Initially written by the Nursing faculty, the handbook is updated periodically.The nursing educational environment has unique characteristics and requirementsbecause you will be interacting with patients and health care services. Therefore, thesepolicies and procedures are in addition to those detailed in the Brookdale Catalog(http://catalog.Brookdalecc.edu/) and the Brookdale Student ook-2/0). In the event there appears to bea conflict between information in this handbook and the Brookdale Catalog or BrookdaleStudent Handbook, the more restrictive policy will be enforced.Each semester, a copy of the handbook is posted on the course learning managementsystem (CANVAS). Page 3NEW JERSEY STATE BOARD OF NURSING REQUIREMENTSQualification of ApplicantsNew Jersey State Board of Nursing statute 45:11-23 et. seq., and Regulations (N.J.S.A.13:37) govern the legal practice of nursing in the state. The NJ Nurse Practice Act as itrelates to the roles of the Registered Nurse is included as Appendix A.Graduation from the Brookdale Community College Nursing Program does notguarantee eligibility to meet licensing requirements. An applicant for a license topractice professional nursing shall submit to the board evidence in such form as theboard may prescribe that the applicant:1. Has attained his or her eighteenth birthday.2. Is of good moral character, is not a habitual user of drugs, and has never beenconvicted or has not pleaded nolo vult contendere or non vult to an indictment,information or complaint alleging a violation of any Federal or State law relatingto narcotic drugs.3. Holds a diploma from an accredited four-year high school or the equivalentthereof as determined by the New Jersey State Department of Education.4. Has completed a course of professional nursing study in an accredited school ofprofessional nursing as defined by the board and holds a diploma therefrom.Grounds for refusal to admit to examination, refusal to issue or to suspend orrevoke any certificate, registration or license.(Nursing Practice Act State of New Jersey (P.L. 1947, c. 262, as amended 45: 1-21)The NJ Board of Nursing may refuse to admit a person to an examination or may refuseto issue or may suspend or revoke any certificate, registration or license issued by theBoard upon proof that the applicant or holder of such certificate, registration or license:1. Has obtained a certificate, registration, license or authorization to sit for anexamination, as the case may be, through fraud, deception or misrepresentation.2. Has engaged in the use or employment of dishonesty, fraud, deception,misrepresentation, false promise or false pretense.3. Has engaged in gross negligence, gross malpractice or gross incompetence.4. Has engaged in repeated acts of negligence, malpractice or incompetence.5. Has engaged in professional or occupational misconduct as may be determinedby the Board.6. Has been convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude or any crime relatingadversely to the activity regulated by the Board. For the purpose of thissubsection a plea of guilty, non vult, nolo contendere or any such disposition oralleged criminal activity shall be deemed a conviction.7. Has had his authority to engage in the activity regulated by the Board revoked orsuspended by any other state, agency, or authority for reasons consistent withthis section.8. Has violated or failed to comply with the provisions of any act or regulationadministered by the Board.9.
