4British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce21 January 2010The British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce held its first boardmeeting outside of KL city at the University of NottinghamMalaysia Campus. The board members took the time to talk toacademics and students, at a social gathering hosted by theGraduate School, about possible research projects, employabilityand life in Malaysia.Member companies range in size from British and Malaysian SMEs to multi national corporations, and include some of the world’s leading organisationssuch as: AXA, BAE Systems, BP, Etihad, Flowcrete, Genting, Guinness,Hilton, HSBC, Laura Ashley, Malaysia Airlines, UNMC, Prudential, RoyalBank of Scotland, Rolls Royce, Shangri La, Shell, Standard Chartered,Tesco, TNT, UMW, YTL and many, many others.BMCC Board Members meet with students and staff at UNMCBMCC Board of Directors meet at UNMC

5SEAEU Scientific Experts MeetingQuantification of Ecosystem Function: Challenges and Benefits28 29 JANUARY 2010The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campushosted the SEAEU workshop at the Chulan TowerFacility. The workshop speakers were selected fortheir disciplinary expertise and/or their specialistknowledge of ecosystems of the SEA region. The mixof participants was unique and reflectedmultidisciplinary capacities in at least seven Europeanand SEA countries. The objective of the meeting wasto use this expertise to build critical mass around two researchable challenges’ with specific reference to theSEA region. A direct consequence of the workshopwas the development of a number of project proposalsfor EU funding.The workshop was designed to establish a Community of Practice’ of researchers andstakeholders working with SEA ecosystemsand agro ecosystems.SEA EU NET is a project within the EuropeanCommission’s 7th Framework Programme.The four year project started in January 2008and currently has 25 key S&T institutions (17participants and 8 additional members of the steeringboard) from Europe and Southeast Asia. The strategicobjective of SEA EU NET was "integrating andstrengthening the EU ASEAN Science andTechnology Dialogue through coordination andsupporting activities”.Nearly 100 delegates attended the workshopSEA EU NET actively increases the quality, quantity,profile and impact of bi regional Science andTechnology (S&T) cooperation between the tenmember countries of the Association of South EastAsian Nations (ASEAN) and the Member andAssociated Member States of the European Union(EU). In particular, SEA EU NET aims to increaseand strengthen SEA participation in the FP7programmes (the EU’s funding programme forinternational research and development).Prof. Sayed Azam Ali, Meeting Coordinator said, “Byhosting the meeting and designing its structure,UNMC colleagues had a unique opportunity tonetwork with key researchers at the interface betweennatural and managed Ecosystems.”HE Vincent Piket, Head of Delegation and EU Ambassadorwelcoming workshop participants

UNMC has playedhost to senior academics, ministers and industry leaders as it continues to interact with the wider community andfoster links and partnerships throughout Malaysia and further 1023/2/2010VC Prof David Greenaway delivered a guest lecture at the GEP ConferenceVC Prof David Greenaway and PVC Knowledge Transfer Prof Chris Rudd were joined by AlexKnox from Dyson on a tour of UNMCVP Research Prof Sayed Azam Ali visited MAFC in PuchongMinister of Higher Education Y.B. Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Bin Nordin visited UNMC andwas hosted by Puan Maraton YahyaVP Research Prof Sayed Azam Ali visited MPOB where he was hosted by Datuk Dr. Mohd BasriWahidJulie Thomas from the VC’s Office visited the Semenyih Campus and delivered a “Minute Takingand Best Practice” training course for administratorsGraduate School Trip to the UKGraduate School Malaysia Campus members Christopher Hill,Deepa Kumari, Anita Pathma and Callistus Fernandez spent twoweeks on the UK Campus in March 2010 working with colleaguesfrom the UK Graduate School. The aim of the trip was to promotebest practice, improve campus connectivity and gain a broaderunderstanding of the overall Graduate School direction and ethos.Over the course of the trip the team members attended researchtraining courses, staff development workshops, social events,student presentations, visited Graduate Centre's at University Park,Jubilee Campus and Sutton Bonnington, took part in a day longpresentation for Iain Cameron, Head of RCUK’s Careers andDiversity Unit and worked with the VC’s Office.A key aspect of the two week trip was an Administrators AwayDay held at the East Midlands Conference Centre. Deepa Kumari,Anita Pathma and Phoebe Zhang, China Campus Graduate School,joined the full UK team for the first ever collective Away Day.Deepa Kumari and Anita Pathma said, “it was a great learning ex perience, resulting in us adapting UK standards and practices ineveryday management of the Graduate School Malaysia Campus.”Graduate School Administrators from Malaysia, Chinaand UK Campuses attend an Away Day at the EastMidlands Conference Centre
