From the desk of our Executive Director Anita BowenI bet you are with me inthat spring can’t comesoon enough this year! Ithas certainly been awinter to remember withrecord low temperaturesand plentiful precipitation. That means that there’sbeen more time indoorsthan normal where wehad to find activities topass the time. And, eventhough I love being home and going throughclosets and cabinets as I shared with you inmy last column, when you start to go backto a closet that you just cleaned out, youknow you are going a little stir crazy!! At thetime of the writing of this article, our frontyard is in the form of a small lake that couldfreeze over at any time all depending onwhat the rest of this fickle winter brings!Challenging weather is tough onbusinesses, too, and BCSSI is alwaysconsidering what programs and servicesshould be modified or cancelled to keepeveryone safe. It certainly makes us sadwhen the weather keeps our customersfrom coming through our doors in Lebanonand Zionsville, or prohibits us from seeingyou in your own home or on a transitvehicle. And, all of us look forward towarmer temps to see everyone out andabout again. During the deep wintermonths, we typically spend lots of timedoing year-end reports as well as planningfor the New Year. Since we are beginning anew five-year Strategic Plan (4 goal areashighlighted in the last Senior Sounds), wehave spent extra time focusing on the initialsteps we want to take in this first year of thePlan.I thought I would take a couple of minutes inthis issue to share a little more detail aboutGoal #1 which is to Expand our ProgramOptions and Attract Diverse Ages. We’llhighlight Goals 2-4 in future issues. So, withinGoal #1 is an opportunity for BCSSI to hearfrom you about the things you would like tosee us bring to the community. We took alittle time in January to do some brainstormingwith customers in our Lebanon office, and wewill do that in Zionsville on Friday, March 22nd.If you live in the Zionsville area, please join usfor lunch, conversation and surprises! We arenow taking reservations.During 2019, we will be looking at ways tobring more meaningful engagement to you, aswell as individuals whom we haven’t even metyet. That will also include stretching ourprogramming into evening and weekend hourssometimes, so that those individuals who arenot available during weekdays, don’t miss out. With that being said, we believe that ourcurrent satisfied BCSSI customers are ourvery best ambassadors, so we are counting onyou to invite someone new to come hang outwith us this spring, summer and fall oh, we’llhave things happening next winter, too andsure hope that we won’t have to cancel somany activities and services. When you live inIndiana, you just get what you get, right? Andrest knowing that “tomorrow” it will probably besomething very different! In the meantime, I’m going to be keeping aneye on my little front yard lake, and hope thatsoon it will attract a happy family of ducks. Iam definitely ready for signs of spring to maketheir appearance.3Until Next Time,Anita

BCSSI 2019 Annual Celebration“Ruby Memories”BCSSI hosted its 2019 AnnualCelebration Meeting on February 20.Community members, board membersand staff celebrated the agency’s 2018accomplishments. Attendees enjoyeda delicious breakfast prepared byPoe’s Country Garden Catering. AnitaBowen, Executive Director, gave herannual update.made up the BCSSI family of staffmembers and volunteers serving BooneCounty and beyond are shiningexamples of human beings who want tomake this little corner of the world abetter place they are LUSTROUS.And, if you were to look at a typical rubythrough a microscope, you would findthin mineral inclusions calledneedles. You might see that there areshort needles, long needles, someslender needles and some wider. Theymight appear to be woven tightlytogether. I got a visual (and a smile)when I thought of our customers. Theybring all kinds of characteristics toBCSSI all shapes, sizes andpersonalities. Some challenge us morethan others, but all help us learn, growand become better. Truly, Boone Countyis a tightly woven community and byinteracting with new persons all the time,we can insure continuous qualityimprovement and the strength ofBCSSI for another 40 years.”“In reading through some of the on-linedescriptions for and characteristics of aRuby, it became apparent that it wasperfect to use in our theme for this40th Anniversary Celebration. Whileyou may typically think of the gemssuch as the Ruby as important inmarriage anniversaries, we have usedit here to highlight our organization’s40 years of Ruby Memories becausethe bright red color of this durable, lustrous and rare gem exemplifies who“we are at BCSSI”.To serve a community for 40 yearswith the same mission at heart, and tobe continuing many of our originalprograms is RARE. Though we havehad growing pains through the years, and withstood unique challenges witheach passing decade, we haveremained committed to helpingindividuals in Boone County age welland to keep the generationsconnected. That must mean we areDURABLE. The History of 'APRONS'I don't think our kids know what an apron is. Theprinciple use of Grandma's apron was to protectthe dress underneath because she only had afew. It was also because it was easier to washaprons than dresses and aprons used lessmaterial. But along with that, it served as apotholder for removing hot pans from the oven.It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used forcleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carryingeggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in thewarming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding placesfor shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around herarms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hotwood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in thatapron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had beenshelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in applesthat had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, itwas surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter ofseconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, wavedher apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields todinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that willreplace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Send this to thosewho would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sillto cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They wouldgo crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don'tthink I ever caught anything from an apron - but love. --Hawk Seeker of Truth-BCSSI CORE VALUES: Choice for older adults and their families Enhance, protect and preserve the dignity of older adults Fiscal responsibility Cooperation with other agencies13

For more informationcontact Sonya Shoup, 765-482-5220 or sshoup@booneseniors.org.Thanks to the support of our donors, the Foundation recently gifted 25,000 to BCSSI. The money will be used to support the 2019 BCSSIannual budget and several of the agency activities planned for later this year.BCSSI and the BCSS Foundation welcome all gifts of any size. Both organizations are 501(c)3 organizations andyour donation may be tax-deductible.We hope that you will consider gifting to us in the future. You Can Still Gain TaxBenefits from CharitableDonationsmay have changed considerably formany people. Are there still taxbenefits to making a charitabledonation? Here’s some background:Previously, you may have been ableto deduct your charitable donations ifyou itemized deductions on yourincome tax return. So, for example, ifyou were in the 25 percent tax bracketand you gave 1,000 to a qualifiedcharity, you may have been able todeduct 250.But under the new tax laws, the standard deduction is almostLike most people, you probablyknow several organizations worthy ofyour philanthropy, and you may wellhave contributed to them, perhaps onan annual basis. In the past, whenyou’ve made charitable donations, it’sbeen a win-win: You were able toprovide support to a worthyorganization and you received somevaluable tax benefits. But with thepassage of the new tax laws, things14

doubled for 2018, to 24,000 for jointfilers, and 12,000 for single filers. As aresult, far fewer people are likely toitemize their deductions. If you’re in thisgroup, you may find that you have lessincentive, at least for tax reasons, tomake charitable gifts. However, receiving a taxdeduction is not the only tax benefit ofmaking a charitable gift. If you own anIRA and you’re 70 ½ or older, yougenerally must start taking withdrawals –technically called required minimumdistributions, or RMDs – from yourtraditional IRA. (Roth IRAs are notsubject to RMDs until after the death ofthe owner.) If instead of withdrawing themoney, the IRA owner decides totransfer the funds directly to a qualifiedcharity, the distributed amount can beexcluded from the IRA owner's income. So, in effect, you can get a sizable taxbenefit from your generosity. In fact, youmay be able to move up to 100,000from your IRA per year to an eligiblecharity and have it count as your RMDs,even if the amount donated is more thanthe required minimum withdrawal.Even if you aren’t 70 ½ yet, youmight still gain some tax benefits fromcertain types of charitable donations. When you itemized, and you donatedappreciated stocks, you were generallyallowed a charitable deduction for the fullfair market value of the stocks on thedate of the transfer, even if your originalcost was only a fraction of that value. Now, if you don’t itemize, that charitablecontribution is not deductible, but youcan still avoid the capital gains taxesyou’d have to pay if you sold thesecurities, rather than donating them. Finally, you could name aqualified charity as a beneficiary ofyour IRA or 401(k). This can allow theassets to pass free of income tax tothe charitable group.Given the increased standarddeduction resulting from the new taxlaws, many charitable groups areworried about the potential loss ofcontributions. Nonetheless, as we’veseen, you can still find ways to getsome tax benefits from your owncharitable gifts. And you’ll still get thesame satisfaction from supporting agood cause. This article was written by Edward Jones foruse by your local Edward Jones FinancialAdvisor.
