Utilized in NURS 125, Pharmacology, NURS 171,Concepts I and all clinical courses (Used the Entire Program)All nursing students are required to maintain their nurse kit and keep all supplies intact.The nurse kit contains supplies needed as you practice and test out for skills forPharmacology, Concepts I, Concepts II, Concepts III, and Concepts IV. Sun Ray Medical isour vendor.The Nurse kit will not be available for purchase in the College Bookstore. Your nurse kitwill be used for practicing and testing on skills in the Nursing Skills Laboratory oncampus.Additional Time Requirements:For information on Brookdale’s policy on credit hour requirements and outside class studentwork refer to Academic Credit Hour Policy.Skill practice time and testing time in the Nursing lab is required. Integrate concepts of patient centered care, basic therapeutic communication, safety,homeostasis, comfort-rest and immobility in the implementation of the nursing process.3. Demonstrate accountability for safe nursing practice, utilizing basic legal/ethicalprinciples to guide critical thinking, clinical reasoning and decision making that apply topatient care4. Utilize an understanding of the physiological, psychological, sociocultural,developmental, and spiritual influences on communications between the nurse and thepatient to develop a therapeutic relationship.5. Define the role and responsibilities of nurse as patient advocate, assisting patient innavigating through the health care system.6. Plan, organize, and deliver patient care within own scope of practice, as a member ofthe health care team utilizing appropriate verbal, written and electronic documentationof care.7. Describe the concept of evidence –based practice (EBP), including the components ofinformation literacy, by incorporating the National Patient Safety Goals into practice topromote safety and effective nursing care.Grading Standard:In addition to the Academic Progression Policy outlined in the Brookdale Nursing StudentHandbook, the following policies apply1. Fall 2020SyllabusNursing Laboratory and Clinical RequirementsThe Nursing lab will serve as the student’s clinical experience for the first eight weeks of thiscourse. The remaining five weeks the students will attend clinical at the assigned clinicalagency. For the clinical portion of the course the student will receive a pass or fail grade. Thestudent must receive a pass grade in order to continue to the next nursing course.In addition to the clinical experience, the student will complete assigned Nursing laboratorycompetencies and assignments by the scheduled due date. Students are required to attendall on campus and agency clinical lab sessions.As outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook, only a six hour absence (one week’s worth ofclinical) is permitted each semester. In the event of an absence from a clinical lab session,students must notify the instructor, prior to the clinical date. A make-up is required for themissed lab session. Students shall dress for clinical in accordance with the policy as outlinedin the student handbook.Department Policies:COURSE & DEPARTMENT POLICIES: Adhere to the policies outlined in the current NursingStudent Handbook which is available in CANVAS, the learning management system and on theBrookdale website ute/nursing/nursingstudent-handbook/. In addition, adhere to the Brookdale examination policies and the NURS171 exam review policy. Exams must be reviewed within 2 weeks of exam administration duringoffice hours or by appointment. The unit 4 exam will be by appointment only prior to the finalexam for those students scoring 74%. However,the course and Nursing program reserves the right to modify, supplement, and make changesas the need arises.Should the need for a ZOOM (or other video communication) meeting, lesson or clinicalexperience be needed, it is required that both parties have their camera on, be neatly dressed,with minimal background noise. A lab coat is required for any remote clinical sessions.The ZOOM (or other video communication) lesson may or may not be recorded, students will benotified at the start of the session. Individual (private) discussions will not be recorded.8.20

Fall 2020SyllabusFor students who are ill from Covid-19 or are taking care of a family member with Covid-19,extended time to complete assignments will be granted. Communicate with course faculty if anextension is needed. This request must be supported by a note from a healthcare provider(physician/APN). A final grade for the course will not be received until all assignments and/orexams are complete.NURS 171 will use e mail and the learning management system for delivery of courseinformation, including syllabi, assignments, lecture materials, emails, discussion groups,quizzes, and testing.All theoretical (content related) testing for NURS 171 will be done remotely. The College alsohas limited number of computers available to borrow. Zoom and CANVAS can be accessedfrom any network device.Students enrolled in any NURS course are expected to be able to: Use a web browser and word processor Enter data Send and receive email Locate a file and upload it to a drop box Copy and paste Use spell checkNURS 171 will utilize remote online testing for exams.
