Contractors can order andinstall the roof curbs early in the construction stage, before decisions onsize requirements have been made. All units feature roll-formed baserail design with forklift slots on 3 sidesof the unit and rigging holes for easiermaneuvering and installation. Stretchwrap packaging protects the unit during shipment and storage.Units are easily converted fromvertical to horizontal applications tomake retrofit and add-on jobs easier. To convert from vertical to horizontaldischarge, simply relocate 2 panels. The same basic unit can be used for avariety of applications and can bequickly modified at the jobsite.HIGH-EFFICIENCY COILSFULLY MODULATING DURABLADEECONOMIZER (OPTION OR ACCESSORY)Standard high-performance, highstatic, belt-driven evaporator-fanmotors enable 48HJ004-014 unitsto operate in most ductworkconfigurations.Ductwork connections are madeeasy by the logical 2 to 1 aspect ratio. On vertical discharge units, ductworkattaches directly to the roof curb.Thru-the-bottom service connection capability comes standard withthe rooftop unit to allow power andcontrol wiring and gas connections tobe routed through the unit’s basepan, thereby minimizing roof penetrations(to prevent water leaks). Power, gas,and control connections are made onthe same side of the unit to simplifyinstallation. The non-corrosive, sloped, condensate drain pan is made in conformance with ASHRAE (AmericanSociety of Heating, Refrigeration, andAir Conditioning Engineers) Standard62 to meet many Indoor-Air Quality(IAQ) specifications. The condensatedrain pan offers both bottom and enddrain capability to minimize roof penetrations. The bottom drain can be usedin conjunction with thru-the-bottomconnections. An external trap must befield supplied.Standard 2-in. throwaway filtersare easily accessed through an easilyremovable filter access panel locateddirectly above the air intake hood; notools are required to change the filters. All units are designed with a single continuous top piece to eliminate leaking at the seams or gasketing.Belt-driven evaporator-fan motorsallow maximum on-site flexibility without changing motors or drives.Low-voltage wiring connectionsare easily made due to the large terminal board which is conveniently locatedfor quick, simple access.3

Features/Benefits (cont)Quiet, efficient operation anddependable performanceAll units are equipped with scrollcompressors which are fully hermeticwith internal vibration isolators forextremely quiet operation. The scrollcompressors are quieter and morereliable than reciprocating designs.Compressors are mounted on an independent base plate for additionalsound integrity and structural support.Efficient condenser fan and motordesign permits operation at low soundlevels.Totally enclosed condenser-fanmotors and permanently lubricatedbearings provide additionaldependability. All coils use state-of-the-art internally enhanced copper tubing.Coils are thoroughly tested with heliumparticles as well as pressure tested atthe factory. Condenser coils have louvered, aluminum lanced fins to providemaximum heat transfer for optimumefficiency and easy cleaning.Carrier’s exclusive dimpled heatexchangers optimize heat transfer forimproved efficiency. The tubular design permits hot gases to make multiple passes across the path of the supply air. In addition, dimpled heat exchanger tubes act as baffles, forcingthe hot gases to stay in close contactwith the cell walls to maximize heattransfer and efficiency. The California Air Quality Management NOx requirement of40 nanograms/joule or lessis met when Low NOx kitCRLOWNOX001A00 is installed on004-006 sizes. The induced draft combustionsystem eliminates the unsightly appearance of flue stacks, and diminishesthe effects of winds on heating operation. The inducer fan draws hot combustion gas through the heat exchanger at the optimum rate for the most effective heat transfer. The induced draftalso prevents contaminants from entering the supply air if a leak in the heatexchanger occurs. The direct spark ignition systemsaves operating expense when compared to old-style pilot ignition systems. No crossover tube is required, therefore no sooting or pilot foulingproblems can occur.4LP conversion kit — Standard unitsare designed for natural gas. An LPConversion Kit is available as an accessory, if required. Installation of the accessory LP kit simply involves changing the gas orifices to accommodateliquid propane gas.Refrigerant circuit protectionassures dependability. All units havestandard:1) loss-of-charge/low-pressure protection switch which allows operationat lower ambient conditions whileprotecting against low-chargeoperation2) freeze-protection thermostat, whichprotects against evaporator coil frostbuild-up3) high-pressure switch, which protectsagainst above normal operatingpressure4) filter driers, which trap moisture anddebris in the refrigeration system.5) Carrier’s exclusive Acutrol metering device, which precisely controlsrefrigerant flow, preventing slugging and floodback, while maintaining optimum unit performance bymetering the circuits individually. Two independent compressor circuits (all 71/2 to 12 ton units) providepinpoint comfort control, improvedefficiency, and back-up capability. The standard control system isreadily adaptable to all conventionaland programmable thermostats.Integrated gas unit controller(IGC) — All ignition components arecontained in the compact IntegratedGas Controller (IGC) that is easily accessible for service. The IGC, designedexclusively by Carrier, provides built indiagnostic capabilities. An LED simplifies troubleshooting by providing visualfault notification and system status information. The IGC board provides exclusive anti-cycle protection for its gasheat operation. The IGC also containsburner control logic for dependableheating operation. The LED is visiblewithout removing the unit control boxaccess panel. 48HJ units maximizeheating efficiency through the IGC’scontrol of evaporator fan ON/OFF delays. The IGC helps make 48HJ unitsreliable for many years.Patented Cycle-LOC protectionsystem provides protection againstcompressor cycling by monitoringcompressor current draw. When lackof compressor current exists, theCycle-LOC circuit board locks out thecompressors. The Cycle-LOC boardmay be manually reset by simplyswitching thermostat to OFF, and thenback to the Cooling or AUTO modes. No manipulation of the unit disconnectswitch is needed.Carrier controls add reliability, efficiency, and simplificationIndoor-air quality (IAQ)Apollo communicating controlscan be ordered as a factory-installedoption. Designed exclusively byCarrier, the controls can be used toactively monitor all modes of operation as well as indoor fan status, filterstatus, indoor-air quality, supply-airtemperature, and outdoor-airtemperature.The Apollo control board is factoryinstalled in the rooftop unit control boxand comes equipped with built-in diagnostic capabilities. Light-emittingdiodes (LEDs) simplify troubleshootingby indicating thermostat commands forboth stages of heating and cooling,evaporator-fan operation, and economizer operation. The Apollo communicating control is designed to work specifically with Carrier TEMP and VVT thermostats. The quality of building air is improved as the Weathermaster seriesutilizes certain key features that assistin improving indoor air quality. Asloped condensate pan eliminates possible biological growth in the rooftopunit. A face-split evaporator coil designproves effective in removing additionalmoisture from the supply air. Two-in.filters are standard in all rooftop unitsand an optional filter status sensor isavailable.

Another optional IAQ feature forthe Weathermaster unit is the exclusive MoistureMiser dehumidificationpackage. This is a factory-installedoption that provides increased dehumidification by cooling the hot liquidrefrigerant leaving the condenser coil. The MoistureMiser consists of a subcooling coil located on the leaving-airside of the evaporator coil. The location of this coil in the indoor airstreamenhances the latent capacity of the48HJ units by as much as 40%. Manybuildings suffer from humidity damageor poor indoor air quality due to humidconditions. The improved latentcapacity provided by the MoistureMiseroption reduces the building’s humidity, eliminating potential property damageand making the space morecomfortable. The MoistureMiser option makes the48HJ units the ideal IAQ rooftop forhot and humid regions. The operationof the MoistureMiser package can becontrolled by a field-installed, wallmounted humidistat. The circuit activates only when needed (using the humidistat) as opposed to some dehumidification systems that operate continuously. The humidistat can be set forany humidity level between 20% and80% relative humidity.Energy Recycler — the IAQ solution for today’s “tight” buildings.Indoor-air quality (IAQ) generally refersto the level of pollutants inside a building. These pollutants include cigarettesmoke, carbon dioxide exhaled byoccupants, radon gas, car exhaust, paint fumes, and odors.Concern over increased indoor airpollutants has been spurred by severalissues: 1) changes in new building construction methods and retrofit of olderbuildings have reduced air infiltrationrates; 2) Synthetic materials release airborne particles, odors, and chemicals;and 3) HVAC (heating, ventilation, andair conditioning) systems that bring inminimal fresh air.In 1989, IAQ concerns causedASHRAE to recommend increasedventilation for all public buildings. Simply introducing fresh air into a building, however, is not always practical or costeffective. Additional ventilation canoverload HVAC systems and increaseenergy costs.Carrier’s 62AQ Energy Recyclerunit solves this dilemma by providingincreased fresh air while keepingincreased costs to a minimum. In addition, the Energy Recycler helps reducehumidity levels, which helps to preventdeterioration of building materials andretards the growth of mold and mildew. The 62AQ Energy Recycler unitprovides the best solution to retainingthe energy-conserving benefits of today’s tighter building constructionwhile improving indoor-air quality.ServiceabilityServicing a rooftop unit has neverbeen easier with the factory-installedhinged panel option. This option includes hinged access panels for filter, compressor, evaporator-fan motor, andcontrol box areas. These panels provide quick and simple access to the major components by simply unlockingand swinging open the different panels. Each hinged access panel is permanently attached to the rooftop unit, eliminating the problem of access panels being dropped and creating a holein the roof (potentially causing a waterleak). This type of damage could voidany warranty offered for a new roof.Optional packages also include thefollowing features to assist in servicingthe rooftop unit: 115-v convenience outlet to powerup electric drills, lights, and refrigerant recovery machines. Thismeans you are no longer required torun a separate 115-v power supplyto your 48HJ rooftops. It can nowbe factory installed.UNIT WITH ENERGY RECYCLERCONDENSER-FANDISCHARGE AIREXHAUSTAIRFRESH AIRINLETOUTDOOR-AIRINLETROOF CURBRETURN AIRBAFFLEMOUNTINGKITOUTDOOR AIRFLOWFILTERACCESSINDOOR AIRFLOWSUPPLY AIRRETURN AIR5
