1General InformationThe University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is oneof the most innovative of the leading private researchuniversities in the country—and for undergraduates, it’sa university in perfect balance.Rochester offers the choices and intellectual excitementof a large research university with the intimacy andopportunities for personal involvement of a smallliberal arts college. More than 95 percent of classesare taught by faculty, not teaching assistants, and it’snot uncommon for senior faculty to teach introductorycourses. There’s no separation between researchingand teaching, between faculty’s own professionalexcellence and the excellence they bring to theclassroom.Rochester students live on a lively, self-containedcampus, just minutes from metropolitan Rochester—a dynamic city that offers a mix of commerce, culture, and history.Rochester balances its innovative spirit andresponsiveness to individual needs with a commitmentto the lasting values of a classic liberal arts education. The results of the Rochester experience are self-evidentin the track record of its alumni—in their careers andin their personal lives. “To put it simply,” says onestudent, “Rochester opens doors.”For many undergraduates, the Rochester experiencemeans surrounding a chosen major with clustersof related courses that contribute to a broad liberaleducation, or with a minor or two in areas distinctfrom the major. Others choose double majors or earncertificates in complementary fields. Still othersindividually design their own interdepartmentalprograms.Rochester students can also benefit from the offeringsof other schools and departments. For example, undergraduates can enroll in graduate courses, inclasses at the medical school or the business school ortake lessons at the Eastman School of Music; futureengineers can diversify their studies with an advancedcourse in Chaucer.Unique OpportunitiesThe University of Rochester offers a variety of uniqueinterdisciplinary academic opportunities for students. These include a tuition-free fifth year of study, musiclessons at one of the world’s best music conservatories, and dedicated research initiatives within the humanitiesand social sciences. The Rochester CurriculumStudents have the freedom to define their own academicpaths, driven by interest and curiosity. At Rochester, webelieve that excellence requires freedom.Bachelor of Arts Degree in EngineeringRecognizing the need for broadly educated decisionmakers who are well versed in engineering, thisprogram gives a student substantial technologicalknowledge and competence in at least two areas ofengineering while also providing the opportunity for aliberal arts education.e5 ProgramSelected undergraduates devote a tuition-free fifthyear to the study or practice of entrepreneurship:transforming an idea into an enterprise that generatesvalue.Grand Challenges Scholars ProgramScholars design a personalized program that exploresa selected challenge through five program areas, including hands-on projects, interdisciplinaryexperiences, entrepreneurial or innovation endeavors, global dimensions, and service learning.Lessons at EastmanAny Rochester student can take private instrumental orvocal lessons at Eastman for academic credit (a basicaudition to determine placement is required after youenroll).Meliora Humanities SeminarsThrough funding, students can take advantage ofexperiences relevant to humanistic inquiry, such aslanguage acquisition, internships, or study abroadprograms.Senior Scholars ProgramSelected undergraduates devote at least half of theirentire senior year to a creative project, whether in the

The program frees these students todevelop their intellects broadly before they launch intotheir medical studies.Academic LifeThere are approximately 6,100 full-time undergraduatesincluding 500 or so at the Eastman School and 3,400full-time graduate students at the University. Thegreat majority of classes are small in size, enablingall students to work closely with their teachers. Thereis a single faculty for all students; some of the mostdistinguished senior professors teach beginning courses.Reflecting the personal scale of Rochester’s programs, undergraduates are encouraged to work where possiblewith individual faculty members in the pursuit oforiginal scholarship.College students must make two major transitionsin their first two years. In their first year, they makethe important leap from high school to college. Assophomores, they choose their major. The College’sdean of first-year students takes special responsibilityfor those two important years in students’ careers at theUniversity.Faculty and staff advisors also offer support, startingwith an orientation program on campus before thebeginning of first year. They are also available tosupply advice on course and major requirements; tohelp students find paying internships and employmentopportunities; and to assist in the development of postcollege plans.Students can’t expect to gain a “Rochester education”simply by studying and attending class. Out-of-classactivities—whether they’re intramural sports, politicalclubs, community service, or movies and concerts—area major part of undergraduate life. The CollegeAdministrative OfficerJeffrey Runner, PhD (University ofMassachusetts) Dean of the College in Arts, Sciences &EngineeringAbout the CollegeThe College is the undergraduate division of Arts,Sciences & Engineering.
