He was raised in Barryville,NY and attended Coe College inCedar Rapids, Iowa. He later attendedthe law school at the University ofCincinnati. In the Vietnam era, Rolfserved as a scout dog trainer for theUS Army, trained to sniff out landmines.Rolf was a proponent of equal rightsand steadfast in his morals and beliefsin always doing the right thing. Afterlaw school, he worked as a districtattorney and was involved withVISTA working with Native Americantribes in Spokane. Rolf later went onto work for the City of Bellinghambefore he started his private practicein 1979. Rolf was the type of lawyerwho truly went out of his way tohelp the little guy. Rolf often tradedlegal services for skilled labor forfolks unable to afford payment, neverwanting to turn anyone away.Rolf was married soon after settlingin Bellingham and started a family.Rolf raised his three children in thehistoric “Deming Inn”. He instilledthe importance of education in hischildren. He always put his familyahead of his work, seldom missingany of the kids’ sports games. Rolfconsidered his children his proudestaccomplishment. Rolf relished being“Opa” to his grandchildren andwas quick to entertain them withhis Donald Duck impression orhave them listen to the ticking ofhis wrist watch. In addition to serving on the MBSFboard for several years, Rolf served onthe Mt. Baker School District Boardfor years, and coached his kids’ Mt.Baker youth soccer teams for over adecade. In the winter, he would buycoats for disadvantaged kids and hisfamily took in a homeless familyfor a year. Rolf loved animals andwould feed stray cats roaming aroundDeming. Rolf made sure the strayswere trapped and fixed.Rolf loved sports, especially baseball. He sponsored adult basketball andsoftball teams called the “ Rolf’s” forthe better part of three decades. Our condolences to the Beckhusenfamily.Excerpts from Bellingham HeraldVolunteer Job Opening:Newsletter Editor(s)Gail KuromiyaAfter serving as co-editor of thisnewsletter for 20 years along with coeditor Sue Lenssen (16 years), we’veboth decided it’s time to “retire”.Creating the newsletter has been botha joy and sometimes a challenge, butalways satisfying. The newsletter hasso much more potential if passed on to“new blood”. So, the volunteer position of “newsletter editor/creator” isopen! I’d be happy to assist with thetransition. Just e-mail the Foundationat mbsf875@gmail.com.As I looked thru almost 20 yearsworth (2003-2022) of paperwork andgraduation newsletters, I assembledsome astonishing figures. During thatperiod, 836 students were awardedscholarships from the MBSF. Evenmore remarkable is that we awardedover 1.6 million in scholarshipmoney. It seemed unbelievable butI checked the figures and averagingthem out over the 20 years confirmedthey were correct. The Foundation’smotto has been “Our students, their future, your support”. It’sbeen a pleasure to volunteer for anorganization that clearly fulfills itsmission with the help of an incrediblecommunity.
