SAINT PIUS VSAINT JOSEPHSAINT MARYSAINT MATHIASSAINT JOHN the BAPTIST26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEI received a postcard in the mailstating I had to write an article forthe Beacon and to have it in bySeptember 19. I had no clue whatthey were looking for. I thoughtabout recycling one of my oldbulletin articles or recycle one of myideas about three-legged stool spirituality. But themore Adrian Peterson was discussed, I thought Iwould throw my two cents in on the situation, whichended up to be a precursor to last Saturday’s homily. This is what I wrote for the Beacon:We are all fallen human beings prone to sin anderror. I have been saying that a lot lately. As a RomanCatholic priest, of course, I have had to play thediplomat with folks discussing the scandal of the daythat the news media brings up, whether it be the sinsof the recent past or the distant past that personnel inthe Church have committed. It is hard to be a spiritualleader, let alone a spiritual person when you hearpublic outcry. That being said, I have a lot of empathyfor the NFL in dealing with the situations of playerssuch as Adrian Peterson and Ray Rice. With regards to Peterson and Rice and the handlingof those situations, along with the Church scandals, sinhas occurred. These violators should suffer theconsequences of what the law metes out. But I havegrown to be concerned that the public outrage mightbe over the top, and as spiritual people have lost ourbalance. We have become reactionary to the scandal ofthe day with an air of moral superiority, forgetting thatwhile it is right to have a certain moral outrage and ahunger for justice when these situations, as people ofGod, we must hold in balance the ideals of charity,Cannon FallsMiesvilleNew TrierHamptonVermillionSEPTEMBER 28, 2014forgiveness, and mercy, qualities of the Lord which weare called to emulate. So often, Churches weigh in on faith and morals andget accused of being judgmental and hateful. But thecourt of public opinion does the same thing. The courtof public opinion has become judgmental andself-righteous, ready to cast stones at every individualwho gravely sins. Jesus said, “Let he who is withoutsin cast the first stone.” Again, we are all fallen humanbeings prone to sin and error.Fr. FROM FATHER STANOne of the great gifts I have gotten in lifeis the privilege of studying for a semesterin Jerusalem. We were there in the Fall of1990, a very dry year there. We stayed atTantur Ecumenical Institute which wasin largely open country about 4 milessouth of the walls of Jerusalem and aboutone and a half miles from downtown Bethlehem. The30-some acre campus had numerous olive trees andsome biblical educational sites, as well as the dorms, dining hall, chapel and library. It bordered the WestBank, at least what was considered that at the time. Asthe semester ended, the build-up for Desert Storm hadbegun for the first Gulf War, but we had a generallyvery peaceful time there. While we were there, they observed Yom Kippur, theDay of Atonement. It is a very solemn day. No Jewswork. There are no radio or television broadcasts. Novehicles, except a few emergency vehicles are allowedto run – no buses either. Tire-shredding devices arethrown across all the intersections so no one can travelexcept on foot. The people spend the day praying orotherwise contemplating their sins and askingforgiveness from God. It is an eerie experienceknowing you are surrounded by hundreds of thousandsof people, and hearing only the far-off sound of a dogbarking. And while only a small percentage of thepeople in Israel are devout, or even practicing Jews, they do observe this silence on this day. We Christiansreally don’t have anything to compare with it today, except for some places on Good Friday afternoon – buteven then we drive to services, and certainly theairwaves are full of noise. This year Yom Kippur is on Saturday, October 4. Thedate varies somewhat each year because the Jewishreligion uses a lunar calendar, and so some years have12 months, and some 13 months. As Catholics, we have a full week as well. Monday isthe feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel andRaphael (three of the seven Archangels), and Thursdayis the fest of the Guardian Angels. Saturday is the feastof St. Francis of Assisi, well known to almost everyone.Tuesday the 30th we recall St. Jerome, the greatbiblical scholar who translated the bible from Greekand Hebrew in the Latin, the common, or “vulgar”language of the day (around 400), providing us withthe Vulgate edition of the bible. He did this whileworking in a cave in Bethlehem, adjacent to the cave ofJesus’ birth. Wednesday, October 1 is the memorial of3St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, also known as St.Theresa of Liseaux or the Little Flower. A Carmelitenun, she died on September 30, 1897 while still 24 yearsold, but has had a great influence on spiritual life. Sheis the co-patroness of France, patron saint of missions, and one of only 33 doctors of the Church. Four of hersisters also become nuns, the last one dying in 1959.Her parents, Louis and Zeile Martin, were beatified in2008, the 150th anniversary of their marriage. This past week several staff members attended a SafeEnvironment Training Day. Among the thingsdiscussed was a new draft of a Code of Conduct thatemployees will be required to sign. There have beensuch codes for employees and volunteers for quite sometime, but this document is more inclusive, and includessome things not specifically mentioned before. Muchof it is common sense, but there are some things thatwill be debated quite vigorously, such as size of giftsthat can be accepted, signed waivers when doingmarriage counseling, very strict statement about touch, etc. All have histories, all have valid responses. Wealso discussed various changes in reporting, thestructure of how accusations will be handled, therecommendations of the task force reviewing theprevious system, and the resultant new structurewithin the Archdiocese for oversight of all this. Newpossibilities for education of children regarding theirrights as children of God as to how they are to betreated were discussed. Children in Faith Formationand in Catholic Schools receive this as part of theircourse of study. Parents may opt out of it for theirchildren, but are then expected to present theinformation themselves. Employees and volunteers, who have been required to have background checksmade, attend training and sign codes of conduct willcontinue to do so, but background checks will need tobe renewed every few years, and there may be somerecertification of the Virtus training, most likely doneonline. We will continue to schedule the regularVirtus classes, in an updated form, for those who willbecome new volunteers in working with children.St. John the Baptist in Vermillion will hold itsParish Festival this weekend. We start with Massat 10:00, featuring our school students. The festivalbegins immediately afterward with all the great thingsyou have come to expect, and a few new surprises.
