Each of you has worked hard to get thispoint, with the guidance and support of family, friends, and Lamar University (LU) faculty and staff. Thiscommencement ceremony has three purposes; the firstis to formally celebrate your achievement, the secondis to thank those who helped you along the way, andthe third is to mark the beginning of next phase of yourlife. When you walk out of these doors as LU graduates, you will set new goals, and I know youwill pursue them with the same or even higher levels of dedication. My wish for you is thatyou set the right goals. Set them high enough that you must work both smart and hardto achieve them, and then feel the satisfaction that comes from seeing your work andpreparation pay off. Youhave taken a huge step toward fulfilling your lifelonggoals and dreams, and there are many amazingopportunities that lie ahead for you.Simon Sinek (2009) stated, “ achievement comeswhen you pursue and attain what you want; successcomes when you are clear in pursuit of WHY you wantit” (Sinek, 2009). It is my hope that as you reflect onyour learning journey over the past several years, youhave been able to identify your passion and inspiration along the way. If you have, Iencourage you to articulate your passion and share your inspiration in everything you doand every decision you make, and most importantly, learn to inspire others the way youhave been inspired. As you navigate the next steps in your journey, learn how to turn your greatest struggleinto your largest gain. Life will consistently test your perseverance, but grit and persistence will helpyou move the needle on your wildly important goals. Try to lead as you serve others, andspend time building relationships with all kinds of people, especially with folks that aredifferent than you. ACADEMIC REGALIAThe academic regalia worn at American university exercises, originated in the Middle Ages. The oldestuniversities grew out of church schools, and both faculty and students were regarded as part of the clergy.Hence, they wore robes as part of their costume, borrowed largely from the monastic dress of their day. Today, there is a Code on Academic Costume, detailing appropriate regalia attire. The cap, the square mortarboard in Americanuniversities for undergraduate and master’sstudents and a round, short, flat velvet cap fordoctoral students. The cap is always black andshould match the material of the robe. The gown is usually black. The bachelor’s gownhas pointed sleeves and the master’s gown haslong pouch-like sleeves. Doctoral gowns are facedwith velvet down the front and three bars of velvetacross each sleeve. The hood, worn around the neck and hanging inthe back, is the principal emblem of the natureand source of the degree held. The colors in thehood lining are the colors of the school conferringthe degree. The color of the border indicates thescholarly field of study.MASTER HOOD COLORSWHITEMA in EnglishMA in HistoryMA in Teaching Spanish as a ForeignLanguageLIGHT BLUEMED in Applied Digital LearningMED in Clinical Mental HealthMED in Counseling & DevelopmentMED in Digital Learning and LeadingMED in AdministrationMED in Educational TechnologyLeadershipMED in Special EducationMED in Teacher LeadershipEdD in Educational LeadershipPINKMaster in MusicSALMONMPH in Public HealthDRABMBA in Business AdminMS in AccountingMS in Management InformationSystemsORANGEME-Chemical EngineeringME-Civil EngineeringME-Electrical EngineeringME-Industrial EngineeringME-MEchanical EngineeringMEM-Industrial EngineeringMES-Chemical EngineeringMES-Electrical EngineeringMES-Industrial EngineeringMS-Environmental StudiesPEACOCK BLUEMPA in Public Administration18SCIENCE GOLDMS in BiologyMS in ChemistryMS in Computer ScienceMS in MathematicsMS in Speech Language PathologyMS in Deaf Studies Deaf EducationMS in Applied PsychologyMS in KinesiologyMS in Health PromotionMS in Family and Consumer SciencesMS in NutritionMS in Criminal JusticeMD GREENDoctor of AudiologyAPRIOCOTMSN in Nursing AdministrationMSN in Nursing EducationPHDDark BlueLAMAR UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT SUMMER 2021
