1IntroductionSince introducing the wide inner ring bearingdesign in the early 1900’s, Fafnir has been aleading name in ball bearings . Today, the Timken Fafnir brands can be found on a wide array of ballbearings . Each design is developed with the sameidea in mind – to maximize performance .The original Fafnir wide inner ring ball bearingdesign was provided to users who needed ballbearings which could be mounted easily on straightshafts and positioned without shoulders, locknutsor adapters . Later, this same design was used infarm equipment applications, allowing Fafnir toestablish itself as a major supplier of ball bearingsand ball bearing units in this industry .Through the years, Fafnir has introduced manybearing innovations to improve performance andgive longer life . Some of these advances include: a complete line of prelubricated andrelubricatable bearings flangette pressed steel housing units forlight-duty, moderate-speed applications tri-ply seals for effective protection againstloss of lubricant and entrance of contaminants ductile iron units for compact, highstrength versatility shroud seals for positive sealing againstabrasives and fiber wrap molded nylon retainer for extra strength,and better bearing performance undermisalignment a Thin Dense Chrome (TDC ) plate whicheliminates the concern of chemical attack onbearing steel gothic race bearings which provide superiorstiffness for the toughest of tillage applicationsThe performance advantages of these designshave led to their quick adoption by farm implementmanufacturers . 2Design and ManufacturingFrom the original design through the many manufacturingprocesses, every Timken Fafnir bearing is produced to strictstandards of high quality . The precision built into these bearingsguarantees maximum performance in load carrying ability andrunning accuracies . Fafnir bearings are precision-grade, meetingABMA, ABEC-1 specifications, and are not to be confused withhardware grade or semi-precision bearings of the pressed metal ormachined-only variety .DESIGNTimken Fafnir’s agricultural line of bearings are designed specificallyfor farm equipment applications . These designs have been adaptedto suit the particular needs of farm machinery where conditionsemphasize the need for better bearing seals and economical,easily-mounted housings that provide for alignment .Fafnir bearings incorporate balanced design between the ballcomplements and race sections to give maximum capacity withoutsacrifice in ring sections . Other factors such as race depth, raceconformity to the ball, internal clearance, etc ., are tailored formaximum performance in agricultural applications .Working closely with farm equipment manufacturers, Fafnirbearings are tested and proven on both the farm and in dust andmud simulated test conditions .The Buna-N material selected for the Fafnir seals combine excellentchemical resistance with an effective barrier against the entranceof contamination and loss of lubricant . Carefullyprocessed bearing quality chromium-alloy, high carbon steels andother specialized steels are used in the manufacturing process .Though specific applications may require carburized steels,the large majority of bearings are through-hardened steel . Thiscombination of high quality bearing steel and heat treatmentresults in optimum bearing performance .MANUFACTURINGDesign and bearing specifications are built into every bearingduring the manufacturing process .
