APPLYING TO THE FINE ARTS ACADEMYThe purpose of this document is to provide you with comprehensive instructions related to the applicationand audition process to become a McCallum HS Fine Arts Academy major. STEPS TOWARDSBECOMINGAN ACADEMY MAJORThe following section provides information regarding thesteps you must take towards completing your applicationpackage and auditioning to becoming a Fine Arts Academy Major. In addition to the required curriculum and expectations of each major asoutlined on the major contract, students are expected to complete coursework as well as participate inMacTheatre musicals to graduate with the Certificate.To learn what specific courses and performance requirements are expected for each major, go to CurriculumRequirements in the Academy webpages rriculumrequirements/) or page 17-20 of this document.4

STEP ONEMCCALLUM FINE ARTS ACADEMY APPLICATION:READ AND THEN COMPLETEThe MAC FAA application collects basic demographic and contact information as well as your choice ofmajor(s).1. Complete this Step as early as possible during Fall Semester.2. You will be asked to provide a primary major choice and, if applicable, a secondary major.a. Students should only indicate a secondary major choice if they wish to audition in that major.b. Students can audition in either 1 or 2 majors.c. If a student is accepted into both majors, s/he can choose to participate in only one. Or, if astudent is considering double majoring, please go to page 15-16.3. Confirm all information before submitting, since data will be used for all future communications. Werecommend using a personal email address at start of application.4. After completion of the MAC FAA Application, parent will receive a confirmation email (if this isselected within application and a personal (non-AISD) email is used at start). If you did not select toreceive a confirmation email, do not contact the Academy office to confirm. Instead, please use thesystems provided for confirmation. You will be contacted if we are missing portions of your applicationin January.5. Thank you for reading! Now, go to the MAC Applicationa. (https://tinyurl.com/MACFAAApplication20-21yr)STEP TWOAISD INTENT TO APPLY TO A MAGNET OR APPLICATION PROGRAM:READ AND THEN COMPLETEThe AISD Intent to Apply collects the schools/programs you are interested in applying to as well as the emailaddresses of the three people who will be completing your teacher recommendations.1. STOP! Review the TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS section on page 9-10 to learn more about bestpractices for obtaining recommendations. Read carefully as there are many parts to consider.2. For parents of current AISD students:a. Go to your online Parent Cloud account. (my.austinisd.org) (Be sure you do NOT create a newrecord for your student. Tech tips are provided on page 21.)b. Search and click on the “AISD Intent to Apply” tile in Parent Cloud.c. Within your completion of the AISD Intent to Apply form, you must provide the email addressfor each of your 3 teachers who will be providing recommendations for you.d. You will receive confirmation of your AISD Intent to Apply submission.3. For parents of non-AISD students:a. Go to my.austinisd.org and follow the “Parent Cloud Registration” instructions to sign up forParent Cloud access online. (If your student attended any AISD school at any time for any lengthof time, be sure you do NOT create a new student record. Tech tips are on page 21.)5

4. Once in Parent Cloud, follow the ‘current AISD student’ instructions above.5. Parents will be able access Parent Cloud and the AISD Intent to Apply tile at any time to make updates,to review submission of teacher recommendations, or to resend a recommendation request. Please doNOT contact the Academy Office to confirm submission.HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CLICK SUBMIT ON THE AISD INTENT TO APPLY:1. An email is sent to the teacher’s address you indicated, which contains a link to an onlinerecommendation form for the teacher.a. You will be able to confirm that it was sent to the teacher by going back into the AISD Intent toApply and looking by where you entered the email address for “Recommendation Sent Datexx/xx/xxxx”.i. You will also see a checkbox and “Resend Email” should you need to do so (eg. the teachersays they never received it.) If you do need to resend the invite, be sure to double check thatthe email address is entered correctly. Then email the teacher directly notifying of the resend.b. You will also be able to confirm that the recommendation was received in the system from theteacher. In the same area, under the sent date, you will see “Recommendation Completed Datexx/xx/xxxx”. If it is nearing the due date and you do not see this indicator, then you should makedirect contact with that teacher to remind them of the recommendation. It never hurts to resendthe email again as well.c. Once you see both indicators that the recommendation has been sent and completed, you can beassured the system has the recommendation for that teacher.2. Teachers will receive a confirmation email upon their submission of your recommendation.3. You will be contacted if we are missing portions of your application in January. Please do not contactthe Academy office to confirm submission.STEP THREEREMAINING APPLICATION ITEMS:1. SHORT ANSWERS AND ESSAY handwritten responses (to becompleted by student only – instructions on page 10)a. Complete on lined 8 ½ x 11 notebook paper, staple togetherand submit to Academy Office by mail or drop off at MACMain Office. Please do not use of folder or notebook.(Submission details can be found on page 11.)2. GRADE REPORTS (need the entire 2018-2019 school year and fall2019 – instructions on pages 11)a. For students who have been an AISD student during theentire 2018-2019 yr as well as fall 2019, we access yourgrade reports through your AISD Intent to Applysubmission. NO action required.b. For non-AISD students and students who were not in AISD during the entire grade reportperiod, you must submit paper copies of grade reports along with your short answer and essayresponses. (Submission details can be found on page 11.)6

STEP FOURAUDITION OR PORTFOLIO REVIEW:1. All prospective student application packages are screened and approved/ denied to move forward inthe process towards auditions by the Fine Arts AcademyOffice.a. Screening coincides with parameters expected ofcurrent majors: minimum of 70 in all classes and an inclass attendance rate of 90% as well as a completeapplication package.b. The Academy Director calls individual parents whenthere is a significant number of concerning indicatorsin the application package.c. Upon screening completion of all prospects, the FineArts Academy Office contacts parents via email toinvite students to audition or portfolio review.2. Students who are invited to audition or portfolio review will be asked to register for an audition timeslot. (Directions for audition registration is provided in the invite email. Schedule of auditions can befound on page 12 and ition/.)3. Each major requires specific preparation for their audition or portfolio review process. Each studentshould be prepared to answer interview questions from faculty as well. (List of audition or portfolioreview requirements can be found on page 12-14 and link above.)4. Auditions are judged using a rubric assessment tool. Rubrics will be accessible online at the link aboveno later than November 1st. Judges in most instances are the faculty of that major.5. Parents can request a copy of the audition rubric after completion of the full selection process.STEP FIVEACCEPTANCE PROCESS:1. Faculty have access to the prospective student’s entire application package alongside the results of theaudition and portfolio review process.2. ALL students who meet the criteria necessary to become a McCallum Fine Arts Academy major will beaccepted. We will accept 80% of our incoming class using this acceptance criteria (see next page).3. The McCallum Fine Arts Academy is being intentional in removing barriers so that all students haveaccess to share their talents. As such, 20% of our incoming class will be those prospects who meet atleast 2 of 3 special circumstances. (see next page)4. Students are postal mailed a letter of acceptance on February 21, 2020 along with important contractdocumentation to return to the Academy Office by March 6, 2020. Students not accepted will also besent a letter on February 21, 2020. All AISD Magnet and Application programs will provide notice ofacceptance at the same time.7

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:a. Student grade and attendance reports are screened using the same expectations required tomaintain status when an Academy major. These include 70% minimum grades and 90% minimumin-class attendance.b. Those prospective students with a complete application package who meet the grade andattendance criteria are invited to audition.c. When each prospect auditions, s/he is scored using an audition rubric. Scores are sorted fromhighest to lowest. *Faculty also score the short answer and essay submissions.d. Faculty determine the rubric cut score (eg. rubric total possible score of 50 - faculty may determine35 is score that students must achieve to be accepted). All students at or above the score areaccepted; this group becomes 80% of the incoming class of majors.ACCEPTANCE SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES:For the remaining 20%, we will start with the next student prospect according to the audition rubric scores.We will complete a deeper dive into the student's application, and, if s/he meets two out of three of thespecial circumstances, s/he will receive an acceptance. We will continue doing this until we have acceptedthe next 20% or until we reach the score below which we do not feel a student will be successful atMcCallum.Special Circumstance Characteristicsa. Student will be in the first generation of their family to attend college.b. Student is zoned to a Middle School where the official population of students who qualify aseconomically disadvantaged is 50% or greater. (data sourced from AISD)c. Student belongs to a racial or ethnic group that is underrepresented in the Fine Arts Academycompared with the City of Austin demographic profile.STEP SIXWAITLIST PROCESS:1. The Waitlist process will only be implemented in the situationwhere, in order to meet our intentional equity, access andinclusion goal, we would like to fill spots rejected by those firstinvited from the 20% group.a. No Waitlist process will be used other than for this purpose.However, we invite any student not accepted to reapply asan incoming sophomore, if possible.b. The Waitlist process, if implemented, happens only onceand does not reoccur at any time.c. Any waitlisted student who is invited to become a majorwill also receive a letter of acceptance as well as importantdocumentation to return to the Academy Office.8

TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS1. Your teacher recommendations can only besubmitted through the AISD Intent to Apply process.2. You are required to have a total of 3 teacherrecommendations. The purpose of the recs is togive us a better idea of the qualities you possess inaddition to your talent and skill.a. ONE rec must be from your current Fine Artsteacher.i. You may use a school teacher or aprivate instructor. *Tip – If you havea choice, consider using the person you have known the longest or have the strongestrelationship. The Fine Arts teacher does NOT need to be from the fine arts discipline towhich you are hoping to major.b. Your other TWO recs must be from the following: either your current English Language Artsteacher or your current Social Studies teacher AND either your current Math teacher orcurrent Science teacher.c. If you are applying to more than one AISD program, be SURE you are selecting who willcomplete your recommendation based on what type of teacher each program requires. Only 3recs are able to be collected by the AISD Intent to Apply system.3. Here are the steps for requesting the three teacher recommendations.a. Before Thanksgiving break at the latest, you should have determined which teachers youwould like to complete a recommendation for you. Do not delay in completing the remainingsteps below to ensure teachers have ample time to complete the rec for you by the January24th deadline.b. The student should have a polite and respectful in-person conversation with each of the 3teachers that they wish to receive a recommendation to convey her/his interest in attendingthe Fine Arts Academy and to ask if the teacher could complete a recommendation forher/him.i. Please do not submit a teacher’s emailaddress without discussing it with thatteacher first. You risk getting a poorrecommendation from the teacher.ii. For example, here is a sample conversationstarter: Mr. or Ms. Teacher, I would like toask if you would fill out a McCallum FineArts Academy recommendation forme. Here are some reasons I believe I haveearned a good recommendation – statereasons. The recs must be submitted byJanuary 24th. Thank you.c. The student should communicate to the teacher that they (the teacher) will receive an emailfrom AISD with a link to complete a recommendation for the student. Be sure to tell the9

teacher that the deadline to submit the rec is January 24, 2020 but CAN be submitted any timein advance once the emailed link is received.4. The parent should collect the email addresses from the 3 teachers. The email addresses will then needto be entered during the AISD Intent to Apply submission. Inaccurate email addresses will delay therecommendation. (Review Step Two on pg 5-6 if needed.)5. Do NOT submit more than the required three teacher recommendations. Extra submissions will bediscarded.SHORT ANSWEROn a separate sheet(s) of lined 8 ½ x 11 notebook paper (staple together), students should address thefollowing 4 prompts in her/his own handwriting. You are welcome to write out the question prompt and thenanswer it. (Contact the Academy Office directly if there are documented writing challenges, which require a modification tosubmission directions.)1. What other subjects, disciplines, or activities do you enjoy besides your area of primary interest in thefine arts? Why?2. What prior arts training, performances, or exhibitions have you participated? Briefly explain your rolein these activities and why the experience was valuable. [Examples might include: summer art camp,community theatre, private lessons, or local community fine arts group. If you are applying to Dance,list dance studios, what dance you have studied, and how many years you studied.]3. What recognitions have you received for special projects and/or activities in fine arts or otheracademics?4. Describe your commitment to remaining a Fine Arts Academy major for the next 4 years even if yourinterests evolve or you encounter challenges.ESSAYOn a separate sheet(s) of lined 8 ½ x 11 notebook paper (stapletogether) from the short answers, complete a handwrittenessay individually and independently of approximately 500words addressing the following prompt.Describe yourself and your personal traits and goals. Explain what character traits you have that willdemonstrate your ability to meet the challenges, thrive, and contribute to Academy culture all the way throughto graduation? Include in your essay what role being involved in a high school academy known for rigorousacademics and fine arts might play in working toward your goals.10

GRADE REPORTSSTUDENTS WHO ARE NEW TO AISD, FROM PRIVATE SCHOOL OR FROM HOME SCHOOL:1. Your grade reports (entire 2018-2019 school year AND fall 2019) cannot be obtained through the AISDIntent to Apply process, since you have not been an AISD student. Therefore, along with the shortanswers and essay of your application, please include a hard copy of your grade reports. (Seesubmission details below for more.)2. If you do not have traditional grade reports, provide documentation as close as possible to what isrequired.STUDENTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN AISD:1. When you complete the AISD Intent to Apply form, you provide permission for AISD to release yourgrades to all programs to which you are applying. We receive them through this system. No actionneeded.APPLICATION SUBMISSION DETAILS1. All hard copy materials (short answers, essay and grade reports, as applicable) should be submittedtogether at the same time. Materials should be secured together or in an envelope AND clearlylabeled with the student’s name and labeled for the Fine Arts Academy.2. This portion of the application package should be mailed OR dropped off to the MAC Main Office nolater than 4:00pm Friday, January 10, 2019.a. If mailing, ensure we will receive the paperwork by thisdeadline (postmark will not suffice).i. Address it to: McCallum High School Fine ArtsAcademy, RE: 2020-2021yr Application, 5600Sunshine Drive, Austin, Texas 78756.b. If dropping off, ensure all materials are labeled withthe student’s name and are put in an envelope orsecured with the student’s name and labeled Fine ArtsAcademy Application Materials on it.c. SCHEDULE OF AUDITIONSAudition is by invitation only. In late January, you will register for a specific time slot on one of the auditiondates available for your major. We recommend clearing your schedule for all of the dates that auditions aretaking place for your major NOW, just in case no additional slots are available on any given day. You will beinvited to audition only in the major(s) indicated on your MAC FAA Applicaation. Specific times TBA – datessubject to change. Audition rubrics will be posted online no laterthan November 1st.CHORAL STUDIES (Rubric: ition/)Must perform a prepared and memorized solo with live piano accompaniment (bring two copies ofaudition music). Accompanist will be provided by the choral faculty. Music must be published andavailable for purchase (either online or from a music store). Music from the UIL Prescribed Music List(Class I, II or III) or similar literature is preferred. Popular music/solos and musical theater songs are notrecommended. Recommended books from which to choose audition music are any of the AlfredPublishing “Folk Songs for Solo Singers” books.12

Be prepared to sight-read and to vocalize.Interview; be prepared to answer questions on experience or interest in choral/vocal musicCINEMATIC ARTS (Rubric: ition/)Original digital film 2-5 minutes in length AND an accompanying script of the film.In the film tell us about yourself without appearing in the film or narrating it.You must shoot and edit the film yourself.Be creative. Think outside the box.Digital film may be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo OR you may bring it with you on your laptop ro on ausb drive (usb film file should be H.264 or Mpeg2 formatted).Script must be typed in proper screenplay format. Screenplay format resource (enter email onhomepage): celtx.comCOLLABORATIVE PIANO (Rubric: ition/)Perform two prepared pieces of contrasting styles (should be on UIL Class I solo repertoire lists or ofequal difficulty)Perform all major/harmonic minor scales (minimum two octaves in parallel motion); basic I-IV-V7-Ichord progressions in all keys; simple transposition of a short melody with choral accompanimentSight-readingInterview covering the applicant’s piano history will be included.DANCE (Rubric: ition/)Wear dance attire and hair up. Please be prepared to dance without dance shoes or socks. Balletshoes optional for the ballet barre.Students will participate in a group audition and an individual audition.o Group audition includes Ballet Barre, Modern Center, and Jazz combination.o For the individual portion, the student will prepare a 1-2 minute solo and complete a shortinterview.§ The prepared dance solo should be in the style of the dancer’s choice. Please do notwear costumes.§ Please provide your own music for the dance solo. Music is not required if the dancerwishes to dance in silence or acapella. Music for dance solo choreography should be loaded in an electronicdevice: phone, iPod or iPad, etc that utilizes an AUX cord or Bluetooth. Thesafest method is to use a MP3 file located on the electronic device. Please makesure the device is fully charged prior to arrival at McCallum. Students can use YouTube or Spotify or other internet based music at their ownrisk as the directors cannot guarantee the internet connection on the campus. We do not have a CD player available in the audition. If the music does not work, the directors will ask the dancer to perform withoutmusic, and it will not affect their standing in the audition.13

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: BAND (Rubric: tion/)Must perform a prepared solo that best demonstrates the student’smusical ability and talent level. Music must be published and available forpurchase (either online or from a music store). Music from the UILPrescribed Music List (Class I, II or III), TMEA Etudes or similar literature ispreferred. Popular music/solos are not recommended. Memorization is notrequired.Bring instrument and two copies of audition music (percussionists,bring sticks/mallets only)Be prepared to play all 12 Major scales (writtenC/G/D/A/E/B/F#(Gb)/C#(Db)/Ab/Eb/Bb/F). Scales are to be performed oneor two octaves (preferred). Memorization is not required, butrecommended.Sight reading is not required for the audition.Percussion AuditionsSnareo Open to close (Slow to Fast) double stroke roll.o Etude/solo of your choice.Malletso 12 major scales (memory preferred)o One octave without arpeggios.o Etude/solo of your choice (2 or 4 mallets)*Optional- Drumseto If you feel like drumset is one of your strongest percussion instruments, you can prepare adrumset audition in addition to snare and mallets.o Play the drumset part to one song.o Demonstrate drum styles. -16 measures of: Medium swing, fast swing, funk, and latin.*Optional- Timpanio If you feel like timpani is one of your strongest percussion instruments, you can prepare a timpanietude/solo in addition to snare and mallets.INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: CLASSICAL GUITAR (Rubric: tion/)Perform a published classical guitar piece that best represents the student’s current ability.Identify flashcards of all notes in first position, perform an 8-12 measure sight reading excerpt(common time signature, quarter notes and eighth notes, C major/ a minor).Briefly demonstrate free stroke alternations on treble strings (example: four quarter notes alternating Iand M on G,B, and E strings).INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: ORCHESTRA (Rubric: ition/)Must perform a prepared solo that best demonstrates the student’s musical ability and talent level. Musicmust be published and available for purchase (either online or from a music store). Music from the UILPrescribed Music List (Class I, II or III), TMEA Etudes or similar literature is preferred. THEATREPERFORMANCE THEATRE applicants: (Rubric: ition/)Students auditioning for the Performance Theatre major will need to prepare two contrasting oneminute long monologues from plays (not musicals, films, etc.). Do what you do best! Show us yourstrengths and true range. Pick roles that you like and can identify with. Read the plays and know theactual circumstances of the characters.Following your monologues, you will be asked to perform a short improvisation and to answer a fewinterview questions.Monologue advice We recommend you choose monologues from plays. Avoid monologues writtenspecifically for collections, monologues from musicals (the high points are in the songs!), or monologues fromyour favorite films and TV shows. No self-written material will be accepted. Characters should be roughly ageappropriate (within five years of your own age, either direction). We look for strong choices, personalizationand knowledge of the play. Pick contrasting selections. This can mean classical/contemporary,comic/dramatic, two contrasting styles. We would like one of the monologues to be post-1980, contemporaryrealistic drama. Please do not do monologues from You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Promedy, or TheFantastics.What we are looking for We accept all kinds of students, from different backgrounds and levels ofexperience. The common factors are, first, a professional artistic attitude that will fuel you through your fouryears at McCallum Fine Arts Academy and well beyond. Second, we want to see a foundation in technique thatdemonstrates a commitment to your own development and helps us understand your potential. Third, wewant to get a sense of your individual taste and interests within the world of Theatre, Film and TV.
