3Introduction to the Montessori Materials ListsThe three materials lists that follow are offered for reference purposes. The first list is forthe Toddler level of Montessori (16 months – 3 years). The second list is a special list for a levelthat may be used by some schools called Emerging. The third list is for the Early Childhood level ofMontessori. The fourth list is for the Lower Elementary (6-9) level of Montessori and the final list isfor the Upper Elementary (9-12) level of Montessori. Most of the lists show Montessori Materials only. They generally do not include mostconsumables such as crayons, paper, glue, foods, soap, etc. These consumables need to be orderedseparately. They also generally do not include furniture. It is on a separate furniture list. The materials lists are organized into columns. The first column, titled Name, listscommon or usual names of the material. Since names are sometimes or often different from courseto course or company to company, these are an attempt at a generic name. The second column, titled Vendor, is to indicate a supplier from which the material isavailable. The Montessori program requires quality material. There are many Montessorisuppliers, and this list references several of them. We have made it our business to reviewmaterials from many vendors and recommend superior materials. Be very careful if you varyfrom the recommended materials. The third column, titled Number, is the order number of the item from whichever supplierwe recommended. Please check all order numbers since the companies change many of them, orwe may have made a typographical error. The remaining columns are generally titled, First Year per Classroom and Second Yearper Classroom. These represent the minimum quantities of those materials required forinstructional purposes. In that column the entry optional means that it is entirely up to the schoolwhether or not to acquire that item. The entry suggested is a bit stronger. It means that it isrecommended to get although not essential. A numeral such as 1 or 2 means do get that number ofthat item. All Montessori classrooms should generally begin with all materials fully available. However, due to financial constraints, this may not be possible. For this financial reason only, I have Michael Dorer November 2016

4prioritized materials into those absolutely necessary in the first year, placed in the First Year perClassroom column and those materials that could be deferred until the second year, placed in theSecond Year per Classroom column. Some areas, such as Early Childhood Practical Life andSensorial, cannot be prioritized in that way; almost all materials must be present to open the class. Please note the footnotes, since there are many comments that may explain and be relevantin the process of selecting materials. When ordering materials, be sure to check the order numbers and the current prices, theyoften change. Be sure to order very early to guarantee delivery. Please call me at 651-353-2109 ore-mail at mjdorer@gmail.com with any comments or questions.Michael Dorer Michael Dorer November 2016

12EmergingEmerging Materials and ActivitiesThe usual Toddler age range in most Montessori Centers is limited by state regulationto 16 or 18 months to 30 or 36 months. In many programs, when children reach 30 to36 months they are moved to a Children’s House (Early Childhood) classroom. In otherlocations children only enter Children’s House if they are three years of age by aspecific date, such as September 15.However, in certain schools, the range is extended to older children with special needs, making the class not just a Toddler class but a Toddler plus environment, calledEmerging.Neither AMS, AMI, PAMS, nor MEPI recognizes the Emerging level, so there are noofficial lists of what to add to the Toddler class to serve the needs of the older childrenin that environment. It is important in adding material not to add anything labeledspecifically for over three because of choking hazard, since that could be dangerous tothe young toddlers.I suggest some basic simple additional materials mostly from Sensorial and PracticalLife areas. These might include a Brown Stair, Binomial Cube, etc. The teachers in theEmerging level will choose other materials based upon the needs of the older childrenthat they are serving.I have listed no numbers per classroom since all of these materials are essentiallyoptional. Allocation of materials will depend upon the ages of the older children (ifany) and their developmental levels.NameVendorNumberTable Washing ActivityMontessori ServicesPL15Large Tongs ActivitiesMontessori ServicesPL38Traditional Sweeping Set (Brush & BlueDustpan)Montessori ServicesQ16Polish Box w/Liner - BlueMontessori ServicesP42BPolish BoxMontessori ServicesP44Liner - Polish Box - BlueMontessori ServicesP46BPolish/Dust Cloths - dz - BlueMontessori ServicesPC12BSetting a Table ActivityMontessori ServicesPL62Peeling a Carrot ActivityMontessori ServicesPL48Mini-Vegetable BrushMontessori ServicesW30Wooden Beads & Laces - 108Montessori ServicesMA103 Michael Dorer November 2016

These are the noun, article, adjective, conjunction, preposition, and verb. They are usually not named at this level.
