He set thetone for the event.Doors open to great ideasApart from stimulating fascinating discussion, the symposium highlighted the importance of keeping the doors atBaltic Yachts wide open to those with great ideas and a can-do attitude. Baltic Yachts operates very effectivelywhen our own engineers work with experts from outside the company to find new solutions.Baltic Yachts is keen to build on the symposium idea to encourage more discussion and networking and we areworking on a similar event for 2019.Stand out yachts at MonacoHaving successfully delivered two key yachts in the Baltic 175 Pink Gin and the Baltic M78 Bill and Me, our buildteams are now flat out with four new projects, updates for which can be seen on page 10.10Both Pink Gin and Bill and Me will be displayed at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show (27-30 September) andthe Baltic Yachts team look forward to meeting you there.12We are looking to the future with real confidence as Baltic Yachts has established itself as the go-to yard forcarbon composite yacht construction, its experience in which can now be used to build on the successful launchof the Baltic M78.COVERSFront - BALTIC175 PINK GINBack - BALTIC M78 BILL AND ME16Disruptive Thinking and CelebrationNEW PROJECTS182022In the meantime may I wish you fair winds!Henry Hawkins — Chief Executive Officer

BALTIC YACHTS SYMPOSIUMExperts Ponder The Next Generation of SuperyachtingNurturing innovation, disruptive thinking and great ideasfrom across a company are fundamental to success saysymposium speakers.Encouraging innovation, the importance of welcomingexperts from outside the company and the need for disruptivethinking were key messages delivered by the renownedforward thinker Alf Rehn and Pink Gin’s owner Professor HansGeorg Näder in the first Baltic Yachts’ Symposium.Professor Hans Georg NäderMikael StrengellHenry Hawkinssolving ambition was also emphasised. Peter Kägi, the Swissautomotive expert, who has worked with Baltic Yachts ona number of projects, described how his own experienceinvolving the electric car had taught him to never give upwith an idea.Mikael Strengell, Baltic Yachts’ technical manager, enlightened the group on exciting new ways of controllingyachts using augmented reality delivered through visors inhead up displays.Alf Rehn emphasised that we must nurture innovation byencouraging creativity in the workforce and by respectingideas from across the company not just from the perceived‘bright stars’ at the top of management. The hot topic of foils on supersailing yachts was outlinedby Baltic Yachts’ head of research and development RolandKasslin, who put cases for and against the new technology.Professor Näder described his long held admiration for BalticYachts, for company founder Per-Göran Johansson and for hisdetermination 44 years ago to build better yachts, which stillholds true today. He also described his belief that yachtingcan bring together the most important things in life – “Family, friends and love!”Feedback from the two-day symposium has been used to helpmove ideas at Baltic Yachts to the next level. “Encouragingpeople to think disruptively and welcoming those fromoutside the company with expert knowledge and great ideaswill be key drivers to taking Baltic Yachts forward to meet thedemands of clients,” said CEO Henry Hawkins. The importance of keeping Baltic Yachts’ doors open topeople outside the company with great ideas and problemThe next Baltic Yachts’ symposium will be held in2019.05AUTUMN 2017

Working closely with specialistcomposite engineers Gurit, the design and construction ofthe hull openings were completed to the satisfaction of theDNV-GL classification organisation.RECENTLY DELIVERED2017Throughout the yacht, surface finishes and textures play animportant role with materials used in unusual ways to createa tactile look. An eclectic mixture of stained oak joinery, metallic finishes and sumptuous velvets and leathers create awarm, inclusive ambience, despite the yacht’s size. The main feature of the interior is the attention to detail. Fromthe velvet-lined drawers, bespoke carpet and monogrammedclothes hangers, to the subtle differences in each of thebathrooms in the sand cast hand-finished hardware a newdetail is likely to catch the eye.“Working on Pink Gin has been a great and excitingchallenge. The new yacht is not so much an evolution of theprevious Pink Gin, but a revolution in design; a superyachtthat reflects the personality and passions of the owner,” saidMark Tucker of Design Unlimited.13AUTUMN 2017

With her 71- ton lifting keel by APM, 68m tall carbon mastfrom Rondal and a dramatic and unique study in interiordesign, Pink Gin demonstrates not only Baltic Yachts’ abilityto build to the very highest standards but also to worksuccessfully with experts from outside the company and thesuperyacht industry to meet the considerable challenges setby our clients.Oscar Vallejo, Pink Gin’s skipper and mate Alex Worleyreport that the enormous sloop performed well during hertrials in Finland where she was sailing in 25 knots of truewind and reaching her predicted sailing speeds with ease. The crew were also able to try Baltic’s Force Feedbacksteering, the electronic remote control system which doesaway with conventional cables or rods to link the wheel withthe rudder and instead uses electric rams controlled wirelessly. It also replicates the ‘feel’ of the yacht for the helmsman.RECENTLY DELIVERED15AUTUMN 2017

Her owners, who played amajor role in the overall concept and the interior design, were here at Baltic Yachts in Jakobstad in June to take part inthe celebrations marking the launch.A lot has been worked into her accommodation including astern garage for a tender and a well-equipped galley featuringa dumb waiter leading to the deck saloon. Superb interiorstyling, greatly inspired by the yacht’s owners, who workedclosely with Design Unlimited, features striking photographicstudies and unique stucco panelling made by a specialist inItaly, putting this bespoke yacht in a class of her own.Mani Frers, who is responsible for Bill and Me’s navalarchitecture, makes the interesting observation that as thespeed achieved by large sailing yachts now matches those ofmotor yachts, much can be learned from the two disciplinesto produce highly efficient hull forms.Frers has also studied recent commercial ship research, whichaims to make vessels as efficient as possible. This has led tothe motion of his motor yachts becoming less aggressive, which in turn has the unexpected effect of reducing motionRECENTLY DELIVEREDKey features on deck include a remarkable reflective glasssuperstructure housing the wheelhouse and saloon, deepbulwarks providing a well-protected, all-round walkwayand custom stainless steel work including unique 3D printedpushpit and pulpit design which enhances the yacht’scontemporary look. This is an advanced motor yacht which will set thestandard for further projects in this field from Baltic Yachts.17AUTUMN 2017

BALTIC YACHTS CREW PROFILEPink Gin Chief Engineer - Dale KrugerSouth African Dale left home for a year in 2006. “It’sbeen a very long year,” he says as he now takes upthe challenge of chief engineer aboard Pink Gin.As the Baltic 175 Pink Gin embarks on her first season ofsailing, the man responsible for keeping the plethora ofsystems running aboard the world’s biggest carbon fibresloop will be 31-year-old South African Dale Kruger.Self-taught engineer Dale has been with the Pink Ginprogramme since moving to Finland in October 2015so he’s seen almost every piece of equipment beinginstalled and has an intimate knowledge of the yacht’s1338hp V-12 MAN main engine and her two 90kWNorthern Lights generators. The yacht’s enormousmachinery room is where the very heartbeat of theyacht must be maintained.WIDE RANGE OF RESPONSIBILITYBut it’s not just the internal combustion engines he’soverseeing. A complex hydraulics system servingdozens of outlets, a mass of electronic equipment, the electrical supply, plumbing, pumps, sail furlingequipment and even the sewage system will comeunder Dale’s jurisdiction. It will be the biggest challengein his superyachting career to date.Dale was born and grew up in Matatiele a town deepin East Africa’s beautiful countryside in the foothills of thewestern Drakensberg and a long way from the nearestsea, the Indian Ocean. His father, an engineer, ran anautomobile workshop, something that would stand Dalein good stead later in life. When he did manage to getto the coast he spent a lot of time fishing and sailingwith friends. When the time came for university heheaded for Cape Town to study for a business degree. It didn’t work out and his father suggested he took timeINTERVIEWout to think about his future. On South Africa’s west coasthe came across a sailing school once run by Sunsailand got involved. Not long afterwards he decided tohead north to Palma Mallorca for a year. “It’s been along year,” said Dale, who hasn’t looked back! His first job was helping out in the engine room of the60m motor yacht Aviva, but when his visa ran out hereturned to South Africa to join a 42ft Robertson andCaine catamaran with some friends who delivered herto St Lucia. “I learned a lot as it took 32 days,” recalledDale.JOINED SCHOONER MARIETTEHe then travelled to the USA where he worked on a 62mmotor yacht as an engineer before joining the iconicHerreshoff schooner Mariette of 1915 aboard which helooked after the yacht’s twin Caterpillar diesel engines.“They were old, had no electrics and were absolutelyawesome!” said Dale who joined in the Caribbeanand crossed the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. While he was there he met his girlfriend Monica, nowhis wife, who invited him aboard the current Pink Gin’spredecessor where she was a stewardess for skipperHenry Hawkins. She had left Finland with Pink Ginwhen she was first launched.JOB ROTATION ENSURES FAMILY LIFEEnjoying his time with Pink Gin his move to the newproject was a seamless one. Now married withtwo young children, Savannah, 4 and Valentina,1, Dale and his family have settled in Jakobstad.Following Pink Gin’s departure from Jakobstad inthe summer Dale is preparing the yacht for anautumn in the Mediterranean and the MonacoYacht Show (27-30 September).Despite Pink Gin’s size, Dale explained thatthe design team had specified simple systemsalong the lines of the last Pink Gin so that thecrew would be familiar with them. Normally ayacht of this size would employ an engineer andan Electronic Technical Officer (ETO), but theteam have decided to employ two experiencedengineers on rotation, working eight weeks onand eight weeks off.So Nick Wilson from the UK shares the considerableengineering duties with Dale so that both of themcan spend time at home on a regular basis.Dale sees it as the ideal balance and is relishingPink Gin’s first season in the Mediterranean andbeyond.“When I saw the advances in big sail boats, the engineering, PLC technology, sensors andall that, I realised I need to get ahead,” saidDale who left Mariette and joined Pink Gin in2008.21AUTUMN 2017
