Local Community Centers Benefit Muncie Residents Of All AgesA. February 11, 2019 Reprinted from the Muncie Journal/Muncie Star Press Photo & story by Mike RhodesMuncie, IN—Muncie is fortunate to have several community centers that benefit residents of allages. These unique facilities provide a safe haven for kids and deliver life-changing programs andservices to local residents.Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens CenterThe Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center is located at 2517 W. 8th Street in Muncie. The center is located in the former Forest Park elementary school. Judy Elton is executive directorof the center. Elton says that 500-700 people typically attend the center every week. “In additionto our daily programming, we have a very community-oriented church (Dialogue Church) thatrents our facility every Sunday,” she said. “We have 3 different unions that hold their meetingshere. We host a flea market here once a month and host a few large rummage sales herethroughout the year.” Elton feels the Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center is a greatresource for the local Forest Park neighborhood. By holding a number of free events throughoutthe year, such as dinners, ice-cream socials and holiday gatherings, the center can “connect” withForest Park neighborhood residents in meaningful ways. The center’s services and programming are vast and include: Yoga, line dancing, strength training, technology training, euchre, bible study, free legal services, loaner medical equipment andmuch more.Elton says “Bingo” is a huge draw for people. “We have about 15 Bingo games a month sponsored by local businesses,” she said. “People get more excited about Bingo, than just about anything else we do.” In addition, the thrift store is open M-F from 10am to 2pm. On the 2nd Saturday of every month, the thrift store is open from 9am to 2pm and everything is 50% off.Elton said most months the Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center brings speakers in totalk about health topics, food and cooking with local chefs on all kinds of topics, local information, all sorts of history topics, the arts, and more. The center shows anywhere from 2-5 movies a month, too. “We are looking for people who could share their own expertise and teach aone-time class on topics ranging from collecting WWII memorabilia, to basket weaving, to repurposing items into art, to the art of pie-making, etc.,” she said. If you are interested in volunteeringto speak or teach a class, or if you’d like to receive a newsletter that includes all activities ofthe Muncie-Delaware County Senior Citizens Center you may contact Judy Elton at 765-2890844. WORDS OF WISDOMA mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmerand his wife opening a package. “What food might this contain”,pondered the mouse. He was devastated to discover it was amouse trap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimedthe warning. “There is a mousetrap in the house ! There is amouse trap in the house !”The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr.Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.” The mouse turnedto the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house !” Thepig sympathized but said, “I am so very sorry Mr. Mouse. But,there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured that youare in my prayers.”The mouse turned to the cow, “Oh please, dear lady, please hearmy cry ! There is a mouse trap in the house! Did you hearme .There is a mouse trap in the house !!!”My good gracious, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it is no skinoff my nose! For you see, you are soooo little .and I .I’m soooimportantly big .there is little concern for your problems!”So the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, toface the farmer’s mouse trap alone. That very night a sound washeard throughout the house like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught inthe mouse trap. In the darkness she did not see that it was a venomous snake who tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the16 Muncie Delaware County Senior Citizen Center

Hospital and she returned home with a fever. Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup,so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’smain ingredient. But his wife’s illness continued, so friend and neighbors came tosit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well. The poorfarmer’s wife died. So many people came for her funeral thefarmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for allof them.So .the next time you hear that someone is facing a problemand think that it doesn’t concern you, remember that when oneof us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in thisjourney we call life. We must keep an eye out for one anotherand be willing to make that extra effort to encourage one another. We must help one another.17 Muncie Delaware County Senior Citizen Center
