Over the years, we have forgedstrong bonds with our customers throughmutual respect and exceeding theirexpectations.In 2005, we reached a significant milestone inour history by building our new facility inWildwood and expanding our operations toserve the South East portion of MarionCounty in a more productive manner.As we continue our growth into the 21stCentury we do so with the knowledge andappreciation of our employees.PURPOSE OF THE EMPLOYEE HANDBOOKThe purpose of the Employee Handbook is tohelp you get better acquainted with Mie ScottPlumbing. You should become familiar withthe contents of the handbook since itprovides you with information regardingemployment,Mike Scott Plumbing reserves the right toamend, add or change the policies, protocols,procedures, and/or employee benefits listedor offered in the handbook. If you have anyquestions about the handbook, please contactyour supervisor. The handbook is designedso that as policies and benefits plans changeor new ones are implemented, additionalpages will be distributed to you.NATURE OF EMPLOYMENTThe employee handbook provides guidelinesto be followed and is not an employercontract, and none of the policies described inthis manual should be constructed as beingpart of an employment contract.Since employment at Mike Scott Plumbing isbased on mutual consent, both the employerand the employee have the right to terminatethe employment relationship at will with orwithout cause, at any time.OPEN DOOR POLICYIt is the philosophy of Mike Scott Plumbing toprovide open communication as an avenue bywhich employees can pursue answers to theirquestions regarding their employment andbenefits. However,should the problem continue to exist, you areencouraged to communicate your concerns tothe next level of management. Pleaseremember, communicate your problems tothe appropriate supervisor. Mike ScottPlumbing can’t help you find a solution if wedon’t know about it.POLICY AGAINST HARASSMENT,DISCRIMINATION, RETALIATIONMike Scott Plumbing is committed toproviding a work environment that is free ofall forms of unlawful harassment anddiscrimination. In keeping with thiscommitment we maintain a strict policyprohibiting all forms of unlawful harassmentand discrimination in the workplace,including sexual harassment.Unwelcome sexual advances, request forsexual favors, and other verbal, physical, orvisual conduct of a sexual or harassing natureconstitute unlawful harassment if: Submission to such conduct ismade an explicit or implicit termor condition of employmentSubmission to or rejection of suchconduct is used as the basis foremployment decisions affectingan individualSuch conduct has the purpose oreffect of either unreasonablyinterfering with an individual’swork performance or creating anintimidation, hostile, or offensiveworking environmentExamples of such conduct with violate thispolicy include, but are not limited to: Offensive or unwelcome sexualflirtations, advances, orpropositionsVerbal abuse of a sexual natureGraphic or verbal commentariesabout an individual’s bodySexually degrading words used todescribe an individualSexually oriented jokes oroffensive literatureUnwelcome physical touching ofotherMike Scott Plumbing will not tolerate sexualharassment of any other form of harassmentor discrimination based on sex, race, color,religion, national origin, age, marital status,veteran status, handicap, or disability.Harassment or discrimination in theworkplace by any employee will result indisciplinary action up to and includingtermination.PROCEDURE: if you experience, observe, orbecome aware of behavior that you believe tobe harassing or discriminatory in nature,which is inappropriate or offensive, or whichmakes you or other uncomfortable, you havean obligation to report the behaviorimmediately to your supervisor. Providingconfidential information of this type willenable Mike Scott Plumbing to takeappropriate actions to ensure that employeesenjoy a work environment free fromharassment. of any individual who violates this policy. Inaddition, any individual who engages inconduct contrary to this policy may bepersonally liable in legal action broughtagainst him or her.You will be protected from retaliation formaking a report or participating in aninvestigation under this policy. Any personthat retaliated against any individual whoseeks a review under this policy will beconsidered a violation of this policy and willresult in serious corrective action up to andincluding termination.VIOLENCE IN THE WORKPLACEMike Scott Plumbing is committed toproviding a safe and healthy workenvironment for employees, customers, andvisitors. As a result, violence in the workplacewill not be toleratedMike Scott Plumbing has a zero tolerance forviolence. If you display any violence in theworkplace or threaten violence in theworkplace, you will be subject to disciplinaryaction up to and including termination.Talking of violence or joking about violencewill not be toleratedYou are encouraged to confidentially reportany potential or actual violent incidentimmediately to your supervisor and or theHuman Resources Department.DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICYMike Scott Plumbing recognizes itsresponsibility in providing a safe andproductive work environment for allemployees. Mike Scott Plumbing has aparticular concern about substance abuse,since it can affect an employee’s productivityand efficiency, jeopardize the safety of otherand impair thereputation of our organization. For thesereasons, we have developed this policy todeal with those whose drug or alcohol useaffects the rest of us.The possession, consumption, purchase, orsale of alcohol or an illegal drug on thepremises of Mike Scott Plumbing isprohibited. Furthermore, no employee shallbe under the influence of alcohol or an illegaldrug while on Mike Scott Plumbing premises,while operating equipment, or whileperforming business off Mike Scott Plumbingpremises. An “illegal drug” is a drug orcontrolled substance which is (1) not legallyobtainable or (2) legally obtainable, but notobtained or used in a lawful manner.A blood test, analysis or other drug/alcoholscreening will be required of all applicants ofany employee where there is reason tobelieve that he or she may be using drugs, ormay be under the influence of drugs oralcohol. Reason to believe, includes, andinjury, or accident at work where there isreason to believe that employee is found tohave breached these policies but has beenpermitted to remain employed.An employee’s cooperation with such a drugor alcohol screening test is required as acondition of employment. The employee’srefusal to cooperate with a request for testingand to provide a specimen may result intermination. Where there is reason to believethat the employee has violated this policy andthe employee’s refusal to cooperate hasprevented a medical determination of his orher condition may result in termination. Anyviolation if this policy may result inimmediate termination. problem with regard to alcohol or drug use,and who demonstrate a commitment to takethe necessary remedial action, may be eligiblefor medical leave of absence for such purposeand will not be subjected to disciplinaryaction for taking such leave.STANDARDS OF CONDUCTEmployees in any organization are expectedto observe certain standards of jobperformance and acceptable conduct. WhileMike Scott Plumbing cannot list everypossible area of unacceptable conduct, setforth below are examples of conduct whichwould not be acceptable in the workenvironment and in the case of grossmisconduct, may result in immediatetermination on the first offense: Job Performance Below average work quality orquantityExcessive absenteeism or tardinessGross MisconductInsubordinationFailure to follow safety policy orproceduresDishonestyRudeness or lack of cooperation withemployees, customers, or vendorsTheft of company property or thepersonal property of othersFalsifying or altering Mike ScottPlumbing records includingemployment application, time sheets,or medical documentsAltercations, fighting, threatening, orintimidating othersViolation of Mike Scott Plumbing’spolicy against discriminating andharassment Retaliating against any employee whomakes a complaint or participates inan investigation relating to Mike ScottPlumbing policy againstdiscrimination and harassmentViolation of the policy againstviolence in workplaceBeing under the influence of, using,possessing, or selling alcohol or illegalcontrolled substance on Mike ScottPlumbing property or whileconducting business for Mike ScottPlumbing.Gambling on Mike Scott Plumbingproperty or while conducting MikeScott Plumbing businessSleeping during work hoursPossessing a firearm or otherdangerous weapons on Mike ScottPlumbing property or whileconducting Mike Scott PlumbingbusinessBeing convicted of a crime thatindicates unfitness for the job orraises a threat of the safety or wellbeing of Mike Scott PlumbingemployeesDisclosing company confidential orproprietary information tounauthorized personsNot following the documents policiesof the company such as Mike ScottPlumbing operating instructions orproceduresThe listing of possible means of unacceptableconduct does not allow the “at will” nature ofemployment.
