2BETHLEHEMSTEELCOMPANY.EXPLANATORY NOTES.Large additional mi11 capacity, recently completed and putin operation for the production of wide flange structuralshapes, has made it practical to add a number of new sectionsto our present established line of Bethlehem StructuralShapes. These new sections are now available and areshown in this pamphlet.Three new beam sections are provided, viz.: B24b, B22and B18a. The new 24" and 18" beams, B24b and B1Sa,are to supply the need for heavier 24" and 18" beams havin a greater carrying capacity than our previous line of 24'and 18" beams afforded. The new 22" beams, B22, supplysections intermediate in depth hetween 20" and 24", andwill be found a desirable and economical addition to therange of beam sizes. The comparison of the new 24" and 18" Bethlehem Beamswith Standard Beams, is as follows:BethlehemBeams.B24b, 104.5 lbs.99.5Ibs.B1Sa, 9StandardBeams.24", 115.0Ibs.105.9Ibs.18", 8Particular attention is called to the manner in which theincrease in weight of these beams is obtained by increasingthe thickness of the flange as well as that of the web, insteadof obtaining the entire addition in weight by increasing thethickness of the web only. as in previous methods. Thisentirely new method, on which patents are pending, permitsobtaining an increase in Section Modulus practically pro;x rtional to the added weight. Thus B18a, 74 lbs., compared with B1Sa, 69 lbs., has an increase of 9.7 in SectionModulus, or about 7% per cent increase in modulus, due to theincrease of 5lbs. in weight, which is about 7% per cent increasein weight also. By the process of manufacture the additionto flange thickness is made to the outside of the flange therebyslightly increasing the depth of the beam, but the totalvariation in depth between minimum and maximum is not

BETHLEHEMSTEELCOMPANY.3more than the usual allowable tolerance in depth necessaryin any method of rolling beams.A considerable number of new Column Sections are provided, supplementing our previous list of H Columns, andaffording a line of sections lighter t han our regular H Columns. These supplementary column sections are to supply lightercolumns for many purposes, including shop and mIll buildingconstruction. A series of 6" columns, in various weights, isprovided for specially light construction. The flanges of the new beams have a bevel of 8% per cent,or a slope of 1 in 12. Flanges of the column sections havea uniform slope of 2 per cent. All wei hts include fillets, but areas and all other properties are gIven exclusive of fillets.Tolerances in weight and section, and alI other regulationsconcerning material, lengths, etc., conform to the establishedrules applying to our regular Bethlehem Sections.BENDING FACTORS.-To aid in the selection of columnssubjected to direct loads and also to bending produced byeccentric loads or by other means, bending factors are givenwhich furnish a convenient and practical method of converting the bending moment into an equivalent direct central load.pI -centrally applied load, ;n Ibe.P" -eccentric load, in 100.m -bending moment, in inch Ibs., produced by plIop",-an equivalent central load, in 100., producing thesame maximum stress as bending moment.P -total equivalent load on column, in 100.f -fiber stress, Ibs. per sq. in., due to bending .S -section modulus about axis of bending.A -area of section, square inches.k -bending factor - A -;- S.mP'"Then, f - S' and by assumption A - f.ButaskandAmkp",S' then f - A - A 'Therefore, pili - mk,P - pI P" P'" - pI P" mk.Hence, if the bending moment, in inch 100., is multipliedby the bending factor, k, the product is an equivalent centralload on the column producing the same compressive stress s the bending moment.
