About the ParaPro AssessmentEach edition of the test is reviewed for accuracy, fairness and relevance many times during itsdevelopment. After the test is administered, butbefore scores are released, each question undergoesrigorous statistical analysis to confirm that it isaccurate, comparable to previous tests and fair tosubgroups of test takers. These procedures meet andexceed the exacting standards of the professionalmeasurement community and ETS’s own Standardsfor Quality and Fairness. The ETS ParaPro Assessment was developed inresponse to the federal No Child Left Behind Act,which was signed into law by President Bush inJanuary 2002. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),which has replaced NCLB, leaves these requirementsin place. The law requires that paraprofessionalsserving in an instructional capacity satisfy one of thefollowing: An associate of arts degree OR Two years of college ORThe ParaPro Assessment is reviewed and updated onan ongoing basis to confirm that it provides the valid, reliable information states and districts need to meetlegislative mandates. Demonstrate, through a state or local academicassessment, knowledge of, and the ability toassist in, the instruction of reading, writing, andmathEstablishing Qualifying (Passing) ScoresThe choice of test(s) to satisfy the third option is leftto the discretion of states and districts.ETS does not set qualifying (passing) scores for theParaPro Assessment. Each agency (state, district, orother institution) that elects to use the Assessmentfor purposes of qualifying paraprofessionals isresponsible for establishing its own qualifying(passing) score. ETS offers to work with agencies toconduct passing score studies in accordance withrecommended professional practices, as described, for example, in the ETS Standards for Quality andFairness and the Standards for Educational andPsychological Testing, developed jointly by the AERA,APA and NCME. ETS’s agreement with agenciesusing the ParaPro Assessment is that scores from theassessment not be the sole criterion for decisionsreached by the agency. To view a current list of statesand school districts that use the ParaPro Assessmentalong with their passing scores, please visit:http://www.ets.org/parapro/state requirements/.The ParaPro Assessment measures prospective andpracticing paraprofessionals’ skills and knowledgein reading, mathematics and writing, as well as theability to apply those skills and knowledge to assist inclassroom instruction. The Assessment is available in computer-deliveredformat only. Please note: the ParaPro Assessment isadministered in English only. How the Assessment Was DevelopedThe ParaPro Assessment reflects research andprofessional judgment and experience of educatorsacross the country. The 21/2 hour test was developedwith the assistance of an advisory committeecomposed of paraprofessionals and teachers whowork with paraprofessionals. A thorough job analysiswas conducted to determine what knowledge andskills in the areas of reading, writing and mathematicsare important for paraprofessionals.2022–23 ParaPro Assessment pro
