Specifically designed for capturingPD pulses, Rotor Flux changes, Endwinding Vibrationsand Shaft Voltages, they send all signals to the dataacquisition system for interpretation.”PDSensorsEndwindingVibration SensorsEpoxy Mica Capacitors (EMC) and Stator SlotCouplers (SSC) are high frequency sensorsused to detect Partial Discharges (PD)occurring within stator windings of motors andgenerators. The number of installed PD sensorsmay vary on machine type and size and varyfrom 3 to 24 sensors per machine.The Endwinding Vibration sensors are nonmetallic fiber optic accelerometers used tomeasure vibration of the generator statorendwindings. The sensors are able tosimultaneously measure vibration in the radialand tangential directions safely in high voltageand magnetic fields found in air-cooled as wellas hydrogen cooled generators.Rotor FluxSensorsShaft Voltage andCurrent BrushesThe Rotor Flux sensor detects shorted rotorwindings in generators and synchronousmotors by measuring air gap magnetic flux. Itsenses the magnetic field emanated from eachrotor pole to determine the presence of shortedrotor turns.Existing grounding brush(es) are equipped withshunt(s) to measure current on the motor orgenerator shaft. Additional voltage brushesmight be installed to detect high shaft voltage.The monitor detects high voltage and currenton the motor or generator from poor shaftgrounding. Shaft voltage monitoring will alsoprovide additional benefits like identifying thequality of asset repairs or maintenance ongrounding brushes.The Guard II monitor takes signals from these sensors and createspatterns of asset activity for the asset’s condition analysis.7
