Since thatsummer, the Foundation has raised more than 2.3 million to fund programs and initiatives thatenrich and extend academic opportunities forall students, professional development for teachers, and technology and equipment for classrooms, helping B-CC to continue to be one ofthe finest, most diverse high schools in the nation. Over the course of twenty years, the Foundation has brought many “firsts” to B-CC:* An open-access International Baccalaureate program, the first in Montgomery County.Students do not need to be tested or meet anyentrance requirement to be enrolled in the program, and can choose to be either a full diplomaor a certificate candidate. The B-CC programhas served over 4,500 diploma and certificatestudents since its start in 1996. Other countyhigh schools have since followed B-CC’s leadand established their own open IB programs.* Summer Academy, a three-week summerprogram for at-risk incoming 9th graders andand a one-week summer program for at-risk rising 10th graders to be better prepared for thechallenges at B-CC and beyond. The program has served more than 722 studentssince its start in the summer of 1999.* CollegeTracks, a college-access program offered during lunch and after schoolfor students most at risk of not going tocollege, as well as on-campus help forCollegeTracks graduates. Since its start atB-CC with 1,500 seed money from theFoundation, the program has served morethan 1,311 B-CC students, 99% of whomhave been admitted to a college or technical school. The success of the program hasNo. of StudentsOctober 2015led to its expansion to Wheaton High School in2006 and to Watkins Mill High School in 2015.* TAP, Time for Academic Progress, an after-school academic support program staffed byB-CC teachers for all B-CC students. Started inthe fall of 2003, the program is now a mainstayof academic support programs at B-CC. Students in all grades and all levels—from on-levelclasses to the most advanced classes—makemore than 1,000 visits to TAP every year.* A Cyber Cafe, the first at a high school in2003, offering students access to computers before and after school.* A technology-based Language Lab, thefirst in Montgomery County in 2004, for teaching foreign languages and for teaching Englishto students from other countries.* New faculty initiatives, such as College Essays Writing Workshop, Jornalism & MediaLiteracy Workshop, and Girls LeadershipWorkshop, to meet student needs. 3FY2015 Foundation-Funded ProjectsAt the start of FY2015, with help from teachers and staff,the Foundation launched its Campaign for Academic Excellence, a continuum of year-round integrated academicsupport programs that promote high academic standards andsuccess for all students at B-CC High School. The Campaigncomprises a mix of the Foundation’s traditional programswith some exciting new initiatives to help students after school,at lunch, during class time, as well as in the summer:Summer ProgramsSummer Academy – a three-week summer program forat-risk incoming 9th graders and a one-week summer program for at-risk rising 10th graders. In FY2015, fifty-threeincoming 9th graders and thirty-one rising 10th graders participated in the program.College Essay Workshop – a new initiative by B-CC’sEnglish teachers for rising seniors to spend one week in thesummer learning how to create an essay. The Foundationfunded two sessions of the workshop in the summer of2014 for a total of 59 students, and 95% of them finishedtheir session with polished essays.Girls Leadership Workshop – a one-week summer program on leadership skills building and empowerment activities for 10th-12th grade girls who have been identified ashaving potential leadership qualities. In FY2015, 14 girls participated in the workshop.Skills for Success – Foundation funds allowed two B-CCstaff to spend time in the summer to create and develop aschool-year program to build better study skills and improveacademic performance of underperforming students.where all B-CC students are invited to submit poetry, shortstories, personal essays, and short plays to be judged by professional writers affiliated with the Writer’s Center in Bethesda.B-CC Community Scholarship Fund – provides fundsfor college-bound B-CC students facing financial hardshipand who would otherwise not be able to attend college.BRAG/Mentoring – a follow-up support program forSummer Academy participants and other at-risk students.Girls’ Youth Leadership Group – a Counseling Department program targeting 9th to 11th grade African-Americanand Hispanic girls from the lower SES neighborhood community. Funding is for weekly lunch meetings, college visits,and attendance at the Youth Leadership Summit.IB Program – annual subsciptions to the Questia periodical/textbook web-accessible database and the IB ManageBACsystem. Questia is used by IB diploma candidates and certificate candidates in IB History, Psycholgy and Anthropology,both as a database and as an organizer for research papers.The ManageBAC system allows IB students to more easilytrack their CAS hours, a required component of the IB Diploma program.Minority Scholars Program – an enrichment programdedicated to improving the overall achievement of AfricanAmerican and Latino students at B-CC. Funding was for twocollege tours, and attendence at the annual MCPS MSP Student Retreat.PARCC/English HSA Lunch Bunch – weekly lunchbunch groups to help prepare all 10th graders, with specialfocus on the 150 at-risk students, for the new state PARCCEnglish exam, and to help the 80 to 90 at-risk 11th gradestudents who have not passed the English HSA.Professional Development – grants to teachers and staff* For more details on these and other Foundation-funded projects,please go to Funded Projects at www.bccedfoundation.org.2015 A NNUAL REPORT
