ART LITERACYArt Literacy ArtistSalvador Dalí1904 - 1989Surrealist PainterApril’s featured artist is Salvador Dalí, the famous Spanish surrealist artist. An unruly child,Dalí showed an early aptitude for art and began painting in oils at the age of 8. At the youngage of 21, he had his first one-man exhibit. Dalí was one of the founders of the Surrealistmovement. Surrealism is a style of art that attempts to combine the conscious world with theunconscious to form a “super-reality” or the surreal. Dalí liked to say that his paintings “handcolored photographs of the subconscious.” He rejected logical thought and would combine oddand unrelated objects in the same painting. After students examine the elements of surrealism and the use of line to create space in Dalí’swork, students will create their own surreal self-portrait.If you would like to know more about what your student is learning in art lit, a brief summaryof the Dalí lesson is presented at the end of this newsletter. Classroom volunteers are alwayswelcome to support their child’s art lit class. Please contact your teacher or classroom art litvolunteer for date and time.
