We of course have regular Shabbatcelebrations, but no additional holidays. After all the celebrations in thepreceding month of Tishri, the Cheshvan lull is welcome. It gives us a chance toreflect on the messages and demands made on us throughout our Days of Aweand our Sukkot and Simchat Torah celebrations. Cheshvan also gives us thetime to perhaps put into action some of the changes we promised to make duringour reflective High Holyday experience. But Cheshvan also gives us the chanceto move forward, to try something new, to expand our views a bit about we canaccomplish when we have some unimpeded time.In the Midwest, this is a time to take walks outside to see the beautiful autumnalcolors. We watch the birds begin to move to their winter homes, or to preparetheir nests for winter. The squirrels are busy scavenging all the nuts fallingsfrom trees. And we know as the days shorten and the weather cools, thatanother winter looms ahead. Some years these changes are very gradual, andsome years, they seem so abrupt. This is so like our lives. Some years seem topass quickly, others seem to drag on endlessly. Some people are good andwelcome the new possibilities that changing the status quo bring. Some peoplealways yearn for the “good ol’ days” when they thought everything was justperfect. Most people fall somewhere in between these attitudes, needing time toadjust to changes around them.In a commentary on Yom Kippur Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner, a Rabbi in Poland andthe United States wrote: The truth of the matter is that the power of change isthe greatest innovation, after the wonder of the creation of Heaven andEarth,” (Pachad Yitzchak, Yom Kippur 1:8). The power to change is what makesthe work we did during Tishri possible. The High Holyday prayer “U’netanehTokef” emphasizes the power of change. The prayer says: if we do these threeright things, Repentance, Prayer and Righteous Deeds, we can change even themost severe decree against us.Cheshvan is the time to reflect and to move forward. To accept the changes inthe natural world, and to make changes in our own lives. We can choose tofollow the pattern of the weather, making some gradual changes, or we can makedecisive immediate change. But no matter which style suits us better, change iscoming in nature and for all of us.We hope and pray that most of the things that will alter our lives will be positive, healthy, and happy. We pray for the strength to overcome the difficult timessurrounded by loving family, community, and friends.May all of us embrace the power of innovation and change to help us continue toenjoy the wonders of our world, our life and our community.Wishing you all a beautiful month of Cheshvan.Sincerely,HUNTER THOMASWILLIAM TRACHTMANSAMIE WINICKRabbi Paula Jayne Winnig Interim Rabbi, Congregation Rodef SholomRABBI FRANK MULLER, D.D.RABBI EMERITUS2

A Message from Our Interim PresidentDear Congregants,It’s a new year- a new beginning- 5782. As we emerge from a time of deepintrospection and repentance, we enter a time when we put into action all thevows we have made. The days grow short, but our ability to spread light in theworld lengthens.Opportunities to spread that light abound. Each moment of each day provides us with opportunitiesto seek joy- joy in volunteering, joy in reaching out to others, or in simply saying thank you. There are 15 Hebrew words for joy, and the word joy is found 100 times in the Torah, but what isjoy? My favorite definition defines joy as “a conscious commitment to have a sense of gratitude andcontentment regardless of life’s challenges.” Joy comes from within; it is something to be sharedwith others. As we look around us, we can see many things that are positive in our lives. Our congregation’s homeis a beautiful and historic synagogue, but it is those who enter its portals who provide a spiritualconnection. It serves as an anchor in the community and the spiritual resting place for Shabbatservices and life-cycle events. As a congregation, we breathe life into a building. Our prayers rise up in unison and are joined bythe prayers of Jews around the world. We are a small congregation in a small community, but a partof a bonded family committed to making the world a better place for generations to come. As welight our sabbath candles, we both remember and observe- our history, our tradition, our covenantalpromises. As we go out into this cool, crisp air of October, let us find reasons for joy in our daily lives, and let usfind ways to make a difference in the lives of others.Wishing you peace, health, and joy in this new year.Nancy BurnettPresident, Congregation Rodef Sholom3
