Wayne Allenreceives Hall of Fame Award (page 8)Volume 35 Number 4Fall 2021Dinner Celebration – November 82021 HALL OF FAMEINDUCTEES ANNOUNCEDOn November 8 at the downtown Fort Smith Wyndham Hotel,a special evening of recognition will be held for five outstandingindividuals who will honored by the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club.The 2021 Hall of Fame inductees include: Chris Whitt, Dr. John Cross,Bennie Wesphal, Eric Burnett and Judge Stephen Tabor.A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner and programat 7:00 p.m. Honorees will be recognized with a special video tribute.Several previous inductees will be in attendance.Medical students from the Arkansas College of OsteopathicMedicine volunteer their services during a COVID vaccineclinic held at the Stephens Boys & Girls Club on August 13.COVID Vaccine ClinicsProvided at StephensBoys & Girls Club140 COVID vaccines were administered bymedical professionals to the community duringspecial clinics held at the Stephens Boys & GirlsClub on July 23 and August 13. Through the effortsof AHEC, ARCOM and community health volunteers,participants were able to get free health screeningsalong with the vaccines.“We were happy to host the event” said RonekaGrooms, unit director at Stephens. Free haircuts,food boxes and back packs were also provided.DeSigner Barber College students helped withhaircuts.Basic health screenings for families provideearly detections of potential risks and concerns.Early treatment can reduce possible complicationsand increase better health outcomes.The community event was sponsored by:UAMS, Stonewood Eye Care, Arkansas United,Palma’s, Fort Smith Adult Education, and StateRepresentative Jay Richardson.Chris Whitt – a business owner and entrepreneur who has served on theBoys & Girls Club board for 21 years. Whitt was a Club member as achild and attended Kiwanis Camp, which helped spark his love for theoutdoors. His past board service in the community includes the UnitedWay, Lincoln Childcare and Habitat for Humanity. Chris has generouslysupported capital projects at Trinity School, Hunts Park, Goldtrap Boys& Girls Club and Evans Boys & Girls Clubs.Dr. John Cross – Retired Sociology professor at Oklahoma StateUniversity, he was a champion Golden Gloves boxer at the Boys Cluband served as Unit Director of Jeffrey. Dr. Cross credits the Club forguiding him into his career in Education. He is a member of the SeminoleTribe of Oklahoma and has worked with several college groups regardingNative American culture.Eric Burnett – Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Arkansas TechUniversity and a United Way board member, Burnett is a long-timehigh school basketball coach who has captured two state titles with theNorthside Grizzlies. He grew up attending the Stephens Boys Club on adaily basis. He’s served the FSBGC as a volunteer mentor and is a boardmember for the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association.Bennie Westphal – appointed by the Governor to serve on the ArkansasGame & Fish Commission, Westphal is a past FSBGC board presidentand has served on the FSBGC board for 14 years. He grew up as a Clubmember and played football for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Westphal isinvolved in several business ventures and has served as a board memberfor the Mercy Foundation, UAFS Foundation, U.S. Marshals Museum.Judge Steve Tabor – Circuit Judge and former Prosecuting Attorney,Tabor helped establish Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Court. Heworked as a program director at Evans Boys Club while studying for thebar exam. A graduate of Arkansas State, he received his Juris Doctoratefrom U of A Law School. He’s a past FSBGC Alumni board presidentand coached several ball teams at the Club.

Acknowledgment cards are mailed to the families of those memorialized and/or honored, anddonors receive a tax deduction receipt. The endowment was created in 1940. For the past 81 years, interest income fromthe Endowment has been used solely for Club operations. Burns was a volunteer in the Boys & Girls Club “LeanOn Me” mentoring program. His three sons all excelledin sports programs at the Boys & Girls Club. Kim was anavid fan and attended countless ballgames at the Club.Kim is survived by his wife Dazzle, sons Khayyam, Kodiand Kenric and five grandchildren.Joel Gist – age 36, passed away on July 21, 2021 in FortSmith. Gist was a former Boys & Girls Club memberand volunteer coach. He was co-owner and operator ofFour Aces Landscaping Services and a member of FirstUnited Methodist Church. Joel is survived by his wifeKerri; parents Lucy and Steve Gist; brothers Jeff and JohnGist. Joel was an avid sports fan and loved watching theRazorbacks and Dallas Cowboys. He is remembered forhis kindness, love for animals and big smile.Cornelius “Hanky” Roberts – age 58 passed awayon September 5, 2021 from complications of COVID.Hanky grew up participating at the Boys & Girls Club andattended Kiwanis Summer Camp. He worked at the Clubwhile in high school and college. Roberts graduated fromNorthside High in 1981 and completed Bachelors andMasters degrees from the University of Central Arkansas.He taught high school history in Little Rock, Brinkley andMarianna. He loved coaching and officiating basketball,football and baseball. He is survived by his motherPauline Novak Bateman and siblings Carlessa Davis,Frank Bateman and Tonya Novak.Michael LeJong – died on July 19, 2021 at the age of 49.LeJong was lead architect (MAHG) on the Evans Boys &Girls Club renovation project in 2003. His passing camefrom a result of COVID. Because ofFriery’s dedicated work, the event raised 5,200.For Tim Higgins, the past 3 years has been acrazy roller coaster ride. The former Evans Boys& Girls Club unit director was diagnosed withpancreatitis in November 2018, which led to thediscovery of Tim having only one kidney.Dialysis became a three day a week - fourhours per treatment way of life. Tim was unable tocontinue his work with the Boys & Girls Club andwas placed on a kidney transplant list.In June, doctors in Tulsa successfully performedthe kidney transplant for Tim. He is now gainingstrength by the day and keeping his spirits high.Higgins no longer requires dialysis treatments.

Page 4“Beat”Fall 2021Crystal Bridges Mobile ArtMakes Stop at Jeffrey BGC2021 Marilyn Foster PoetryContest Winners NamedCertificates and cash prizes were presented to the top threefinishers in the 2021 Marilyn Foster Poetry Contest. “My FavoriteThing to do in the Summer” was the theme of the competition.Club members for all four units participated, and those enteringthe contest were required to write their creative thoughts in 25lines or less.Marilyn Foster has sponsored the poetry contest for the past26 years. She also sponsors an annual essay and photographycontest at the Club. The annual photography contest is held in the Spring.CB to You Mobile Art Lab provided a two-daylearning workshop at Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club onSeptember 23 & 24. The Crystal Bridges Museumof American Art sponsored the traveling pop-up artexperience.Energizing young people in the community throughthe power of art is the mission of CB to You. Theevent featured regional artist from across NorthwestArkansas. Pop-up artistic peformances included PapaRap’s amazing drum line, poetry with Shannon McGilland storytelling by Dextra Rodriquez. Craig Colorussopeformed on the electric guitar. His explorative workextends beyond sound and utilizes light and sculpture.Club members were given the opportunity toparticipate in printmaking, acrylic painting, mosaics andvarious other art projects. Professional artists leadingthe sessions were Lakisha Bradley, Jeffrey Cantu andJunli Song.From art making and story circles to artist talks andlive demonstrations, the CB to You mobile art programwas fun and inspirational to our Boys & Girls Clubparticipants.CAMPING IN THE SOUTHby October Cortez – 1st placeMarilyn Foster Poetry ContestI wake to the sound of birds chirping,the water rushing, the fire crackling,the smell of food on the fire sizzlingmy mother and father cooking.I hear laughing, my brothers playing.I step from my tentmy feet touching the grass softly.I felt as if I was walkinginto a different universe,the warmth hugging my body like a blanket,the smell of greenery around me.I look to see creatures of all sortsit really is a different world I say.We sit and eat, then start our day.I jumped right in,a shiver went through my body.the water was icy cold,my bathing suit clinging to my bodysplashing and swimming,next thing I know the day endedand a new one began.

Fall 2021“Beat”Page 5UNITED WAY DAY OF CARINGPROVIDES MANPOWER BOOSTWith more than 500 volunteers participating, the annualUnited Way Day of Caring was held on Sept. 16 at more than20 agency sites. Sponsors for Day of Caring were OG&E,First National Bank and Baptist Health.The event began with a kickoff breakfast held downtownat the Riverfront Amphitheatre. Mayor George McGillpraised the group for its impact on the community. UnitedWay board chair Suzy Wilson announced the pacesettercampaign total reached 651,204.Day of Caring projects at the Fort Smith Boys & GirlsClub included painting, landscaping, hauling brush, and reorganizing storage areas. “We love to have our United Wayvolunteers helping at the Clubs” said FSBGC director ofoperations Jason Morland. “Their services really make a bigdifference at our facilities” he added.At the Goldtrap unit, volunteers helped paint the fencingthat surrounds the caboose. Day of Caring volunteers atJeffrey worked on landscaping, while volunteers at theEvans and Stephens units helped with re-organizing storageareas.The United Way has provided financial support to theFort Smith Boys & Girls Club since 1928. Their annualcampaign raises funding for 33 community agencies, andUnited Way hosts several events throughout the year toimpact the community, including Fill the Bus, Power of thePurse, Adams Pro Tour Golf Classic, Touch a Truck, TysonSummer Intern program, Rising on the River, 100 FamiliesInitiative and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. ABack to School Bash with “fill the bus” items was held atthe United Way office on August 13. The annual programprovides school supplies for local students.Recently, the United Way announced the naming ofAngie Ruth as interim CEO. Eddie Lee Herndon, whoserved as United Way CEO for the past six years, acceptedthe position of Community Affairs manager with OG & E.Ruth works along with other United Way professionals SheaFoldvary, Mitzi Little and Carrie Terry in the Fort Smithoffice.For several years, the Fort Smith Area United Wayhas been instrumental is addressing critical needs in theRiver Valley community, including the COVID pandemic,flood disaster relief, hunger, volunteer engagement, youthactivities, senior citizen support, literacy for pre-schoolers,clothing, transportation and shelter.Summer interns, sponsored by Tyson, have worked invarious United Way agencies during the past two years.College student Hunter Ruth worked as an intern at theEvans Boys Girls Club for the past two summers. Hunterattends the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.United Way Day of Caring volunteers work on an outdoorproject at Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club. The weather waswarm and sunny for the Sept. 16 annual event.Annual Halloween FSBGCHaunted House Set For OctoberFSBGC staff member Jason Morland has recruitedseveral volunteers and sponsors to help host theannual Haunted House, located at 114 North 14th St.Fort Smith. The fundraiser will be open from 8 p.m. til11 p.m. on October 9, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30. This willbe the fourth year in a row at the North 14th location.Price of admission is 15 and tickets can be purchasedon-line or at the ticket booth located at the site. Wayne Allenhas been recognized as a 2021 Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fameinductee. Allen, who resides in Houston, Texas, was presented the inductionaward in October. The award announcement was made at the annual FSBGCAlumni & Friends BBQ.Allen is the retired Chairman and CEO of ConocoPhillips Corporation.He grew up in Fort Smith and attended Trusty School. His father died whenAllen was 5 years old, and after his mother remarried, the family moved toOregon. When his stepfather and older brother went off to war, Allen andhis sister were raised by their grandmother in Fort Smith.Joining the Fort Smith Boys Club to play sports, Allen found enjoymentplaying in the basketball program and hanging out at the Club. Although hemoved to Oklahoma at age 15, he never forgot the many positive experienceshe had at the Wheeler Avenue Boys Club. That’s why he agree to serve onthe national Board of Governors for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.Attending Oklahoma State University, Allen completed a bachelorsdegree in mechanical engineering and masters degree in industrialengineering. After a brief stint in the Army, Allen went to work for Phillips66 and was eventually named director of production for the Europe-Africadivision. In 1988 he was appointed corporate vice-president and in 1994 hewas promoted to CEO. He retired from ConocoPhillips in 1999.W. Wayne Allenretired ConocoPhillips CEOThe W. “Beat”Fall 2021Page 9FSBGC Fishing DerbySet for Nov. 8 at Wells LakeA fun family fishing event for Boys & Girls Clubmembers is scheduled for Saturday, November 8 atWells Lake, located at the Janet Huckabee Center inFort Smith. The FSBGC fishing derby will take placefrom 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. and include free lunch.With help from the Arkansas Game & FishCommission, the event will offer special taggedfish for cash prizes. Wells Lake will be stocked withcatfish and bream, which will increase the chancesfor young people catching fish. Free kids fishing poleswill be distributed, thanks to a donation from Lil’ AnglerCompany.“We are excited to be a part of this special event”said FSBGC director of operations Jason Morland. “Thiswill give young people from throughout the communitythe opportunity to catch fish” he added. The 3.1 mile courseincluded hydration stations and color blasts for runners.Colorful 5K Run Nets 7,000 for Boys & Girls ClubThrough the dedicated efforts of Club volunteer AutumnHarris, 141 runners braved the late summer heat byparticipating in the 2021 5K Colorful Run held at BenGeren Park on August 28. The event included 1st, 2ndand 3rd place medals for various age groups along withseveral door prizes. The run promoted healthy lifestylesand family fun while raising money for a good cause.Harris, who has children that are members of the Boys& Girls Club, organized the event early in the year. The Steelers wonthe game 23-16.Norwood Makes Debut WithNFL Pittsburgh SteelersFor a rookie in the NFL, the season can be extremelystressful. First trying to secure a place on the final roster of53, Then, learning a pro defensive scheme. And most of all,trying to perform at the highest level possible when calledupon by your coaches.Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member Tre’Norwood made his NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills onSeptember 12. The 7th round draft pick from OklahomaUniversity and Northside High School had 4 tackles in hisvery first professional game.The Steelers have leaned on Norwood to help theirdefense.
