Similar checks for aileron and rudder.AEFA F5J TrophyBorder restrictions are still casting a shadow over the F5J Trophy planned for early November. Also aspreviously advertised, the F5J WC selection trials that were to be held in conjunction with this event havebeen cancelled.Fear not though for the F5J Trophy will be held provided we receive sufficient entries and subject toCovid-19 restrictions. I’m aware that flyers from states outside NSW may be prevented from doing so. Iencourage those that are able to attend to get their entries in so that the event proceeds. A Practice Daywill be held on Thursday 5 November.Camping on site is free and hot showers are available. It’s a three day event commencing 1:00pm onFriday 6th Nov to allow those living close enough to travel on that day, concluding about mid-afternoonSunday 8th Nov.If we don’t receive at least 20 viable entries by 15th October 2020 the event will be cancelled. Thoseflyers that are currently prevented from attending are encouraged to enter in the hope that restrictionsare lifted by 15th October 2020. Should the event be cancelled then all entry fees will be returned.RegardsRalph DephoffPage 2

Newsletter 432 – September 2020Chief Flying InstructorGeorge Atkinson/Brendan TuckerThis is George’s last meeting as ANSW Chief Flying Instructor. Much has changed in the last 10 years, ofwhich George spent 6 as Deputy CFI and then 4 as CFI.A reminder that the deadline for instructor recertification has been extended from 30/6/20 to 30/6/21.Tim Nolan expressed a vote of thanks on behalf of ANSW and the clubs and members in NSW, to George, for his commitment to the improvement of flying and instruction standards, and the contribution that hehas made both at a state and federal level. There is no doubt that this has had a positive effect on theexcellent safety record for our sport.State Flying FieldCootamundra ClubThere have been issues with cattle damaging the boundary fence between our land and a neighbour’sand we are in the process of renewing the aged boundary fencing concerned. Contact person Hutton Oddy 0425285758 or vhoddy@gmail.com5. Standing item – any incident reports or safety issues reported during the last 2 months:a. None to report6. Working With Children Checks (WWCC) – ANSW will write to all member Club Representatives inthe near future. In brief, though, any instructor who provides instruction to anyone under 18MUST undertake a Working With Children Check. It is also important that parents/guardiansremain present whilst instruction is being provided (ie no dropping a child off for some flyinglessons whilst the parents pop to the shops). It is also strongly recommended that clubexecutives and committee members undergo a check and there is an obligation on each club tohave a suitable person nominated to manage working with children checks, including keepingrecords of those in the club who have completed the check, their WWCC number and the expirydate of their current check. For information, there is no cost involved in completing the checkfor volunteers. It involves completing an online form ly-working-children-check) which allows for apolice record check and a review of reportable workplace misconduct. The final stage is a visit toa ServiceNSW centre with the original application form and adequate proof of identity tocomplete the identity check. It is a very straightforward process.7. Ralph Dephoff raised the issue of the planned AEFA world championship selection event atCootamundra 8th November. It was suggested that, given world championship events had beenpostponed for at least a year, it would be appropriate to delay the selection event by 12 monthsand watch for developments.8. The next general meeting will be held on Friday 9 th October 2020 at 7:30pm. It is expected thatthe location will be by Zoom meeting and log-in information will be provided before themeeting.Page 13

Newsletter 432 – September 2020Club News & General InterestSafety MattersG'day to all ANSW members and to those who read ournewsletters in other parts of the planet.Last time I mentioned the danger of thunderstorms asanother summer approaches. This time it is about the approaching fire season that hasalready seen the Northern Rivers weather district hit withour first total fire ban day of the season. It caught bysurprise in lots of ways as we have had significant rainfallover the last couple of months. Just two days of hotnorwesterly winds put us into the situation. Wetunderneath, tinder dry on top.Fire is a real hazard for us in Australia and in many parts ofthe world, as we are witnessing in the USA right now. Towatch the happenings there, should be a stark reminderto us, that we are heading back into our summer fireseason and the horrors of last year.I strongly recommend that clubs have some form offirefighting equipment at the field. Remember that youshould not be expected to fight a bushfire that is headingyour way, but rather, to help suppress and even black outa fire caused by one of our models going splat and sizzle. If there are bush fires in your area, you should not even begoing to the field. Bush fires do not take prisoners. For clubs that are not aware of the CASA regulation, I willparaphrase it a little by saying that CASA actually bans theflying of electric powered models during total fire bans. The Grafton club had implemented this before we evenknew it was a CASA requirement. My club was simplyresponding to a question of 'what should we do in caseof.'.Tailor your equipment to the needs and size of your flyingfield. Grafton flies on three hundred acres of open grasscovered paddock. We have an old one tonner with a onethousand litre tank and a firefighting pump. A fire underthe right circumstance could get away very quickly and ourlandowner tells a story of what was supposed to be acontrolled hazard reduction burn that got rapidly out ofcontrol and gave them all a huge fright. 'One second it wasunder our control, the next it wasn't!' is how it wasdescribed to us.A few pointers here, no club or individual should beexpected to fight a bush fire as such. The risk is far too highfor largely untrained people to get involved.Daryl Woolfe - ANSW Safety OfficerA club should be able, however, to at least respond to afire created by one of our models if it was to come downon the property being used by the club. There are significant fines for a fire that starts on aproperty [whatever the cause other than lightning] andescapes onto other properties. Penalties also can includegaol time.I can recommend that all clubs have a list of local firebrigades and their contact details. Clubs should also havea printed sheet containing the address and directions ofhow to get to your field. This can then be read to the triplezero operator.Have an evacuation plan in place and note the risk of theaccess to your field. My home field has a single lane dirtroad for 3.6 kilometres before we can make a change ofdirection. There is only the one way in and the one wayout.1. If you detect a fire from a crashed model, call 000[triple zero] immediately.2. Dispatch your firefighting team and assess the issue.3. If safe, use your firefighting equipment to suppressany fire.4. Have people ready to advise the fire brigade whenthey arrive and direct them to the site of the fire, ifit is not obvious.5. Advise landowner and ANSW of the incident ASAP.6. If all of this fails.run like buggery!Seriously folks, do not put yourself or fellow club membersin danger by trying to be a hero.A quick note to finish. One thousand litres might sound likea lot of water. However, with a single impeller firefightingpump being capable of six hundred litres per minute openflow, you could run out of water in ninety seconds or so ifyou are not careful. For the record, my day job is that of an irrigator. I deal inwater flow day in, day out. Only I deal in 680 cubic metresof water per day.Be careful out there, as there is a lot of bush that did notburn last year.Regards and respectDaryl WoolfeANSW Safety Officer.Page 16

Newsletter 432 – September 2020"2B2" - 4 Engine EDF Jet Projectby JF Jet StudioChapter 1.Joe Frostplants is the counter rotation so the unwanted torque roll canbe eliminated by placement position of the units. The next creation from my workshop will be this four engine, two on top and two on the bottom EDF powered delta jet thatI started building a few weeks ago - this time partially silverplated for a bit of shine. The sound of multi engine models always fascinated me, afterbuilding and flying number of four engine glow and electricpowered models over the years. The large "Triptych", a 'tri'powered model is so far the pinnacle of my EDF fleet but willsoon be accompanied by the "quadrasonic" sound of this4 x 12 bladed 50mm counter rotating power unit project. In its embryonic stageDue to the current shortage and availability of model parts Istarted on the frame well before the power units arrived, expecting the OS delivery to take much longer. Surprisingly atdouble the normal airfreight cost the parcel arrived less thantwo weeks after I placed the order.First Depron cutBefore arrival of the EDFs, I made a couple of identical sizedmock ups to give me an ideas for their mounting and I alsomade up the thrust tubes using some old X-ray films showingparts of my body internals (LOL). I also started fishing aroundin all sorts of shops for bits and pieces to create someBeing slightly conservative I started on the air frame sizesome 20% smaller than an original plan, as I decided not tofully rely on performance data sheets of the power unitswhich I normally find slightly somewhat “farfetched”. I’drather be well overpowered than the other way. Deciding ona lower voltage with mid Kv range, each power unit is ratedat some 750 grams thrust on 3S LiPos (if one believes thepromotional data sheet figures). Expected AUW at 2.5-3kilograms should be close to one to one power ratio which isnormally my target with any EDF powered model. While having numerous options to wire the power set up,such as each unit to run on separate battery, or 2 twinsrunning as pairs on 2 packs, or all four to run of one largecapacity pack there's further testing required to check thebest figure outputs. The great thing with these small powerPage 17Depron frame laminations

Newsletter 432 – September 2020practical reasons. While trying to keep the battery to ESCpower leads to minimum length, the battery placement waschecked before to establish the guessed CofG position. At thisCurrent draw testsTaking shapestage I have set all power units at "0" neutral angle to themain frame so it will be interesting to see how it will affectthe flight performance following initial test trials, where theCofG will play a big part, subject to trial & error during testruns along the smooth hard packed beach, rather than off thegrass strip as I'm using rather small 38mm wheels fitted toscratch built fixed landing gear.aesthetic looking engine nacelles. Luckily, after trying dozensof all sorts of plastic and foam cups I obtained a few saltshakers that were just the perfect size to do the job, complimenting some 3D printed bell intake creations.Modified power plants ready for installThe first thing to do after fitting the pods was the hook up,giving it a first combined run to check the static thrust, and tohear the sweet sound.Power unit modificationsThe rear pair of the units (2&3) are mounted on made up railswith the side brackets bonded to the EDF shrouds so both canbe easily removed and adjusted for the efflux thrust line. Thewing pod units however had to be fixed permanently forPage 18Stay tuned for the next report and more pictures inChapter 2.Happy and safe flying, Joseph Frost
