for 1 credit hour of Research inBiomedical Sciences (ID 737), and will be required to select a minimum of threegraduate faculty in two different basic science departments for laboratoryrotations.b. M1 Year: Students will be expected to follow the SOM plan of study and arerequired to attend the departmental journal club and seminar series in the basicscience department of their interest.c. Pre-M2 Summer: Students will register for 1 credit hour of Research inBiomedical Sciences (ID 737), and are required to select one or two graduatefaculty for laboratory rotations.d. M2-M3 Years: Students will be expected to follow the SOM plan of study, andare required to attend the departmental journal club and seminar series in the basicscience department of their interest. In addition, students are expected to preparea NIH F30 application for submission. The student’s major advisor must beidentified no later than
