Meeting Minutes – April 5, 2021Organ and tissue donors save lives, restoresight, and improve the quality of life forrecipients across Illinois every day. InIllinois, about 4,700 people wait fortransplants of all kinds — kidney, liver,heart, lungs, small intestines, and pancreas.These six organs can save the lives of asmany as nine individuals. Donated tissuessuch as corneas, bones, ligaments, and skincan help possibly 25 or more people andvastly improve life for them . There is no cost to thedonor’s family. A person must be at least 16years old to join the registry. There is nomaximum tml#mythsTo join the registry, go to:organ/tissue donations.The state maintains the Illinois DonorRegistry, the database of individuals inIllinois who have said yes to donation,which now has more than 7 millionregistrants. Several memberstook advantage of the offer.Program:Jean Leonardintroduced ourspeaker, MelissaLemay, TuscolaSchool District nurse.She has been in theposition for 11 yearsand spreads her timebetween the three Tuscola Schools. Melissashared with us a typical busy day for her atthe schools.Some of Melissa’s responsibilities andduties include: Assist staff with BP checks, readingTB skin tests, flu shot clinics,teaching CPR to staff/coaches. Administer hearing and visionscreening for students, and reportresults to public health. Coordinate two dental clinics. Coordinate the Girl Talk and BoyTalk for 5th Graders on hygiene andpuberty. Teach the Girl Talk. Collect and assure that all requiredhealth exams have been done, and filea report with the Illinois State Boardof Education. Verify athletes completed sports’physicals and are approved for sports. Assist students with illinesses andinjuries, advising parents andreferring to a doctor when needed. Train staff on epi-pen, allergies,diabetes, seisures, etc. Do lice checks and sometimes treat atschool. Administer medications. Teaches nursing students from UICon Tuesdays and Thursdays as theyshadow Melissa.Flexibility and a caring heart is what makesMelissa so great in her job! The communityis very lucky to have her.Melissa has between 1,000-1,100 students inher care ranging in ages 3-21, about 120staff/teachers, and about 30 coaches. ShePage 4 of 11

Ifanyone is interested in serving as a clubdirector or vice-president which leads topresident in two years, contact Janet Butler.Jerry Leonard shared photosand experiences from Jeanand Jerry’s February 2020trip to Iceland. The groupincluded Kevin Lighty fromWCIA. They wanted to seethe Northern Lights (Auroraborealis). They did see theNorthern Lights, but they were hoping for amore colorful display.The group flew into the capital, Reykjavik.Iceland’s population is about 357,000.Iceland is mostly dormant volcanoes andglaciers. Residents rely on geothermalheating from hot springs. Iceland is knownfor its unique breed of horses and hot dogs.Jerry’s highlight was a dip in a man-madehot spring. Jerry and Jean had a wonderfultrip though it was more snowy and colderthan expected.Kiwanis One Day Service Project – TheBoard is working scheduling a spring-cleanfor possible the Ervin Park Prairielandplayground, the Nunn Scout Building,and/or the RISE Wellness.Club Foundation PayPal Account - TheBoard approved a not-for-profit PayPalaccount for the club’s 501c3 foundation.Once set-up, members and non-memberswill be able to make unrestricted anddesignated donations to the foundation forthe club’s Facebook page and/or website.Members CANNOT pay dues. This is forfoundation donations only.What the Leonards were hoping to see.More like what they saw.Page 5 of 11

Meeting Minutes – April 26, 2021Program: AttendanceBrad Halbrook is a smallbusiness owner, farmer,and family man. From2012 until 2015 he servedas State Representative inthe 110th District. He isnow serving in the 102ndDistrict. Club Foundation donations can be madeat the club’s website and its Facebook page.Members CANNOT pay dues through thisaccount.TCHS Key Club Update – Linda Damlershared some of the activities that Key Clubhas done during the 2020/2021 school year.Key Clubbers made dog toys for the animalshelter, made bookmarks donated to locallibraries, made virtual St. Jude’s cards, madepoppies for VFW, made Valentines forTCHS teachers and staff, made Valentinesfor nursing home residents, and more. As athank you for all they were able to do thisschool year, Faculty Advisor will be givingeach Key Clubber a 10 gift certificate toFlesor’s Candy Kitchen provided by ourclub/foundation. This is pretty remarkablesince Key Club was on hold for severalmonths due to the pandemic.Brad is fiscal and social conservative. Dueto the pandemic, the Illinois GeneralAssembly has not met many times sinceearly 2020. Committee meetings were heldvirtually. He feels that virtual meetings arebetter than none, but thinks that meetingvirtually limits discussion.Brad discussed different legislative bills thatmay or may not go forward. He alsodiscussed problems created by the 2020census results being late.probablySeptember instead of the usual April/Maytimeframe.Brad will continue to advocate forgovernment reforms, reduced taxes, and jobcreation legislation.Brad and his wife Linda live inShelbyville. They have two children. Theyown and operate a small farming operation.Page 6 of 11

In Memory of Betty LeonardTuscola Kiwanis ClubJune 17, 1932 – April 17, 2021Betty graduated from Atwood High School in 1950 and married GeorgeLeonard in September of the same year. She had two children, Steve Leonarddeceased and Linda Brewer of Tuscola. She had 5 grandchildren, 6 greatgrandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.She was an amazing Kiwanian with seventeen years of Perfect Attendance.She kept us up-to-date on the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren,and other family members. Betty was a member of the Tuscola ImmanuelLutheran Church and the Keenager’s Kitchen Band.She was a beloved member of our Kiwanis Club and our community.We will miss her!Page 7 of 11

David Butler seconded the motion and it was approved.Copy of Board meeting minutes are included in Board Meeting Documents under“Board Reports” in the “Members Area.”2.Secretary’s Monthly Reports – Janet Butler had emailed Board members copies ofthe monthly Tuscola Volunteer Hours report and the Kiwanis International monthlyreport for their review. Hours reported were 573 service and 311 fundraising hoursfor a total of 884. Val Morgan made a motion to approve the reports. Tim Hoelseconded the motion, and it was approved. Copies of Secretary Reports are includedin Board Meeting Documents under “Board Reports” in the “Members Area.”3.Treasurer’s Monthly Reports – Candy Hudson had emailed Board members a copyof the club and foundation monthly treasurer’s reports ending April 14, 2021. Thecurrent balance for the club was 11,237.98 and the foundation balance was 17,997.53. David Butler made a motion to approve the reports. Dennis Oppermanseconded the motion, and it was approved. Copies of Treasurer Reports are includedin Board Meeting Documents under “Board Reports” in the “Members Area.”Janet Butler provided a summary of the Fish Fry fundraiser: Income 3,925.00Expenses 1,107.60 for a net gain of 2,817.40.Page 8 of 11

New Donation Requests – NoneOLD BUSINESS6. Shred/Re-Cycle Service Project – Dave Morgan reported that date-wise the shredvendor may have June 19 or July 10 open for our project. Dave will report further atthe May Board meeting.7. Interclub Visits/Club COVID Rules – No changes. Tabled to May Board meeting.8. Electronic/Online Sign-ups/Donation Pledges – Ian Rominger summarized the processto use PayPal for donations to the club’s foundation. A PayPal account is not requiredto donate. After discussion, Ian made a motion to establish a PayPal account for theclub’s foundation to facilitate donations to the foundation from members and others.Carol Burwash seconded the motion and it was approved. For our 501c3organization, the cost would be 2.2% 0.30 per transaction. There would be no feesfor setup, statements, withdrawals, or cancellation. Any funds for the club’sadministrative account such as dues cannot be paid through PayPal since the clubitself is a 501c4 organization. Janet & David Butler with the assistance of TreasurerCandy Hudson will set up the account. A “donate” button will be added to the clubwebsite by David Butler and Facebook page by Tim Hoel. David will set up afoundation email address: paypal@tuscolakiwanis.org. Whenever a donation ismade, Treasurer Candy Hudson and Secretary Janet Butler will be notified fromPayPal. Candy will move PayPal account funds, usually monthly, to the clubfoundation checking account. Janet Butler will send a personalized thank you/taxletter to the donor.Page 9 of 11

NEW BUSINESS9. Peace Meal Volunteer Badges – Val Morgan said that when volunteers deliver lunchesto the Peace Meal clients, there is nothing to tell the client that the delivery people arereally from Tuscola Peace Meals. Val was hoping we would fund 6-10 badges forLynnita Brown to provide to each day’s volunteers. The badges would be “generic”saying something like: Tuscola Peace Meals Volunteer. After discussion, JanetButler made a motion to approve funds up to 125.00 for the purchase of the badges.Dennis Opperman seconded the motion and it was approved.10.TCHS Long Jump Track Project Inquiry – Ian Rominger relayed a message fromCoach Hornaday regarding a project to pour new concrete for the Long Jump trackbefore the new top material was installed. Regardless of the club’s action, the projectwill be completed with school district funds. No motion was put on the table so noaction was taken. Ian will advise Coach Hornaday.11.2021 Tuscola Summer Speech Clinic – On May 7, 2020, the Board approved a 450.00 donation if Kathy Fair procured the remaining funds to hold a 20-studentclinic. Due to COVID, the clinic was not held. Kathy wanted confirmation that thedonation would be made in 2021, and asked if we would still donate if the clinic wasonly 10 students. After discussion, Janet Butler made a motion that the 450 donationcommitment would still be honored for 2021for a clinic of at least 10 students andKathy Fair raises the remaining funds for the clinic. Carol Burwash seconded themotions and it was approved. Janet will advise Kathy of the decision.12.2021/2022 Club Elections – Janet Butler made a motion to designate the club’s May17 meeting for voting for the 2021/2022 club officers and directors. David Butlerseconded the motion and it was approved. Janet is taking the lead on findingcandidates for the two club director positions and the vice-president. The Boarddiscussed possible candidates for Janet to approach. Janet will present the slate ofcandidates to the Board at its May 12 meeting.13. Kiwanis One Day Service Project – Last year, club members provided a SpringClean-up for the Nunn Scout Building and the Prairieland Playground at Ervin Park.Tim Hoel agreed to check with Jeremy Leonard regarding the needs of the NunnScout Building, Dave Morgan to check with the City of Tuscola regarding theplayground, and Ian Rominger to check with RISE Behavioral Health & Wellness.Tentatively the Board discuss a date around mid-May. Tim, Dave, and Ian will reportback to the Board via email so the project date can be confirmed before the MayBoard meeting.Page 10 of 11
