HISTORICALWHITEWATERA city richin historyWhitewater was established by thePotawatomi who settled here at theconvergence of two rivers, a landrich in resources and potential.Earlier Native Americans, the greatmound builders of the late WoodlandPeriod, created the burial ground that isnow the Whitewater EffigyMound Preserve at 288 S.Indian Mound Parkway.A city is bornDue to the outcome of the1832 Black Hawk War, the NativeAmericans in the area were displacedwest of the Mississippi River. In the year 1837, Whitewater wasflooded with colonists looking forplots of land. The city steadily grew until 1852when the Milwaukee and MississippiRailroads chose Whitewater as a stopbetween Milwaukee and Prairie DuChien. This caused an explosion ofpeople flooding the streets, bringingcommerce and goods right into thecity. Not only did it bring people, itallowed Whitewater’s industriesto sell to outside markets causingthem to grow and in return hire moreworkers.62022 WHITEWATER COMMUNITY GUIDE

The year 1881Whitewater was growing exponentiallyin the years prior to 1881, but by the timethe year began, a series of snowstorms haddevastated the community, leaving the city ina state of peril.Horses and wagons couldn’t get down thestreet and factories couldn’t open their doorsto their workers. One of the largest snowstorms during thistime lasted more than 40 hours! In the end,the snow wasn’t the worst of it.Because of the high amount of snow thataccumulated during winter, when springcame around, the water flooded the areacausing even more havoc and damage. If giant snow banks and Main Streetrivers weren’t enough, a number of firesleveled multiple blocks of the downtownarea. After building new dams, bridges andinfrastructure, Whitewater rebounded and inthe process, learned a lesson or two.Visit the Discover Whitewater office at150 W. Main Street and pick up a HistoricalLandmark Guide and explore Whitewater’spast.Visit the Whitewater Historical Society’swebsite at www.whitewaterhistoricalsociety.org to learn more about the city’s history.WHITEWATER COMMUNITY GUIDE 20227
