COURSE DESCRIPTIONSGUITAR CRAFTMAJOR AREA // GUITAR CRAFTGCRFT-101 ELECTRONICS 1 (1)An introduction to guitar and bass electronics. Topicsinclude: understanding magnetic, piezo, and activepickups, proper shielding techniques, switching options,and proper soldering technique as well as troubleshooting and repair. Students are required to research awide range of after-market electronics. Ten lecture hoursand 10 supervised lab hours plus projects for one quarter.GCRFT-102 FRETWORK AND SETUP 1 (2)In this course, students will learn essential guitarmaintenance techniques used by professional technicians.String height and truss rod adjustment, intonation,fret dressing and fret replacement are covered alongwith effective methods for troubleshooting relatedproblems. Students will learn principles of temperamentand harmonics as well as how to adjust the instrumentfor proper musical “feel.” Eight lecture hours and 24supervised lab hours plus projects for one quarter.COURSESGCRFT-103 INSTRUMENT DESIGN 1 (2)Every detail of an instrument’s design affects its musicalityand playability. This course covers principles of neck,headstock, and body design, including the weight andmusical properties of various types of tone woods aswell as pickguard and control cover fabrication anddesign, selecting instrument hardware, musical qualitiesof hardware materials, overview of instrument fabricationhistory, and template design. Eight lecture hours and14 supervised lab hours plus independent researchassignments and design projects for one quarter.GCRFT-104 INSTRUMENT FABRICATION 1 (6)Building outstanding instruments starts withunderstanding the tonal properties of wood and shapingit to produce the most musical results. This course isan introduction to the use of woodworking tools andtechniques, including routing, jointing, milling, andshaping along with the use of large industrial and handheld tools. Six lecture hours and 33 supervised lab hoursplus independent fabrication projects for one quarter.GCRFT-105 INSTRUMENT REPAIR (2)This course covers the methodology and organizationof materials and procedures for basic guitarrepair and modification. Topics include: building therelationship between musician-client and technician, andcommunicating in musical and technical language. Four lecture hoursand six supervised lab hours plus independent researchassignments and design projects for one quarter.GCRFT-204 INSTRUMENT FABRICATION 2 (6)Prerequisites: GCRFT-104 Instrument Fabrication 1. Theultimate proof of a luthier’s knowledge and skill is in theinstrument itself. As the centerpiece of the program, eachstudent designs and fabricates a personal electric guitaror bass from raw materials, including instrument bodies,necks and pickups as well as painting and buffing. Fourlecture hours and 35 supervised lab hours plus independentfabrication project for one quarter.GCRFT-206 FINISH WORK (3)Prerequisites: GCRFT-103 Instrument Design 1, GCRFT-104Instrument Fabrication 1:An instrument’s finish is not onlycosmetic, but can have a profound effect on its musicalproperties. This course covers procedures and techniquesfor finishing and repairing musical instruments, includingpreparation, painting, and buffing. Eachstudent builds a complete acoustic guitar from raw materials.Topics include: wood selection, sizing stock and surfacing,bracing, neck and body construction, scaling, marquetry,inlay work and setup. 20 lecture hours and 39 supervised labhours plus projects.GCRFT-305 ACOUSTIC GUITAR FIXTURES (4)Prerequisites: GCRFT-203 Instrument Design 2. Design andmanufacture of all necessary fixtures for the constructionof an acoustic guitar. Includes molds, clamping fixtures andlayout templates. Six lecture hours and 28 supervised labhours.GCRFT-306 ACOUSTIC GUITAR FINISHING (2)Prerequisites: GCRFT-106 Finish Work. Techniques forfinishing acoustic guitars, including wood preparation, filling,masking, sealing, top coating, sanding, color sanding andbuffing. Eight lecture hours and 14 supervised lab hours.15

As such, all students must meet minimumadmissions requirements.REGISTRATIONStudents are expected to arrive prior to the start of classesfor registration and orientation. Late registration will be helduntil Friday of the first week of classes. Registration afterthe first week of classes is by permission only. Studentswho need housing/roommate assistance should arrive atleast two weeks prior to the start of classes. Daily housingmeetings and new student tours will take place duringregistration week.APPLICATION PROCESSGENERALCERTIFICATE16Send all of the following items together by mail along withany additional items required by the program to which youare applying (see below): Completed application form. 100.00 USD application fee. High school diploma or proof of G.E.D. ADMISSIONSNOTICES REGARDING CREDITNOTICE CONCERNINGTRANSFERABILITY OF CREDITS ANDCREDENTIALS EARNED AT MUSICIANSINSTITUTEMusicians Institute Guitar Craft Academy Nashville isa special purpose institution. That purpose is inspiringexcellence in the art of guitar building and design whilepreparing students for careers in the music industry.Students should be aware that transfer of credit is always theresponsibility of the receiving institution. Whether or notcredits transfer is solely up to the receiving institution. Anystudent interested in transferring credit hours should checkwith the receiving institution directly to determine to whatextent, if any, credit hours can be transferred.CREDIT GRANTED FOR PREVIOUSEDUCATION, TRAINING, ANDEXPERIENCE.Musicians Institute Guitar Craft Academy does not acceptor grant credit for/from previous education, training orexperience.Any covered individual will be able to attend or participate inthe course of education during the period beginning on thedate on which the individual provides to the educationalinstitution a certificate of eligibility for entitlement toeducational assistance under chapter 31 or 33 (a “certificateof eligibility” can also include a “Statement of Benefits”obtained from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA)website – eBenefits, or a VAF 28-1905 form for chapter 31authorization purposes) and ending on the earlier of thefollowing dates:1. The date on which payment from VA is made to theinstitution.2. 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition andfees following the receipt of the certificate of eligibility.Guitar Craft Academy will not impose any penalty, includingthe assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes,libraries, or other institutional facilities, or the requirementthat a covered individual borrows additional funds, on anycovered individual because of the individual’s inability tomeet his or her financial obligations to the institution due tothe delayed disbursement funding from VA under chapter 31or 33.The transferability of credits you earn at Musicians Institute isat the complete discretion of an institution to which you mayseek to transfer.
