TwentyTwenty--fourth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSeptember 11, 2016A Message From Your PastorMy Dear Parishioners,Next Sunday we celebrate one of themost beloved and popular yearly events - our11th annual St. Bede Parish Picnic! ThePicnic Committee, led by chairperson CasIlenda, has worked hard to give this year'spicnic a little different flair by adding aRev. MonsignorJohn C. MarineKaraoke Contest, a live rock and roll Fiftiesband, and a "Super Bubble" performer. Ofcourse, as usual, there will be strolling magicians, the PhilliePhanatic, bingo game, kiddie rides, football tent, and on andon, for one price. While we call it a parish picnic, everyone, including extended family members and neighbors, are very welcome. Eachyear my own family looks forward to this great event as well. The 10,000 giveaway raffle is one of the main ways weinclude so much at our picnic, and keep the entrance fee at anaffordable amount. At the time of the writing of this column wehave sold only 200 tickets, and have 200 more to go. Pleasehelp.I'd like to take this time to thank all of you who have made agift to the 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal. Your support willprovide for nearly 180 ministries and programs, helping everything from youth initiatives to care for the elderly, from homelessness to growing the Church on college campuses. For those who have not yet contributed to the Appeal, I askthat you prayerfully consider showing your support. Takingcare of those in need is one of the most important things we cando as Catholics, and it is important that together as a Catholiccommunity, we all take part in the Catholic Charities Appeal. To date our parish has raised 75,256 towards our goal of 87,652. In case you no longer have the mailing for this Appealand still wish to make a contribution, additional envelopes areavailable on the desk in the main vestibule of the church. Withyour help we will reach our goal and do our parish's part tomake the entire Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia a continual beacon of hope for the needy in our area.Scripture ReadingsTwenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSeptember 18, 2016Amos 8: 4-7Psalm 1131 Timothy 2: 1-8Luke 16: 1-13 or 16: 10-13What an indictment in the first reading of those who arewealthy and use that wealth to take advantage of the poor! But then along comes Jesus, who points out that wealth canbe used for good ends as well. Jesus says that we cannotpretend that we don’t live in the world with others, so weneed to find ways to advance the reign of God using the toolsat our disposal. Perhaps the question is how we can do sowithout giving in to the attractions of material things.Adoration ChapelAltar Candle DedicationSept. 12-18Special Intentions for Hedwig Gosciniak(Req. by Leon & Eileen Gosciniak)Weeks are still available for 2017!Just come into the Parish Office to reserve.Candle dedications are a 30 donation for the week.May God Bless You,Remember The DeceasedJane McGovernCorey OberholtzerWHAT’S NEWAT THE PARISH PICNIC THIS YEAR?“St. Bede’s Got Talent!”We are united in prayer with their families and with one another aswe and all the faithful departed await our rising with the Lord. This year there will be a Karaokecontest from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Our students have been visiting their prayer buddies andcompleting various activities with each other. It is so nice towitness this partnership between our younger students and ourolder students. At the end of the month, our school community will gatherin the gymnasium to pray together and honor our students whohad birthdays during the month of September. As you can see, whether it is our immediate family, our extended family, our parish family, our neighborhood family, orour SKD family, we know that family is so important. If you have any questions you can contact Mo or JudyConnelly at littlemo4@comcast.net or 215-579-6370.Dear Parishioners,Next week, September 18th is Catechetical Sunday for the entire nation. Why do we celebrate CatecheticalSunday? In 1935, the Vatican publishedOn the Better Care and Promotion ofMs. Carole ObroktaCatechetical Formation, a document thatasks every country in the world to acknowledge the importanceof the Church's teaching ministry and to honor those who servethe Catholic community as catechistsThe word "catechetical" is unfamiliar to most people. What does it mean? The word might be more familiar thanyou think. Catholics have used the word "catechism" for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium ofthe Church's teachings. The root word, "catechesis," is fromthe Greek word meaning "to echo, or resound." Catechesis isthe act of resounding or bringing the Church's teaching to theworld. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of theChurch. Why do we have a special day set aside to commissioncatechists? Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in theChurch. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear,"Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of theChurch's life . . . her inner growth and correspondence withGod's plan depend essentially on catechesis." (CCC #7). Thisministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profounddignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned bythe Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlightthis ministry and invite the entire church community to thinkabout our responsibility to share our faith with others. How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Catechetical Sunday? Parents are trulythe primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soiland plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, wenot only highlight the work of catechists in our parish andschool, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making theirCatholic households a place where the faith is passed on to thenext generation.Next Sunday, during the 11:00 a.m. Mass we will commission our Parish and Catholic School Catechists. During theweek, if you see a catechist - - - give them a special thank youfor their important role in our faith community. Let us keepeach other in prayer.Weekly Ways to Be MercifulDuring this ExtraordinaryYear of Mercy declared byPope Francis, you areinvited to take advantageof weekly suggestions onhow we can live out theCorporal and SpiritualWorks of Mercy. This Week’s Suggestion:33) When mercy for others is difficult, pray Cardinal Merrydel Val’s Litany of Humility:O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, hear me.From the desire of being esteemed, deliver me, O Jesus. From the desire of being loved,From the desire of being extolled,From the desire of being honored,From the desire of being praised,From the desire of being preferred to others,From the desire of being consulted,From the desire of being approved,From the fear of being humiliated, deliver me, O Jesus. From the fear of being despised,From the fear of suffering rebukes,From the fear of being calumniated,From the fear of being forgotten,From the fear of being ridiculed,From the fear of being wronged,From the fear of being suspected,That others may be loved more than I,O Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.That others may be esteemed more than I,That, in the opinion of the world, others may, increase and I may decrease,That others may be chosen and I set aside,That others may be praised and I unnoticed,That others may be preferred to me in everything,That others may become holier than I, provided that Imay become as holy as I should,O Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.Carole ObroktaDirector of Religious Education(Office: 215-357-2130)Part Time Evening Receptionist NeededWe are currently in need of a substitute for Fridays, who wouldassist as needed.
