All Arts All the TimeFine art, crafts, San Pedro has it allSan Pedro is known as Los Angeles’ arts district. In fact, its Waterfront Arts District was designated by California as one of thestate’s initial 14 cultural districts. And once you’re here, it’s easy to understand why.Block after block of the town is home to galleries and working artists’ studios. And they’ve made adaptive reuse of any numberof buildings, preserving the town’s character while transforming it from industrial to artistic. The Loft at 401 S. Mesa Street is anexample of how artists have transformedSan Pedro. The Loft is housed in a building that was once a laundry and later awarehouse. Nowadays, it is the workingspace for a wide range of artists in big studios with two galleries to show theirworks and those of guest artists.Another big spot for artists’ work is CRAFTED at the Portof Los Angeles. It opened 10 years ago in a space that wasformerly a warehouse for cargo coming into and out of theport.Today it hosts nearly 50 artists in stalls where they displaytheir works that range from painting and photography towoodwork. It is located in Warehouse 10 at 122 E. 22nd Street on theWaterfront and is open Fridays and Sundays Noon to 6 p.m.The biggest exhibitor at CRAFTED is the San Pedro ArtAssociation. And it’s really the pioneer of art in San Pedro, having been founded 85 years ago.Its area at CRAFTED has the works of 36 member artistson display and available for sale. These include art, illustration, and photography, clothing and apparel, ceramics andsculpture, home décor and accessories, stationery and papergoods, and toys and games. Steve Magee offers expert pictureframing on site and Debbie Sue Stinson offers personal shopper services for all art- and home-related items.4Pat Woolley is a noted acrylic and watercolor artist/illustratorwhose work is available at the San Pedro Art Association atCRAFTED gallerySan Pedro & Peninsula Visitor—Photo courtesy of the San Pedro Art AssociationAugust 2022

Every 1ThursdaystSan Pedro celebrates art in all its forms every month with its big First ThursdayArtWalk. The studios and galleries are open and invite in guests to see where art is made anddisplayed. The ArtWalk begins at 6 p.m. and takes place between 4th and 9th Streets and PalosVerdes Street to Pacific Avenue, most all of Downtown San Pedro. There’s live entertainment in many of the venues and at the corner of 6th and MesaStreets. Many restaurants offer specials for the evening. And a guided art walk begins at 5:30 p.m. at Sirens Java and Tea, 402 W. 7thStreet. This month the guided art walk will feature Menduina Schneider Art Galleryat 366 W. 7th Street, Cherry Wood at the Back Door Studios, 368-378 W. 7th Street, and Megan Mickeal Photography at 347 W. 7th Street.Literally, everywhere you look in San Pedro you’ll see art. The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District has commissioned a number of public art projects. These include seven murals and 25 paintings on department of transportation utility boxes. The boxesfollow the theme “unexpected Pedro.”9th and Grand–This box entitled, “Crane Transforming,” waspainted by Zahra Bejaune and was inspired by the industrialcranes operating in the Port of Los Angeles and the birds who flyaround San Pedro. “When Zahra looks at the beautiful views ofthe harbor and sees the birds, she often imagines the metalcranes are yearning to transform from their repetitious existenceinto Japanese ‘floating world’ style cranes and fly away,” according to the description by the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, which sponsored her work.—Photo courtesy San Pedro Waterfront Arts DistrictHarbor and 1st Street—This box on the southwest corner, waspainted by Erick Sanchez. He said his “art art consists of an expression of sensations, emotions, ideas and vibrant imagery that isexpressed through figures, implicit and representative. This conceptpermits me to focus on the different cultures that make up the city. One is able to identify with the reflections I paint as they are takenfrom everyday life. Of course, to give it some flavor, I always add abit of satire and sarcasm to the mundanity that surrounds us;whether these are scenes from the community, home, music, workor urban life.”—Photo courtesy San Pedro Waterfront Arts DistrictAugust 2022San Pedro & Peninsula Visitor5
