2011EDUCATIONThe UNMC College of Public Health(COPH) received accreditation for afive-year term extending to Dec. 31,2016, from the Council on Educationfor Public Health.COPH student enrollment increased33 percent to 147, and included 34PhD students, 89 master of publichealth students and 24 certificate ofpublic health students.COPH faculty developed two newmaster of public health degreeswith concentrations in health policyand social marketing and healthcommunication.COPH faculty in the departmentsof biostatistics and epidemiologydeveloped and received approval forPhD programs in biostatistics andepidemiology with the first cohorts ofstudents enrolling in fall 2012.COPH faculty developed and receivedapproval for a master of science inemergency preparedness with thefirst cohort of students enrolling infall 2012. 2011The SAHP Cytotechnology ProgramDirector was named chair of theAmerican Society for Cytotechnologywebinar committee and was appointedto the Cytotechnology ProgramReview Committee that accredits allcytotechnology education programs inthe United States.Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI)graduated its first PhD students inapplied behavior analysis through theMSIA program.MMI faculty and staff published 74scientific articles and/or chapters inpeer-reviewed journals and booksduring the past year.The SAHP Physical Therapy Programinitiated the MS/DPT program forstudents from China through theShanghai Sino-US Health ScienceInitiative.MMI faculty and staff conducted85 presentations at national andinternational meetings during2011-2012.The SAHP Physical Therapy Programrecruited a new faculty member toenhance the research enterprise andserve as coordinator of the ShanghaiSino-US Health Science Initiative.MMI’s Human Genetics Lab hostedthree visiting scientists from Singapore,one from Egypt and two from China forone- to three month periods during thepast year.A SAHP Clinical Perfusion graduatewas unanimously selected by theperfusion department at Saint Luke’sHospital, Kansas City, Mo., as the2011-2012 Student Perfusionist ofthe Year.MMI’s Accreditation Council forGraduate Medical Education accreditedthe Clinical Genetics FellowshipProgram and graduated two fellows inclinical genetics.UNMC ChancellorHarold M. Maurer, M.D.,presents a personalizedstethoscope to XingpengWang, M.D, president ofTongji University AffiliatedTenth Hospital, during anOctober 2011 trip.Dr. Wang also is theexecutive associate directorof the Shanghai Sino-U.S.Family Medicine Exchangeand Training Center.6MMI successfully recruited two fellowsinto its Clinical Cytogenetics FellowshipProgram for July 2012.MMI faculty taught 26 courses inphysical therapy, genetics, nursing,psychology and behavioral analysisat UNMC, the University of Nebraskaat Omaha and the University ofNebraska-Lincoln.MMI trained 170 graduate trainees,interns and postdoctoral fellows in2011-2012.MMI successfully renewedits Leadership Education inNeurodevelopmental and RelatedDisabilities grant by receiving fiveyears of funding from HRSA’s Bureauof Maternal and Child Health.MMI received notification of continuedfive-year funding for its UniversityCenter of Excellence in DevelopmentalDisabilities program.MMI, the UNMC Library and theNebraska Developmental DisabilitiesCouncil collaborated to bringthe collective papers of Dr. WolfWolfensberger, a Nebraska pioneer inthe field of developmental disabilities,to UNMC. Dr. Wolfensberger isremembered worldwide for hisdevelopment of the social valorizationtheory and for founding ENCOR, theEastern Nebraska Community Officeon Retardation and DevelopmentalDisabilities.MMI’s Speech Pathology Departmentheld its annual Alternative andAugmentative Communication (AAC)Conference on June 8, 2012. Theconference attracted attendeesfrom across the state and focusedon “Developing Language andCommunication Power Using a CoreVocabulary Classroom Approach.”MMI’s newest department,developmental neuroscience,2012developed and taught a new graduatecourse in developmental neuroscience(MMI 901).MMI’s Developmental NeuroscienceDepartment faculty submitted 22grant applications and one pendingpatent application. To date, this hasresulted in 14 grant awards: four federal,five foundation, and five universitybased awards.MMI’s Social Work Department haspartnered with UNO’s GoodrichProgram to develop a college experiencefor youth with intellectual disabilities/autism spectrum disorders. The programwill accept students in September 2012,who will live in UNO dorms and beginclasses in January 2013.Academic Affairs has developedguidelines and application forms forpeer review and awarding of facultydiversity funds, establishing two cyclesof funding for the award in the fall andspring of each year. A total of ninefaculty/staff awards were made in the2011-12 cycle.Academic Affairs/Asia Pacific RimDevelopment Program (APRDP) sent30 students and 44 faculty/leadershipto 14 different symposiums/forums onfamily medicine, research and medicaleducation held in Beijing, Shanghai,Xi’an and Tokyo.Academic Affairs/APRDP exchanged 44students with top Chinese institutions forshort-term clinical and research trainingin the areas of medicine and nursing.Academic Affairs/APRDP accepted16 new Chinese Scholarship Councilmembers, including students in DPT,MD, joint MD/PhD, PhD, and PharmDprograms and visiting scholars in familymedicine, pharmacology, pharmacypractice and physical therapy.7

2011Academic Affairs/APRDP collaboratedwith Tongji University to createShanghai Sino-US Health ScienceInitiative, an extensive partnershipinvolving translational research,family medicine training, hospitaladministration training, and jointmedical education, with support fromthe State of Nebraska.Academic Affairs/APRDP assisted withcollaborative visits such as pre-trademission visit to China, Reverse TradeMission, AAHC meeting and 100thanniversary of Shandong UniversitySchool of Medicine.Academic Affairs/Chemical SafetyOffice revised the on-line HazardousMaterials/Dangerous Goods shippingtraining modules, to reflect regulatorychanges and the recommendationsresulting from the Department ofTransportation site inspection.Academic Affairs/IRB organizedthe second annual IRB Great PlainsConsortium Conference.Academic Affairs/IRB and IACUCsenior administration continue topresent lectures and workshopsnationally and internationally.Academic Affairs/InterprofessionalEducation (IPE) received an educationaldevelopment grant from AAMC/MedEdPORTAl, which will result inpeer-reviewed publication.Academic Affairs/McGoogan Library(Library) added 166 new electronicbooks for students, increasing e-booksavailable in nursing, pharmacy, andfor medical residents by 22 percent.These resources also benefit UNMC’sdistance learners.Academic Affairs/Graduate StudiesPhD programs reached their highesttotal enrollment in fall 2011 with 369students enrolling.The Library provides quiet study spacesought by students. More than 96,000persons entered the library duringfiscal year 2012. The library’s 16 groupstudy rooms logged more than 16,000hours of student use.Academic Affairs/Graduate StudiesPhD programs set a new record for thenumber of PhD students graduatingin a year. Forty PhD students receivedtheir degrees.The Library provides students withmore than 20 mobile applications,chat and text reference service,communicating with students via theirpreferred technologies.Academic Affairs/Graduate Studiesoffice again expanded the numberof PhD students supported by theChinese Scholarship Council.The Library provided students with10,800 articles at no charge andcontinued to trim interlibrary loancosts, legally reducing copyright royaltypayments by 2,600 or 36 percent.Academic Affairs/Graduate Studiesadmitted five students into the premedical post-baccalaureate certificateprogram.Academic Affairs/Institutional ReviewBoard (IRB) initiated a new IRBeducation lecture series.82012The Library presented hands-oninformation training to more than4,104 UNMC faculty, students, staffand The Nebraska Medical Centerprofessionals. UNMC usersaccess UpToDate for patient careinformation more than 3,500 timesper week from on- and off-campus.Academic Affairs/Radiation SafetyOffice provided radiation safetytraining to more than 600 UNMCemployees.Academic Affairs/Radiation SafetyOffice participated in nuclearregulatory commission-gradedexercises with the Fort Calhounand Cooper Nuclear Stations andparticipated in a successful FEMAevaluated drill of the UNMCRadiation Health Center.The College of Dentistry (COD)incoming students tied with HarvardUniversity for the highest incomingGPA in the U.S. (3.87).The dental class of 2014 had a100 percent, first-attempt passingrate on the National Dental BoardExamination Part I.The 2012 dental class had a firstattempt 100 percent passing rate onthe National Board, Part II.The dental hygiene class of 2012 hada 100 percent passing rate on theirNational Board Examination andscored 1.5 percent above the nationalaverage.Since 1999, every COD dental hygienestudent has passed their NationalBoard Examination on the first attempt.The 2012 dental hygiene class had a100 percent first-time passing rate ontheir licensure exam.9

2011The COD Chapter of the AmericanStudent Dental Association receivedtwo national awards at the ASDAannual session.Family Medicine and the United StatesAir Force celebrate the 20th yearaffiliation of the joint UNMC-USAFResidency Training Program.Four dental students were electedto high-level leadership positions innational dental student organizations.Family Medicine’s Advanced RuralTraining Program graduated 54residents since inception in 1993; 80percent of graduates practice in ruralNebraska.Anesthesiology matriculated its firstclinical base year class as part of thenewly accredited four-year curriculum.Anesthesiology developed andintroduced a new perioperative centerfor risk assessment and managementof complex patients requiring surgicalprocedures.An anesthesiology department chairwas appointed.Cellular and Integrative Physiologyinitiated the first Team‐Based Learningin Core 4 of the medical curriculum.Emergency Medicine increased theresident class size to eight per year fora total of 24 residents in the three-yearprogram.Family Medicine hosted the RuralTraining Track Conclave – a nationalconsortium of rural residency andprogram directors and fellows.Internal Medicine Residency Programreported a 14-year continuous 100percent ABIM pass rate. 2011Pediatrics is continuing its fourth yearof Monthly Early Career Developmentmeetings to support the developmentof junior faculty.Pediatrics implemented a new serieson faculty development for all faculty.Pediatrics recruited nine new facultymembers as well as a new divisionchief in cardiology & nephrology.Pediatrics Neonatology facultycontinue development of a FetalCare Center at Children’s Hospital &Medical Center.Pediatric residency program, as wellas existing fellowships in pediatricgastroenterology and infectiousdiseases, were reaccredited through2017.Pediatric faculty graduated their firstfellows for the new genetics fellowshipprogram.their work at the annual SummerUndergraduate Research Programposter session.Psychiatry clerkship ratings rose fromsixth to second in the past two yearsamong the M3 clerkships.Radiation Oncology continued toincrease the number of industry andcooperative group clinical trials overthe past year.Pediatric faculty developed newAmerican Board of Pediatrics-approvedfellowships in pediatric cardiology andpediatric pulmonology starting in 2013.Radiology senior residents received100 percent pass rate for the AmericanBoard of Radiology certifying exams forthe seventh consecutive year.Pediatric Neonatology facultysponsored postgraduate course inneonatology.Surgery, Division of Plastic andReconstructive Surgery receiveda three-year re-certification for itsresidency program.Pharmacology and ExperimentalNeuroscience held the first faculty/graduate student retreat Aug. 13,2012, at Mahoney State Park to fosterinteraction with department faculty.Pharmacology and ExperimentalNeuroscience undergraduate and highschool students (funded by the TravisB. Lewis High School Scholar Award)joined the department for a 10-weekinternship. At the end of the program,the undergraduate students presented12UNMC plans to builda 370 million cancercenter -- one of the largestconstruction jobs everin Nebraska -- on thewest side of campus by2016. The project willinclude four facilities -- amultidisciplinary outpatientclinic, a 98-lab researchtower, a hospital towerwith 108 beds dedicatedto oncology patients, andan ambulatory care clinicdedicated to non-oncologyspecialties.Psychiatry provided clinical outreachto the following populations: BuildingBright Futures, One World Clinic,Winnebago Clinic, R-Way Clinicin Wayne, Neb., via telepsychiatry,MOSAIC (a provider of services forthose with developmental disabilities),Lasting Hope Recovery Center,Community Alliance and CharlesDrew Clinic.Psychiatry residents became involvedin the SHARING Clinic.Surgery, Division of Neurosurgeryincreased the resident complimentfrom nine to 12.Surgery, Division of General Surgeryresidency program initiated a newrural rotation at Great Plains RegionalMedical Center, North Platte, Neb.2012A Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery,faculty member was named the AltonSK Wong Distinguished Professor ofSurgery.Surgery recruited a new chief ofcardiothoracic surgery.Surgery, Division of Urologic Surgeryranked as ‘high performing’ by 2012US News & World Reports.Surgery, Division of CardiothoracicSurgery Heart Transplant Programperformed 22 heart transplants.A Surgery, Division of CardiothoracicSurgery faculty performed the firstcombined heart and liver transplant inNebraska.Neurology/Neurosurgery was namedamong the top 50 programs in the U.S.in US News and World Report.The CON admitted its first cohort of 14students to the new doctor of nursingpractice program in summer 2011.The CON received 20,000 to fund adoctoral studies and leadership PhDstudent in the Jonas Nurse LeadersScholars program and a PhD studentin the Jonas Veterans HealthcareScholars program.The CON MSN program continues torank in the top 8 percent in the country,according to the latest US News &World Report rankings.CON faculty received a new federaltraining grant from HRSA to preparefamily nurse practitioners in ruralareas with advanced clinical skillsfor emergency and inpatient care incritical access hospitals.The first cohort of CON BSN studentsgraduated from the new four-semesterconcept-based BSN curriculum inMay 2012.Student services coordinators mademore than 48 outstate recruitmentvisits and spoke with 2,021 high schooland college students, 268 parents and87 teachers/administrators/counselors.13

2011The CON’s BSN program received 639qualified applications for 391 slots, a61.2 percent acceptance rate.The CON’s Accelerated BSN programreceived 80 qualified applications for51 slots, a 63 percent acceptance rate.The CON graduated its first BSNclass of 26 students at the NorthernDivision in Norfolk in May 2012. Asecond cohort of 47 students wasadmitted in fall 2011.CON BSN students achieved asustained 95.5 percent pass rate onthe NCLEX-RN licensure examination,a rate well above the national andstate average.The CON awarded 4,121,297 ingrants and scholarships.CON students in the Omaha Divisionparticipated in two interprofessionaleducation days on the UNMC campus.CON students in the Lincoln Divisionparticipated, for the third year, in aninterprofessional education day withUNMC College of Dentistry students.CON faculty developed a BSN HonorsProgram, which will begin in 2012-13.A team of faculty members fromUNMC Northern Division andNortheast Community Collegedeveloped a collaborative leadershipsimulation for a total of 150 nursingstudents, which was later accepted foran international presentation at theSigma Theta Tau International HonorSociety 23rd Research Congress.The CON began using theNursingCAS application service tostreamline applications processing.This national system is similar tosystems for other health professionsprograms.The CON received 50,000 from theRobert Wood Johnson Foundation NewCareers in Nursing program to fundstudents in the accelerated BSN option.The CON’s Continuing NursingEducation program was awardedaccreditation with distinction in spring2012, which is the highest recognitionawarded by the American NursesCredentialing Center AccreditationProgram.The CON’s Continuing NursingEducation program sponsored 161events and awarded more than17,000 certificates of attendance toparticipants.The College of Pharmacy (COP)awarded more than 600,000 inscholarships to students in 2011-2012.The COP signed an agreement withPeru State College to initiate an RHOPprogram.The COP received a lead gift toconstruct a new College of Pharmacyand Center for Drug Discovery.14approximately 147.8 million thatincluded hits on ABC News, CNN, CBSNews, Fox News, Moscow TV and theWall Street Journal.PR placed 197 Ask UNMC series withOmaha’s ABC news affiliate worth 3.8 million in value.PR shared branding and other how-toinformation with approximately 135campus communicators.PR established an advisory board,initial marketing materials and awebsite for the inaugural NebraskaScience Festival to be held April 12-14,2013.The COP graduating class of 2011achieved a 100 percent first-time pass PR engaged consumers on Facebook.The number of fans/likes increasedrate on the national pharmacy boardlicensing examination. An averageof 105 UNMC employees attendedeach session.ARO instituted plans for Collegeof Nursing Distinguished Alumnusawardee to present the InauguralCollege of Nursing Alumni AssociationDistinguished Alumnus Lecture.HR delivered the Foundation forSuccess development program tooffice service employees (46 employeesgraduated).ARO partnered with SAHP, COMand CON to co-sponsor continuingeducation programs at reduced ratesfor alumni.High School Alliance (HSA) increasedits enrollment from 36 to 47 students.HSA added a second certified highschool teacher to accommodate theincreased class size.HSA expanded its class offerings sothat students had a wider variety ofclasses.Information Technology Services (ITS)supported UNMC’s mobile workforceby enhancing cell phone coveragewithin identified buildings.ITS launched a mobile version of theUNMC website (m.unmc.edu) whichprovides formatting specifically formobile devices.ITS enhanced UNMC’s educationaltechnology environment by upgrading230 computers in classrooms andcomputing labs.Human Resources (HR) presentedtwo Learn@Lunch Series -- A Focuson Excellence: Achieving Peak16The High School Allianceincreased its enrollmentfrom 36 to 47 students.
